Miracle ~ Exo's Kai ~
Genre: Angst, but lots of fluff (getting into the Christmas spirit)
Warnings: miscarriages and the pain that comes with that awful event
It had been a rough year for you and your husband after the constant let downs and failures that seemed to always circle back after a moment of joy. Life wasn't treating you well physically and emotionally throughout the past year and a half. It wasn't treating your husband well mentally or emotionally either.
For as long as you could remember, you had wanted to be a mom. The best mother you could be to the happiest child you could create. Ever since you had gotten married, you wanted to have kids and be a stay at home mom. But unfortunately, fate was cruel to you and you were ripped of the beautiful gift that created such wonderful bundles of joy. No matter how hard you tried, there was always red, always pain, always cramps and always an unspoken tear.
"I'm right here." your husband, Kai, whispered in your ear as you stared at the overturned pregnancy test laying on his bed side table. You had gone through so many negative tests alone that you had begged Kai to stay with you after the sixth test.
At the moment, the bedroom was dark and you sat partially in Kai's lap with your legs wrapped around his waist and your left arm resting on his right shoulder. Kai had his right arm wrapped around your waist as he held you flush against his body in hopes of comforting your trembling state. This was just as hard for him as it was for you, but he need to be the one to hold you in times of turmoil and that's why he kept calm, whispering words of comfort. In the corner of the room, sat a Christmas tree all lit up and shining to match Kai's hope and faith. It had been his idea to place a tree in your room so he could wake up every morning and be reminded of the joy that is Christmas.
"It's been five minutes." you spoke, turning off the timer on your phone. Now your free hand was clutching at his sweater as you looked away from the pregnancy test. The fear of what you expected it to be was gripping at your heart in a terrifying fashion.
Kai reached over and picked up the test to see what the results were. All hope came crashing down as his eyes landed on the single line inside the test. Negative. Kai suddenly grew frustrated with himself. Was he the reason you couldn't have a child? There was a possibility of it having to do with your body, but he could never ever hold that against you in any sort of way. He loved you too much.
His silence was all you needed to know as you softly began to cry out the pain clutching your chest. Kai set the test on the table once again and shifted you completely into his lap before he fell back into the pillows embellishing the bed with his eyes squeezed shut and his hold on you tighter than ever.
"I'm sorry." Kai breathed out into your hair as you cried continuously into his neck and shoulder.
A few weeks later, on Christmas Eve, you started to feel awful. The symptoms had lasted for the last few days which made you think that you had caught a stomach virus just before Christmas. This didn't thrill you at all because that meant you could potentially miss out on the activities. You had been throwing up all day the first day and then in the early mornings up to lunch the other days. It was bringing down your mood.
The sound of the commode flushing filled your ears as you leaned back from throwing up. Breathing in some air, you opened your eyes and looked around the bathroom. A bright pink box caught your eye from the top shelf above the toilet. Maybe...I should try. You thought to yourself as you got up to grab the box.
A few minutes later, you were sitting on the bathtub with your head in your hands as you waited for the test to process. The time went by like a snail crossing a side walk on a drizzling day with rain in the forecast for the rest of the week. Half of you wanted to say that this was pointless and that you were going to disappoint yourself again and that you would just cry all over again. But the other half was curious. Eventually, the timer went off and you grabbed the test. One, two. One, two. Two? Wait.
"Wait— two?!" you nearly screamed, shoving the plastic stick closer to your eyes. Without another look at the test you burst into tears from pure shock and overwhelming happiness. To make sure, you took another one that also read positive. Now you didn't care about feeling sick and everything that might bring you down, because you were pregnant and you were going to do everything in your power to take care of this child.
"Wait I have to tell Kai!" you exclaimed at the realization. Initially, you wanted to change into some clothes other than sweats and a sweater before you went to go see him, but you couldn't wait any longer. However, you halted at the thought of this being one of his Christmas presents. "Wait, I should get an appointment with the doctor to confirm this and get the test results from them."
It didn't take you long to get an appointment with your doctor and confirm the test. The doctor actually cried herself after hearing the news because she knew you and Kai had been through so much. She made sure to get the perfect page for you to wrap for Kai in the morning. It was incredibly lucky that you had gotten an appointment on Christmas Eve, but your doctor was an old friend who didn't mind helping at times like these. That was a blessing in disguise.
"Congratulations, really." she squeezed you tightly into her embrace and bid you a Merry Christmas as she walked you to the front desk.
When you got home, you made sure Kai hadn't gotten home early. A sigh left your lungs as you discovered no sign of him being home. Panic set in when you knew he would arrive home soon. You grabbed the wrapping paper from the laundry room and sealed the results in an envelope before wrapping the envelope and placing a bow on the left corner with his name right next to it.
Now you had to find some way to distract yourself from the happiness bubbling inside you so Kai wouldn't get suspicious about your attitude. Since it was close to dinner time, you called Kai and asked him if he wanted to you to make something or if he wanted to pick up takeout on his way home. The both of you decided you would make something together since it was Christmas Eve.
"Baby I'm home!" Kai called out from front door as he stomped his feet to rid his shoes of the snow attached to the bottoms. He took his shoes off in the mud room and stepped into the house. His face lit up at the sight of the tree next to the gas fire that wasn't doing justice to warming the house. Kai stopped by the thermostat and bumped up the heat to warm himself up.
"Are you ready?" you called from the kitchen where you were preparing the ingredients to make dinner. Kai walked into the kitchen while taking off his hoodie and tossing it on the table before he looked over at the sink where you stood washing some of the vegetables. The next thing you felt was his strong arms wrapping around your waist and pulling your back flush into his chest. His head laid on your shoulder as he hugged you tightly.
"Absolutely."
The night passed by with soft laughing and pure smiles filled with joy. Kai loved these moments with you and he was so excited about his day off tomorrow where he could spend the rest of the day, cuddled up to you and not having to worry about anything. Little did Kai know that it was growing incredibly hard for you not to blurt out the exciting news to him. Everything in your body was telling you to let him just open the envelope right then and there, but you wanted to surprise him and that's what held you back.
"Can we go to bed already?" Kai whined from the bed as he watched you braid your hair in the bathroom mirror. He was admiring you from afar, but he was exhausted and just wanted to cuddle you all night long.
"Yes." you replied, finishing off the tie and making your way back to the bed where Kai laid with his arms wide open and a pout resting on his lips.
"Hurry!" he whined again, practically desperate for cuddles. Gladly, you crawled under the comforter and scooted over into his side where he immediately held you close. It took a few minutes to get settled, but Kai allowed you to adjust and before you knew it, you were falling asleep from exhaustion. Kai realized then that even if you couldn't have a child, having you by his side was enough to make him happy for a long time. "Good night Sweetheart."
The next morning, you were gently pulled from your rim cycle and woken up to the early morning sun peeking through the curtains. Kai had removed his shirt during the night because he kept breaking out into a hot sweat. Your face was tucked into his neck as you hugged his side with your right leg resting on his soft abs. His right arm was wrapped under you and resting gently in the middle of your back while his soft breathes tickled your hairline as his lips rested near your forehead. Carefully, you raised yourself slightly and gently rubbed your thumb over Kai's cheek as you stared at the man you were so deeply in love with.
"You're staring again," Kai mumbled, practically still asleep, but definitely aware. His right eye peeked open and a chuckle with a smile followed after, making you light up inside. Moments like these were your favorite. Crazy morning hair, hazy voices, and half open eyes. "Are you feeling okay this morning?"
"I'm doing better." you nodded, telling him the truth but not telling him why you were feeling better. Now that you knew you were pregnant, you didn't feel as sick as you thought you did before. Just before you were about to suggest it, Kai asked you if you wanted to go and eat breakfast before opening presents.
After some fresh pancakes smothered in warm butter and the preferred topping, paired with some hot chocolate, you and Kai sat down on the living room floor and pulled the wrapped presents underneath the tree. Initially, you had both decided to get each other two things each, but your surprise had come in late and there was no way you weren't going to tell him about the baby.
"Oh it's beautiful." you softly spoke as you opened the red velvet necklace box to reveal a white diamond on a silver chain. Kai leaned over and kissed your cheek as a 'you're welcome' gesture. Eventually, you ended up between his legs as he hooked the jewel around your neck and watched it sparkle on your collarbones. For a brief moment, you laid in his arms after you had finished unwrapping your presents. It was blissful and wonderful to be in his arms for the time being. It was one more thing that Christmas brought to your little family that you cherished so much.
"Oh," you spoke, leaning forward and moving around the tree to grab the wrapped envelope. When you turned back around, Kai raised his eyebrows in surprise and then they fell to match the pout his mouth held.
"I thought our deal was two?"
"This one came late," you smiled, handing the gift over to him. Kai sighed at your broken deal and began to open it with some appreciation. "Plus, it's for both of us."
Kai eyed you for a second and opened the envelope, sliding the piece of paper out from its place and unfolding it to read the words. His eyes scanned the paragraphs before halting on a specific word. His eyes flew up to look at you and then back down at the paper where he continued to read it over and over again. The sound of your gentle laugh filled his ears making him look back up at you.
"Are you pregnant?" Kai questioned with a bewildered look on his face. "Y/n, are you pregnant?!"
"Yes!" you cheered, feeling the tears of joy run down your cheeks once again. You couldn't help crying after seeing Kai's eyes tear up with the brightest smile you haven't seen since your wedding day lighting up his face.
"Come here!" his voice cracked slightly as he pulled you into his bone crushing embrace and kissed every single part of your skin he could reach. "When did you find out?"
"Yesterday. I went to the doctor just to make sure and they confirmed that I'm pregnant!"
"This is the best Christmas present I have ever been given!" Kai exclaimed.
Tears slipped from his eyes and that's when you broke down. Both of you had wanted this for so long and you were only met with trial and error. It truely had taken a hold of you in a way only six negative signs could. This was a big moment for the both of you and Kai was completely overwhelmed. He had good feelings about this pregnancy and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure he took good care of you during the next nine months.
"I can't believe it." you cried out, holding onto him tightly as you continued to sob. Kai pulled you back and wiped your tears away. "I really can't."
Kai smiled and shifted your hair behind your ear. "It's our little miracle."
