He held his head like a hero. He stood by your side, holding your hands, with his shaky hand. Remember this moment. Remember us.
The crowds went wild as you stood in the balcony of the castle. They read off your names, sang beautiful melodies, spreading legends that already told about you. We’ll never be the same.
The kingdom lights shined just for him and you, the kingdom was filled with your magic, moved to tears with your love. Long live the King and Queen.
-----------------------------------------------
Of all the years that we stood there, there wasn’t one where you wished this moment to happen. You waited for it, you dreamed for it, for the day he would wear a crown and call you his Queen. It was your destiny, fate was already decided before you were even born, but this didn’t bother you because he was the one you were in love with. We will be remembered.
You always heard the tales the people told, talking about beautiful princesses marrying handsome princes. You heard how those princes promised the world to them, how they lived happily ever after. It all seemed unreal, you never thought you two would have a story of Kings and Queens. So you lived half of your life, dreaming and fantasising of something that probably wouldn’t be, you knew the other side of reality. You lived hiding your love for Chanyeol, the one you were going to marry. You didn’t know back then, that he loved you the same, that his heart beat every time he heard the people saying your name and his. His love was the kind that moves mountains and gives you galaxies as a gift.
-----------------------------------------------
That night you danced like you knew how your life would be, the music was loud, the voices never shut up, the stares never ended, but in your little world it was only you and him. You never stopped looking into his eyes, he never stopped smiling and promising to rule the world by your side. That night, under the light of a million stars, he gave you his heart and you gave him yours.
It’s the start of an age, we got to rule the world.
“Are you afraid Chan? Isn’t it scary, knowing the whole world depends now on you?” You asked as you two watched the beautiful fireworks.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of Y/N, not as long as you stand by my side my love”.
Holding your face with his both hands, his soft lips kissed yours. Electrical feels ran through your whole body making your legs numb, you got goosebumps all over your skin, feeling cold in the outside but burning in the inside as your heart beat faster than ever.
“We’ll fight dragons together” Chanyeol said as he gave you a forehead kiss. “And when we come back from our adventures” His hands slowly glided down your sides, grabbing your waist and lifting you up a little. “And greet us like this, with songs and confetti all around town”. Spinning you around, he smiled when your sweet laugh reached his ears, seeing how happy you were with him.
“Promise me Chan, that you’ll stand by me forever” Images came into your mind, images of memories that were still in wait to be made. You and him, your children and grandchildren. Crowds loving you even more than they did that night, stories and legends about the great King and Queen that rule the kingdom. Memories of you and him, loving each other forever, because your love is immortal.
“One day, my love, we will be remembered, as the Queen and King that ruled hearts, as the King that loves his Queen more than his own heart, as the Queen that made the sun shine every morning”. Chanyeol, the king, with his heavy crown, royal coat and his sword at his side, knelt down, holding your hand and kissing your palm. “I promise you my Queen, that it will be always you and me. I love you Y/N”.

Summary: When a strange string of not so great events somehow and you with a job at the palace punching the wrong people can be not so great.
The music from the orchestra floated in the background as pairs spun and twirled in elaborate patterns. The beginning of your night was flooded with people of royal status bombarding you with well wishes, invitations, and promises of gifts. It was overwhelming but you managed to handle it and it distracted you from the new couple across the dance floor; now, things had finally calmed down a bit and Minseok returned to your side with a glass of amber liquid in hand which you gratefully took.
“It won’t be long now,” he said with a smirk.
“Won’t be long till what?”
“Well now that everyone has seen how young, gorgeous, and extremely single the new lady of the most powerful territory on the continent is…. Proposals are bound to come flooding in!”
You grimaced and punched him on the shoulder, “Don’t even joke about that!” He just winked and chuckled from beside you when suddenly you were being lifted up and twirled in the air. You let out a gasp of surprise when you were finally back on the ground and standing in front of Chanyeol who enveloped you in a bear hug. Yixing, Jongdae, and Baekhyun took up places beside MInseok as you squirmed from Chanyeol’s embrace.
“It’s nice to see you too Chanyeol but please let me go,” you wheezed as you finally broke from his grasp.
“Our little Y/n is so grown up and powerful now!” he exclaimed with a pout.
Beakhyun chimed in with a smirk, “We haven’t seen you in ages and now you come back in charge of Iyle? Shouldn’t you have mentioned it to us at least once?”
“I’m sorry, so much has happened over the past while and I didn’t even know myself until a few weeks ago.”
“You have to tell us everything Y/n!” Jongdae whined, joining in with Baekhyun and Chanyeol’s fake pouts.
“Watch what you say boy,” Yixing butted in with a smile and an arm over your shoulder, “It’s Lady Y/n now.”
Rolling your eyes you brushed him off with a smile, “It’s fine…”
“In all honesty Y/n, you look like a different person and not in a bad way,” he said with a comforting smile that only Yixing could create, “You seem so much more confident and it’s good to see.”
The other princes nodded along with him and you thanked them, you did feel different than the last time you saw them but you were glad they were back with you now, even if it was only for a few days. You continued to listen to them chatter away amongst themselves, making jokes just the same as they used too when a flash of pink tackled you in a hug.
“OH Y/N I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!” Jiyoon wailed, eyes watering as she clung onto you.
“JIYOON!” You exclaimed wrapping your arms back around her as you both sobbed into the other’s shoulder. It had been so long since you’d seen her and immediately you started crying crocodile tears, staining both your dress and her. After a few seconds the latched onto your wrist and stood up again.
“We need to talk,” was all she said before dragging you away and towards one of the patio doors that was open and letting the warm night air flow through the great hall. All you could do was follow as you waved to the group of princes who stood there looking stunned. You followed her as she weaved around the patio until she found a secluded bench overlooking the spring garden where she sat you down.
“Y/n,” she sobbed again, “I missed you so much! You leave with Sehun and now you come back as the Lady of Iyle and you’re avoiding each other like the plague? I wrote you letters but Sehun just sent them back unopened, I thought you were dead!”
“I’m sorry,” you said lamely.
“What happened? You need to tell me everything.”
“He asked me to marry him… and I said no.”
“Oh Y/n,” she sighed taking your hand in hers, “I thought something like that might have happened, he’s always been so spontaneous, even since we were kids. But Y/n,” she paused, “Why did you say no?”
“Because I was afraid,” you whispered with tears in your eyes. You had never been able to tell anyone before but with Jiyoon it all just seemed to spill out of you like a waterfall.
“It’s okay,” she whispered, petting your hair calmly, “No wonder he was with that bitch Haerin. I hate to tell you this but even though we didn’t know, everyone started taking sides.”
“What?”
“You notice how only a few of the princes came to greet you right? Unconsciously, we’ve already started taking sides, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Yixing, Jongdae, Minseok, and I are all on your side. Junmyeon, Jongin, and Kyungsoo are all siding with Sehun as well as most of their siblings.”
“I didn’t mean to create a rift between everyone.”
“Don’t worry about it,” she assured you, “Now tell me about this whole Lady of Iyle thing that happened.”
So you did, you explained everything about your father and mother, and how Lord Cha was the one that found you, and everything to do with the dead queen. She looked at you like you were insane but you knew she believed you.
“Oh Y/n…” she sighed, “I never thought…”
“It's okay,” you managed to say with a smile, taking her hand and giving it a squeeze this time.
“If it makes you feel any better, everyone on the continent knows your name, even though you’ve been ruling for such a short time your people love you!” You gave her a weak smile and the both of you sat in silence for a while.
“WIll you do me a favour and explain it to the others? I don’t think I have enough energy to explain it to everyone individually…”
“No problem! I’ll even tell Junmyeon and he’ll spread it to the rest of the boys.”
“Thank you so much,” You told her sincerely as you wiped a few stray tears from your eyes, “It feels really good to tell my best friend about all of this.”
“Anytime,” she told you with a smile, “now lets head back inside before people start to miss us, I swear when Chanyeol’s sister Princess Sejung gets bored all hell breaks loose!”
You laughed along with her as you wandered back through the wide patio doors and into the sea of people. Jiyoon was immediately swept away by the crowd leaving you alone in your search for the Princes, out of the corner of your eye you spotted Baekhyun chatting with some blushing ladies but before you could reach him you were spun around to face a smirking man with dark eyes and hair the colour of clouds.
“Nice to meet you Lady Y/n,” he purred, “I’ve heard a lot about you. My name is Taek, I’m the Governor’s son.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” You croaked out as he kissed your hand with a smirk.
“The pleasure is all mine, care for a dance?”
Before you had a chance to answer his hand was around your waist and you were one of the twirling couples on the dance floor. Though he didn’t look it, he was almost as graceful of a dancer as Jongin, he navigated through the swarm of bodies like he had been doing it all his life. And he probably had been, seeing as he was the son of the Governor.
“It’s not everyday you get to dance with the most beautiful and eligible lady at the ball,” he said with a shiny smile.
“I’m flattered,” you said skeptically. He wasn’t bad looking but his motives didn’t exactly seem chivalrous.
“When it was announced that the heir of Iyle had returned everybody thought it’d be some shrivelled old man, but when you entered, boy was everyone surprised.”
“I’m afraid I don't know if that was supposed to be a compliment or an insult,” you said with a frown as he twirled you around again.
“I meant surprised in the best way a man could, Lady Y/n. I assure you it was meant to be nothing other than a compliment,” he told you with a friendly chuckle, eyes glinting.
“I apologize, I am not quite used to the ways of court life yet.”
“I could hardly tell, you’re easily one of the most poised ladies here this evening and I see you are already close with the young royals?” He asked before lifting you up and shouting along with the others.
“You could say that…”
“As long as I’ve known them they’ve always been a tight knit group but now they’re taking over their parents rule and getting married like our King of Oclaria. Not much time for childish things when you’re the ruler of the country.”
With a small smile you nodded in agreement, “You’re quite right.”
“On the topic of marriage, I’d like to propose a deal,”
You looked at him quizzically, you had no interest in marrying this man you had just met but you were curious enough to gesture for him to continue.
“You see the girl the King is spending all his time with was my fiance but our engagement was cancelled once the King started taking interest in her,” he explained, “Now I am left without a wife and my father won’t let me take over the family business until I get married. Now seeing as we’re easily the two most powerful single people in this room aside from the King I think we should get married.”
You frowned, “I’m sorry but I fail to see how getting married to you would benefit me.”
Flashing you a smile that would make most girls swoon he swept you up again, “Well if we get married there really would be no downside. With both of our assets combined we would be filthy rich and have enough power to take over the country if we wanted. Aside from having a few sons you would have to do nothing but live a life of luxury after our marriage.”
“I’m sorry but I’ll have to turn down your proposal at this current point in time,” you told him with as straight a face as possible, “I’m really not interested in marrying right now.”
“Just think about it Lady Y/n,” he lamented, “together we could be the most powerful people on the continent!”
You huffed as the music came to a close and you stopped moving, he held you hand keeping you on the dance floor as those who wanted to leave cleared the floor and the orchestra began playing again. Just as you were about to answer him your hand was taken by somebody else, smoothly knocking his grasp from yours.
“Mind if I cut in?” Sehun asked, holding his arm tightly around you. It wasn’t exactly a question since he was the king but he still carried you off into the crowd of dancers before Lord Taek could answer.
“It’s quite a coincidence that you’ve managed to find yourself back in court isn’t it Lady Y/n?” he hissed in your ear, “When you left I thought I’d never see you again but now you return the most powerful Lady in the country. Aside from my future wife of course.”
“It is quite a coincidence isn't it,” You agreed with him keeping your voice as steady and emotionless as possible, “I’m not sure if I believe it myself yet either, it’s a lot of responsibility.”
He scoffed, “Well, we both know there were a lot of responsibilities you couldn’t handle either.”
You grimaced as he prepared to lift you over his head with a flourish. The lift and jumps were never your favourite part of dancing as you didn’t have the advantage of being much smaller than your partner like many of the other girls. It always felt awkward and this time was no different as you weren’t sure whether he would drop you or not.
“Now, it doesn’t seem like you have much choice about marriage,” he pointed out, “And it seems the governors son is already foaming at the mouth with the idea of marrying you?”
“You saw that?”
“Everyone did, he wasn’t exactly subtle with his proposal a few minutes ago.”
“Oh….” you sighed cheeks going warmer. The music slowed and people began to clap as the dance was finished. Partners were breaking apart and drifting back into the crowd but his hands only tightened around your waist as you tried to draw away from him. His rough fingertips dug into the bottom of your exposed back and you felt his breath against your neck as he leaned in to whisper in your ear.
“Lord Taek is a greedy bastard, maybe he deserves someone like you.” he spat at you before disappearing back into the crowd.
You stood there stunned for a few minutes until someone came up and grabbed your hand pulling you back into a swarm of people where you were quickly surrounded by the princes demanding for you to tell them what was going on. Quickly, you brushed them off and headed back to your room saying you felt ill and needed to rest.
-----
The clatter of people returning from the gala to their rooms had died down a long time ago but you were still wide awake. The clock on the wall chimed telling you it was three in the morning, the curtain danced in the warm summer air drifting in through the open balcony windows. Feeling restless you slipped a loose dress on over your nightgown and made your way through the silent palace corridors and into the gardens. Slowly and silently you made your way through the first five gardens, the sound of your slippers brushing against the plush grass, the hush of the wind dancing through the night, the soft trickle of the fountains, the chirping of crickets were the sounds that filled your ears in the silence. And cautiously you made your way from the garden of day into the garden of night.
It took your breath away, unlike the other gardens which glowed during the daylight hours but were otherwise dimmed by the absence of sunlight. The night garden glowed on it’s own. Purple wisteria spilled from every crack and crevice, hundreds of lights twinkling softly like stars hung from the domed glass roof giving off an otherworldly glow. You followed the twisting path in the tunnel of little purple flowers until finally it gave way to a large pond filled with little silver fish that seemed to glow in the moonlight. Continuing to follow the path around the side of the lake you came to a small structure sheltering an intricately carved marble bench. Sitting on the cool surface you took notice of the round white flowers that began to blossom in the moonlight; tentatively, you reached out a fingertip to brush against the soft petals.
“We call them moonflowers,” Sehun said, emerging from behind one of the pillars. Gone were his royal robes which he was wearing for the gala and now he was wearing something more similar to what he used to wear back in Arye. There was a certain charm that came with his messy hair and half buttoned shirt which had butterflies swarming in your stomach. It seemed so long ago that you were back in the palace of Arye, innocent and in love. Unaware of everything the world had in store for you.
“They’re beautiful,” you told him, returning your hand to rest in your lap.
“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, you nodded, “Too busy worrying about who to invite to your wedding with Lord Taek?”
“I declined his proposal.”
“He doesn’t take no for an answer.”
“Well it’s the only answer he’s going to get!” You exclaimed jumping up.
You both stopped and stood in silence for a moment.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me,” you told him before dipping back into a lull of silence, “This place is really beautiful.”
“It’s always been for you, this garden. When you had nightmares I meant for you to come out here and have it be like your safe haven. Nobody except for the gardener is allowed in here still, and you of course.” He explained.
Smiling, you told him softly, “Thank you.”
“Don’t spend too much time out here,” he warned you, “There’s an early start tomorrow.”
“Goodnight,” you called after him as he disappeared down the path, leaving you alone with your thoughts again.
-----
With careful steps you climbed into the carriage, footmen closing the door tightly behind you. The line of carriages stretched through the whole driveway of the palace as the various guests loaded in. Jiyoon had offered to come with you so you wouldn’t be alone but you declined, the ride up the mountainside would give you time to relax from the night before. The second day of festivities would be a picnic on the mountaintop behind the palace, it was clear as the sun was shining down upon the palace that it would be a beautiful day full of fun. Peeking out the window of your carriage as you waited to set off you noticed you were dressed quite differently than many of the other ladies climbing into their own carriages. Many of them wore high necked, floor length dresses with varying sleeve lengths. They were made of lightly patterned cotton and lace in many layers to help the wearer remain cool in the warm sunlight. On the other hand you had opted for something a little more reminiscent of what people in Iyle wore in the south where it was much, much warmer. Your sleeves were short and puffed, ending about halfway down your upper arm, like your dress from last night the neckline was wide and trimmed with lace while the back was low. With only one cotton layer dyed a soft periwinkle and spotted with many small blossoms the skirt ended midway down your calves giving you an ease of movement something longer wouldn’t allow. Opting to leave the parasol behind you donned a wide brimmed straw sun hat decorated with a ribbon matching the colour of the blossoms leaving your hair loose.
After a few minutes it seemed everybody was ready in their carriages and you set off with a lurch, rolling down the pebble drive and out the gates, up the mountain road. The view of the seaside cliffs from out your window caused you to reminisce about your trip down the coast for the first time you visited Iyle with the diving gulls and crashing waves, bordered by the swaying grasses and wildflowers. Drifting through daydreams it felt like hardly a moment had passed before you were climbing out and onto the plush grass. Blankets were already strewn about the meadow, each with a wicker basket placed in the center waiting for people to join them for lunch. One step at a time you made your way towards the open meadow until a flying ball of pink attached herself to your side with a giggle.
“Isn’t this amazing Y/n?” Jiyoon exclaimed as who you were guessing the two other princesses made their way over to your side, “This is Princess Sejung of Meadazia and Princess Hyejin of Qeca, I’m sure you haven’t forgotten them.”
“How could I?” you said with a smile, offering them both a small curtsy which only Hyejin returned. Jiyoon was the same as always, full of energy as she dragged the lot of you away in order to find the best picnic spot. After a morning of playing about in the meadows the four of you settled down for lunch, weaving flowers into each other’s hats and hair. Other guests came by to chat time after time but none stayed long, moving onto the next blanket to continue their greetings.
After lunch was finished you and Jiyoon left the two sun fatigued princesses chatting with a group of young lords and ladies as you headed off to find the croquet set Sehun had mentioned to Jiyoon last night. Once the two of you found it you played round after round until finally you were released by a tap on the shoulder.
“Would you mind going for a stroll with me Lady Y/n?” Lord Taek asked with a sparkling smile.
You glanced over at Jiyoon who had quickly stopped paying attention to the game and started paying attention to the two of you. You turned back to him uncertain of what to say, “Well…”
“She’d love to go! It’s such a lovely afternoon isn’t it?” Jiyoon cut you off, grabbing the croquet mallet from your hands and shoving you towards him.
You stumbled and he caught your hand with a grin, “Thank you Princess, I’ll make sure to return her in one piece,” he told her.
“Don’t worry, you two go have fun!”
You shot her one last pleading look before you were dragged off behind Taek and down the hillside. Surprisingly he didn’t bring up the proposal again, the two of you spent most of the time talking and getting to know each other, the two of you were nowhere near close friends by the time dinner was called but you could say he would be a decent young man if he wasn’t so set on marriage.
Unlike lunch earlier dinner was a celebration meant to give thanks for the previous year’s good fortune with food, friends, family, and as you quickly found out, lots and lots of drinking. You were only a few glasses of champagne in, when like the devil she was, Jiyoon made you drop your glass and join her in dancing around the bonfire.
“Hurry up Y/n!” she squealed as she kicked off her shoes, grabbed a handful of her long skirt and began spinning in circles to the hypnotizing beat of the drums. Feeling light from the bubbling beverage you followed suit, knocking off your hat and shoes, throwing your hands into the air with a shout of delight. The drum beats matched the pounding of your heart as you leaped around the growing fire, others equally as tipsy, if not more, quickly joined in with your pounding feet. The air filled with laughter, shouts, and music as you travelled around the circle linking arms and spinning with whoever wished to dance with you. You were in a trance, the sparkling champagne infecting you, the drum beats carrying your feet for hours as the moon rose higher into the sky. Before you realized a cool breeze hit your cheeks and you felt yourself being pulled away from the large bonfire and towards a farther side of the meadow. The fresh evening breeze sobered you and you made out Lord Taek’s glinting smile from in front of you.
“I never would have expected you to be one for dancing,” he said stopping and spinning you in front of him. He leaned close and laughed, “or drinking.”
“And I never expected you to be the one waiting on the sidelines,” you hiccuped, you could feel the heat rising to your cheeks, were you really so drunk he could tell just from looking at you? You certainly didn’t feel drunk but maybe your vision was blurring at the corners just a little.
He scoffed, “Believe me, nobody loves to drink more than me. Unfortunately my mother has prohibited me from touching any and all alcohol today after what happened last year.”
“What happened last year?”
“It’s too late in the evening to get into it now,” he told you with a laugh, “Let’s just say I ended up with a few scars, but not nearly as many as you Lady Y/n,” he said grasping your arm and bringing it closer to his face so he could inspect it. You could feel the ill intention in his grasp as the silver stars twinkled in the moonlight. “Tell me dearest,” he whistled, “Where did you get these scars?”
The world snapped back into focus, suddenly it felt like and were crawling along every inch of your body, tiny pinpricks against every limb. You tore your arms from his grasp, hiding in protectively behind your back, “That’s none of your concern,” you sputtered out before stumbling back to the bonfire as fast as your jelly legs could carry you. The pounding of the drums once again drowned out your thoughts as you grabbed another glass of wine, and another, and then another before being pulled into the circle of dancing once again.
Slowly but surely the crowd trickled away, climbing into their carriages in a drunken stupor and being carted back to the palace. Eventually there were only only a few people left, Jiyoon and the other princesses have disappeared already along with the other princes whom you hadn’t seen much of during the day. Vision spinning you climbed into your carriage collapsing onto the plush seat as the driver shut the door behind you. The carriage dipped as you felt the driver climbing to his seat, you closed your eyes and rested your head against the side of the carriage but the telltale poll of the carriage didn’t come.
“Take us to the back entrance and if you tell anyone about this I’ll have you exiled!” The man outside the carriage ordered.
“Yes sir,” the driver replied as Sehun climbed into the carriage beside you and the horses began trotting away.
“Sehun…” you said breathlessly, “What are you doing here?” his face was flushed from drinking and his hair had escaped from its previous slicked back style and now was hanging in front of his dark eyes. You fingers twitched at the thought of running your hands through his hair as he loomed over you, gaze weighing heavily on your own.
“I want to be with you tonight,” was all he said before he attacked your lips. You gave in easily, mind clouded by drinks you were putty in his arms as he held you close to him. He was warm against the chill of the night and you gladly moved closer to him grabbing handfuls of his half unbuttoned shirt. You broke apart and you could feel his hot breath on your neck as he whispered in your ear.
“I'm still in love with you,” he breathed out, soul pouring through his eyes and into your own before you pulled his lips to yours. A few moments later he pulled away panting before gently moving away from your face and taking your hand in his placing a kiss on the scar closest to your wrist.
“You are beautiful,” he whispered against your skin before moving onto the next. He repeated this process kissing each and every scar on both of your arms and telling you how much he loved you before moving onto your back. The feeling of his rough lips against your back sent shivers down your spine and once he was finished your lips locked once more.
Once you reached the palace he pulled you behind him through the servants corridors stopping every few seconds to make sure you were still behind him as if he was afraid you were a dream and would disappear as soon as he looked away. The grand clock chimed for three in the morning when he pulled you into his chambers shutting the door and pressing you against it, kissing you passionately. Slowly as you moved closer to the bed his kisses grew softer and when he finally pulled himself away you met his eyes.
“Is this what you really want?” he asked between heavy breaths.
The air hung heavy as you slowly reached up to pull him into a kiss as your answer, when you broke away again you reached behind your back and slowly began undoing the buttons of your dress.
----
You woke as the clock chimed six with a start. The sun was just beginning to rise through the window and everything from the previous night came rushing back to you as your pounding headache cleared just enough to see who’s room you were in and your lack of any clothing. Thankfully Sehun was nowhere to be seen as you quickly threw your dress back on, collecting your shredded undergarments with an embarrassed blush before saying a quick prayer that you wouldn’t run into anyone in the hallway as you scurried back to your rooms. Thanking the gods that you weren’t caught you quickly ran yourself a hot bath, eager to wash last night not only from your body but your mind as well. The steam enveloped you, the scent of the bath oils filling the air as you let the heat of the water seep into your muscles. When you were finished you pulled on the soft robe and headed back into your room only to be met with Yixing sitting on an armchair next to the fireplace.
Quickly you pulled your robe even tighter and fastened the belt at the waist with multiple knots, “What are you doing here?” you exclaimed.
“Good Morning to you too Lady Y/n,” he said calmly, not moving from where he sat, “I’ll give you a few moments to get dressed then please come back here, I brought you breakfast and hangover medication. We have a lot to talk about.”
You gulped and nodded silently. Rarely was that amount of seriousness ever heard in Yixings voice so you scurried into your closet and pulled on a comfortable gown and plush sweater, quickly braiding your hair away from your face before returning back to the chair next to Yixing where breakfast awaited you. With a smile he urged you to take the medicine which quickly did a good job of clearing up most of your headache leaving only a dull throbbing.
He cleared his throat and placed his cup of tea back down on the table, folding his hand in his lap in a very royal manner, “I saw you last night,” he said.
You gaped at him, you thought that everyone would have already passed out cold by the time you and the King reached the palace, “How?” was all you asked.
“I came back earlier with Baekhyun who was far beyond drunk, I was heading to the kitchen to get a cup of tea and some things for him in the morning after I finally got him settled when I saw the two of you dashing through the servants corridors. I followed you just to make sure you were alright and I saw the two of you disappear into Sehun’s room,” he cleared his throat, “I pretty much assumed what happened after you didn’t come out for a while.”
Your cheeks were the brightest pink you had ever been before, you were so sure nobody had seen you and yet, one of your closest friends had caught the two of you in the act.
“Nobody else saw you two, just me,” he assured you, “But Y/n you know what this means for your future marriage. You must be careful from now on, I won’t tell anyone but you have to make sure nobody finds out,” he warned, “If they do, the chances of you finding a husband are slim to none.”
“I know,” you said, head hanging.
“The one way around that would be to marry Sehun,” he told you softly, “I don’t want to worry you Y/n, but what if you’re pregnant? It’s almost impossible to get the herb that will stop your pregnancy anywhere on the continent after it was outlawed and the fields were burned by our predecessors. What will you tell people then?”
“I don’t know.”
He squeezed your hand in a comforting manner, “I don’t mean to burden you but I just want you to make sure you’re being careful. I’ll help you in any way I can, I promise.”
“Thank you,” you told him with a weak smile.
“The ball is tonight,” He said standing and moving towards the door, “I don’t want to tell you something you already know but if things don’t go the way you want, my door is always open.”
He shut the door behind him as he left leaving you to finish eating alone. After spending your morning alone in your room as the clock struck twelve noon you headed down to the Library to eat lunch with Jiyoon and the other princesses. As they chattered away like the small birds outside your window in the morning you kept to yourself, focusing more on the food in front of you than the conversation around you. Yesterday you had agreed to spend the afternoon with the girls as they got ready for the Solstice ball that evening, it was the grandest party of the summer and they assured you that they would need all the time they could manage. As soon as the four of you had finished your plates were cleared and you headed up to Jiyoon’s chambers. Being the ever so attentive friend she was, Jiyoon noticed something was up and pulled you aside.
“Is something going on Y/n? You don’t seem like yourself…” she asked, taking your hand in hers.
You smiled softly and gave her hand a squeeze, “I’m sorry, I’m just so exhausted after last night. I had too much to drink and not enough sleep but I’ll be okay by this evening,” you assured her, “I left my things in my rooms, I’ll come straight here after I go and get it.”
She nodded and dropped your hand. You gave her a small wave before she disappeared into her chambers and you down the hall. When you had almost reached your rooms you paused when angry voices came drifting from one of the conference rooms.
“You must make a decision, your highness! The solstice ball is tonight!”
“Things in the Southern Continent are getting restless,” a second male voice shouted, “There will be a war soon and you must marry to secure your throne!”
“Forget Lady Haerin,” A third one said, “Marry Lady Y/n, she is the most powerful of any lord or lady in our country!”
“Things are no different in your brother’s country,” the second one said again, “His advisors are pressuring him to marry more than we are you! You are not a child anymore.”
You backed away mind spinning from the information you had gotten from only a few sentences. There would be a war with the southern continent? Lord Cha had mentioned trade had been slow but you had no idea. You quickly shook it off and moved on to your rooms before anyone could catch you listening in or Jiyoon would get worried.
----
Your mind was elsewhere as you let Jiyoon do what she would with your appearance, hours seemed to fly by so quickly until you were standing in front of the grand ballroom as the Speaker announced your arrival. You went in before Jiyoon since she was at a higher position than you were, the grand staircase seemed shorter than last time with everybody milling about and almost no eyes on you. As an attempt to avoid attention you had decided forgo the original dress you had planned to wear and wear something more plain. It was white with vines of little red flowers strewn around your shoulders, waist, and wrists. You definitely blended into the background compared to the dresses some of the other girls were wearing, Jiyoon sparkled next to you as you walked up to the dias to greet the king. The entire time you kept a blank expression, eyes trained on the floor, as you dropped into a low curtsy mumbling out a “Your Majesty,” before breaking apart from Jiyoon who joined her family sitting atop thrones and headed back into the crowd. Once everybody had been checked off the guest list one of the royal advisors climbed atop a pedestal and rang a small but piercing bell, drawing the attention to himself.
“The purpose of this evening’s ball is for His Royal Highness, The King, to have a final chance to spend time with the eligible ladies of the continent before choosing his bride. At midnight I ask you please to gather back here for the King to announce his bride and without any further, please let the festivities commence.”
The band struck up a tune and the dancefloor quickly filled with people, you wandered off to the agreed upon meeting place for you and Jiyoon once she was released from her royal duties. For most of the night you stayed huddled behind a large sculpture of flowers reading the small book about the continent’s greatest composers you had stashed in the many layers of your skirts. Jiyoon stayed to chat and keep you company for a while but left quickly to flit around the crowds dancing and chatting like the social butterfly she was. People came and went, most who saw you turned away at the first glimpse of you looming behind a book but the Princes periodically stopped to chat without you, hiding from their parents or the hordes of girls always swarming around them. Finally the all ganged up on you, Baekhyun stole your book and Minseok pulled you onto the dance floor, despite the constant panic at the back of your mind you found yourself having a good time with them as they traded off with you for dances. When they were finally done with you, your book was returned and you headed back to your spot with a dazed smile.
It was almost Midnight and Sehun hadn’t paid any attention to you all night, every now and again you would see him with Haerin hanging off his arm but nothing more. As you emerged from the edge of the crowd into the shaded wings of the ballroom you were met with the man himself.
“Follow me,” he muttered before turning and disappearing through one of the doors that led to the garden. You turned back to the crowd and quickly spotted a fuming Haerin before a hand grabbed your wrist and Sehun pulled you into the garden behind him.
“You should listen to the king when he gives you an order,” he said as you trailed behind him. You stayed silent until he finally stopped you in the middle of a patch of rose bushes.
You looked up to meet his eyes and tightened your fists around your skirts, trying not to let the small bit of hope you had left peek through if he was just going to torture you, “It’s almost midnight,” you told him, “You need to be inside to announce who you’re going to marry, why are you out here… with me?”
“I need to know,” he told you, reaching out to grab your hands softly in complete contrast to before, “I know I said I wouldn’t ask again but you have to tell me the truth now, after everything that’s happened. I love you more than anything in the world and no matter how many times I try to convince myself otherwise my heart always ends up going back to you and I think you feel the same way. This isn’t just for political power it’s because I want you and I have wanted you long before you became the Lady of Iyle. I need to know now, Y/n, if I asked you to marry me what would you say.”
You looked deep into his eyes and saw a reflection of yourself inside and whispered with all your heart, no moment of doubt, “Yes.”
He kissed you softly before heading back indoors right as the clock chimed for midnight hand intertwined with yours. Your heart pounded in your ears as he slipped his hand from yours and weaved around the crowd to stand with his advisors on the dias. Jiyoon quickly found your side as the same advisor from earlier began speaking, she squeezed your hand.
“Now, as the clock strikes midnight, his Royal Highness, King Sehun, will announce who will become his bride and the next queen of Oclaria.”
Everyone was silent as the trumpets wailed and Sehun stepped forward slowly, you felt eerily calm as your eyes moved across the crowd, seeing Haerin looking smug at the front of the crowd, and finally landing on Sehun where his gaze met yours.
“I am pleased to announce,” he said calmly, eyes never leaving yours, “That my bride and the next queen of Oclaria will be… Lady Y/n of Iyle!”
The crowd erupted around you as you took in all the shocked faces of officials throughout the room. You felt Jiyoon hug you tightly screaming into your ear before four guards surrounded you and brought you through the crowd and to the dias. Sehun outstretched his hand with a smile and without hesitation you placed your hand in his and stepped in front of the throne beside him and looked out across the crowd of cheering people with your hand still firmly wrapped in his.
I’ve actually been writing the outline to this for quite some time, but I keep getting stuck and now I’ve kinda scrapped most of it. I know the elements I want to keep - which I won’t reveal but they’re important. I feel as though once I have a soild plan, writing it out will be quick.

Summary: When a strange string of not so great events somehow and you with a job at the palace punching the wrong people can be not so great.
”I hate boats,” Kun muttered beside you. The sun hadn’t risen yet and your breaths were puffing around you in small clouds as you walked up the gang blank and onto the ship, wood creaking beneath your boots. Preparations began almost immediately you handed the letter to Lord Cha and somehow the next morning you were before dawn and boarding a ship as the crew were making the final preparations. Dreading the journey ahead and in need of more than one friendly face you invited Kun to come along to the capital with you and he begrudgingly accepted, much to his mother’s delight.
Chuckling, you nudged him with your shoulder, “You live on ana island, how can you hate boats?”
“I work on a farm, I never need to leave the island,”
“You’ve never wanted to go on an adventure and see the world?”
“Not on one of these floating death traps I don’t,” He huffed and pulled his jacket tighter around himself, “It’s almost summer, why does it still have to be so cold in the morning?” grumbling he trudged away, no doubt in search of breakfast.
A sigh escaped you as you felt the ship rocking beneath your feet, the salty air brushing over your face felt like home.Closing your eyes you were still and silent letting the sounds envelop you, boots against the deck, chattering of cailor, the crash of waves against the docks, the cry of a gull.Someone grasped your shoulder, eye shooting open you spun around to see Minseok snickering at your raised fists.
“I hope you weren’t planning on punching the Crown Prince of Edesea,” he gasped and turned away in fake shock, “That’s punishable by death,” He whispered as if it was some kind of terrible secret.
You frowned and stepped back from his mischievous smile, “Scare me again and we’ll see who dies first,” You shot him a glare before turning and marching away to the far side of the ship. Hearing his footsteps creaking against the deck and draping himself over the railing next to you.
He let out a long whistle and nudged you with his shoulder, “Feisty, I like it.” he paused, “It seems like you’ve finally found confidence, I like the new Y/n much, much better.”
Silence surrounded the two of you for a moment before finally you broke and turned to face him with a long sigh, “Don’t get all sappy now, It’s weird,” you grabbed his arm and dragged him halfway across the deck towards the door that led to the cabins below, “Let’s get something to eat before there’s nothing else left.”
“You can’t escape me forever Y/n,” he called after you with a smile, “We’re stuck on this boat for two weeks!”
Grunting you slammed the door behind you and climbed down the stairs to find Kun chatting away with one of the cooks. With a thud you sat on one of the benches next to him dug into the food that was put in front of you while they continued chatting away. A few minutes later the ship lurched and everyone rushed to the top deck to watch the ship leave port. You shoved your way to the railings and saw a crowd of people waving from the dock. The held banners and streamers and shouted wishes of luck on your journey. You stayed pressed against the railing listening to the shouts until you couldn’t see anything more than specks in the distance and all you could hear was the crashing waves and wind blowing past your face.
The candlelight flickered through your cabin illuminating it with a soft orange glow. Laying on your cot you traced the pattern on the ceiling with your eyes as the waves sloshed against the side of the boat rocking it slowly. Kun, who opted to be your roommate rather than bunk with the crew, was currently on deck retching the contents of his stomach over the side of the ship, so you were left alone for the time being. In no way were you looking forward to what was waiting for you when you got off the ship in the capital city but it was one of your responsibilities, there was no escaping it as much as the thought of another royal wedding made your stomach churn. Kun came back eventually and passed out after kicking off his shoes leaving you alone again. Eventually the rocking of the boat, Kun’s snoring, and even the candle flickering was too much to handle with your thoughts spinning out of control. Slipping out the door you rushed down the hallway and stopped in front of the door before knocking once and pushing it open. The light from the hallway spilled into the room from behind you illuminating Minseok’s half asleep figure.
“Y/n?” he asked, voice croaking with sleep. Shoving himself up on his elbows and pushing his hair out of his face to get a batter look, “What are you doing here, what time is it?”
“Can I come in?” you whispered while clutching the doorframe, even if Minseok had a private room the walls were thin and you didn’t want to wake anyone else up. You had no idea what time it was but you couldn’t stay in your room anymore and this was the only place you could think to go.
Shoving his hair out of his face he took a second look before moving as far over as the small would allow him to before falling off. “Yeah, come in and shut the door behind you,” he asked with concern, “Did something happen?”
Door clicking shut behind you, you entered the now darkened room and curled under the blanket beside Minseok, burying yourself into his side so he couldn’t see your watery eyes. But he didn’t make a move to wrap himself around you and instead stayed still.
“Can I hold you?” He asked softly.
There was a beat before you nodded, knowing it would make you feel better in the end. Slowly he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you even closer, moving up the blanket so it covered your torso as well as his, “It’s going to be okay right?” you whispered into his chest.
“I promise it’ll all be okay,” he whispered into your hair. Somehow, with those six words he calmed your spinning mind and your tears fell onto his nightshirt like dew drops.
“I’m sorry,” you sniffled trying to push off him, “I’m getting you all wet.”
Refusing to let you go he wrapped around you tighter and pulled you back onto the bed, “Don’t be,” he replied softly curling farther around you so you could both fit on the bed better. It was a comfortable silence, the rocking of the waves , your head pressed to his chest and listening to his heartbeat. You felt warm and safe curled up beside him, timidly you leaned backwards and tilted your chin upwards to find him looking back down at you. His eyes bore down into yours, you were sinking into the depths of his gaze and ever so slowly he leaned down. Time seemed to move in slow motion as he got closer and closer.
And you didn’t move away.
His lips met yours gently, as if you were as fragile as a butterfly’s wing. If he pressed to hard you might fall to pieces and in a way, you felt as if you would. He held you as if you were the most precious thing in the world but even something was different, it wasn’t the same. Soon his light snores filled the air and you softly untangled yourself from his grasp and slipped back down the hall into your own bed.
----
Everyone on the ship quickly fell into a routine during the first few days, even Kun had gotten over his seasickness with the help of a home made remedy from the cook, who was a man with almost as big of a personality as his belly and you quickly got along with. There hadn’t been a chance for you to speak with Minseok since that night, from the few glimpses you caught of him he was letting his heritage show. Like most people from Edesea he was an extremely talented sailor since he grew up on the Royal fleet, quickly he convinced the captain and crew to let him help even if he was a crown prince. You helped out sometimes but you really weren’t great at anything other than tying knots, so you mainly just got to know the other people onboard.
“There’s a storm coming,” the captain croned from his spot at your table. The eyes of everyone at the table shifted to him as he took another swig of ale and set his mug down harshly.
“How do you know that?” Kun inquired, “It was perfectly clear today?”
One of the other sailors cut him off, “Don’t question the captain boy, he’s been sailing these seas longer that you’ve been alive!” Kun pouted and turned his attention back to pushing his food around his plate lazily.
With a grunt the captain pushed up from the bench which scraped against the floorboards, “I’m sorry My Lady,” he began, “We will have to wait and see how bad the storm truly is before any decisions are made regarding the rest of the journey,” He stood and left stopping to bow before Minseok who was coming in to replace the seat he left open.
Much like Kun had before, you turned your eyes to your plate and began playing with the scraps which remained. You could feel the slight rattle and creak of the bench as he set his plate down and finally sat.
“What’s happened?” he asked openly, “Has something gone wrong?”
“The captain says there’s going to be a storm,” you muttered quickly keeping your eyes trained on the plate, “I hope it doesn’t delay us too much,” you added halfheartedly. In all honesty there was something deep down inside of you desperately whooshing for the storm to stop the ship from arriving at all but you knew it was your duty to go.
The conversation quickly drifted to another topic and you grabbed your plate to leave, eager to get away from the guilt you felt whenever Minseok was around. Nobody seemed to notice as you slipped out the door and back to your cabin where you pulled out a book and began absentmindedly flipping through the pages. Quickly you found yourself leaving the book and heading into the deck where the stars twinkled above you. Letting the sea air fill your lungs and the light of the lanterns dance across your face you relaxed as the sound of boots against the deck echoed behind you.
“Lady Y/n, you really must tell me if I’ve done something wrong,” Minseok stressed from behind you, “I can’t stand having you avoid me like this!”
You turned to him in the moonlight. His eyes reflected the stars and the soft glow of candles emphasized the crease in his brow. “Crown Prince Minseok of Edesea, I’m sorry, but the kids we shared, I-I do not feel the same way!”
Almost immediately he softened and his shoulders relaxed. He let out a deep sigh and gathered your hands in his. “Oh Y/n! I’m so glad!” He exclaimed, “I was afraid it was something worse, to be honest I do not feel that way about you either. For a time I was convinced that I loved you but though I do still love you, it is the love between two friends or a brother and his sister.”
If there was one word to describe what you were feeling in that moment it would be grateful. But at the same time you and Minseok both knew what it meant by acknowledging that the feelings between you two were in no way romantic. Your heart was still elsewhere and you did not know how long it would remain there.
——
Shouts of sailors from above deck echoed through the cabin. Rain pounded in every direction like a war drum as thunder shook the walls and rattled the portholes. As violent waves threw the ship side to side you cot slid across the floor throwing both you and Kun onto the ground. You dragged him to his feat as the boat pitched to the side again, clutching to the wall you steadied yourself enough to make your way to the far wall.
Putting your hands on his shoulders you forced Kun to sit, “Stay here,” you ordered, “I’m going to see what’s happening, brace yourself against the wall and whatever you do, don’t come up on deck!”
You gave him a quick squeeze before the boat pitched again and you were out the door shoulder slamming into the wall opposite. Pulling yourself up the stairs you burst through the door and landed in a heap in the deck. Rain and boot steps echoed amongst the frenzied shouting, you were soaked immediately by the torrents of rain falling from the sky and clouding your vision. Furiously you wiped your eyes just in time to hear the shouts and giant wave curling itself over the boat. With all your strength you clung to the railing closest to you as the wave enveloped the deck. The salt water burned your lungs as you gasped for breath, when your head broke the surface as your eyes cleared the ship was in shambles.
“Minseok!” You screamed hoarsely. His head turned focusing on you before rushing over and tethering you in his arms, bracing the both of you on a railing as the boat pitched again.
“What are you doing here?” He demanded, “it’s not safe, go back down to your cabin and tell the others don’t come up on deck until someone comes to tell you it’s safe.” In that moment he seemed like a natural king and you were frozen like a fish out of water.
He started to pull away when you dug your fingers into his shirt, “Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” You asked.
“I will, now go!”
You pushed away from him and began to climb back down below deck as the boat suddenly tilted to its side. Thrown off you balance you fell down to the hallway floor, your wrist throbbed but you ignored it as you pushed yourself back into your cabin where Kun was waiting, the same as you hand left him. Without a word you gathered all the pillows and blankets from the beds, piling them around you as a makeshift cushion as you continued to slide across the floor. Soaking and shivering you curled up tightly and prayed that the stir would be over soon and the ship with all its passengers would end up in one piece.
——
The violent crashing of waves stopped eventually and died down to a soft rocking before the boat came to a complete stop. You had no idea how long you sat huddled in a corner with Kun waiting for the storm to finish, things were strewn about your room having fallen from where they were previously stored. There was a snake of guilt coiled around your stomach when Minseok came and brought you up to the deck, the captain had docked the ship in the port of a small island about two thirds of the way up the coast, and when you saw the state the ship was in, you knew why. It was a wreck, thankfully nobody was killed but many people were injured and you had lost almost all of the cargo that wasn’t in the hold. The worst part of all was that the main sail was torn to shreds and the mast fallen over completely. You knew it was bad when Minseok grimaced as he walked past it and onto the dock. You all headed straight to the Inn where hopefully rooms and warm beds would be waiting for you, from what you saw as you walked through the town it looked tiny, only a few houses and farm all huddles around the main cobblestone street. The houses all seemed to be in the same style, thatched roofs and brick walls all painted different colours. Flowers hung from the eves as they prepared for their own summer celebration. Eyes peeked through the windows as you paraded past and to the Inn.
It was a large stone building with grand wooden doors and windows on every side to let the light inside, thankfully nobody else was visiting the small town so you rented out all the rooms though you still had to share.
“Dinner will be served in the dining room at seven,” the innkeeper explained, “I’ll gather the village to come at that time too, until then you all should go rest up and have a warm bath.”
You thanked them before you split apart and headed to your rooms, taking what could be salvaged of your belongings with you. The crew and passengers had divided the rooms amongst themselves, they had decided to give you and Minseok the nicest room as much as the two of you protested. Kun decided to stay in a room with some of the other boys in the crew so it was just the two of you. The both of you reached the top of the stairs and opened the door to reveal the surprisingly large room with two cots on either side, you let out a long sigh and dropped your things on the bed closest to the door. The salt water dried on your skin was starting to itch.
“I’m going to take a bath,” you announced, pulling out a clean dress from your bag. You could see that Minseok was obviously in worse shape than you, having spent the whole storm trying not to let the boat sink, being pummeled with waves and rain. He sat on the cot head tilted back against the wall, exhaustion pulling heavy underneath his closed eyes, you cleared your throat.
“I’ll head to the bathhouse with the other, you can use the one in the one in the room,” Ever the picture perfect prince he tried to protest but you slipped out the door and joined the crowd heading to the bathhouse in town.
There weren’t many women on the ship compared to men, a few mothers of small families heading home for the summer festivals and their daughters. You split from the group of men and headed into the side for females stripping off your clothes and submerging yourself in the hot water. You chatted for a while and washed yourselves off before heading back to the Inn as the sun was setting, painting the sky pink and orange.
The dinning hall was filled with chatter as you enter, it was packed with everyone form the ship and everyone from the town. Quickly, you were escorted over to the table with Minseok, the Captain, and who you assumed to be the heads of the village.
“Good you’re here,” the captain said as you took a seat next to Minseok. Everyone seemed to have cleaned up well and looked a little better than they did when you first arrived.
“Nice to meet you,” you introduced yourself to the people around the table, “I’m Lady Y/n, of Iyle. Thank you for helping us on our way to the capital, we are truly sorry if we are causing any trouble for you.”
“It’s no problem at all, my lady. We rarely get visitors here on our island and we’re glad to help out,” a big man with a grizzly beard responded in a cheery voice, “It’s too bad you got caught in that storm, it really came out of nowhere. The Captain and the prince here have explained your situation and the village will help repair the sail and the mast.”
“Now it’ll take a few days,” the Captain added, “But if we’re able to leave at dawn in three days time we should be able to reach the capital with a few hours to spare.”
“As a thanks for everything you’ve done for us I would like to invite any of your sailors who are willing to come and train in Iyle’s naval academy free of charge.” you offered.
“Thank you my lady,” they all chorused in awe.
“I’ll extend the same invitation if any of you wish to train in the Royal Naval Academy of Edesea,” Minseok added on.
-----
You stayed and chatted a bit over dinner but retired to your room quickly, still exhausted, as Minseok decided to stay and help make plans. Would you really be able to make it before the festivities start? What would happen when you did arrive? Questions like these churned in your mind and kept you from sleeping until the door squeaked open and Minseok slipped in.
“Did you really have to one up me like?” you chided from your spot curled under the thin blanket. The summer air was hot so anything heavier would have suffocated you in the heat as you slept. He chuckled as he began to pull of his boots and vest.
“I couldn’t just give them nothing,” he told you with a smile, “What kind of prince would I be then?’
“Still, couldn’t you have just give them a jewel or something? I’m new to this whole ruling thing…”
“Y/n, Iyle is powerful enough that if you wanted to take over Oclaria they wouldn’t stand a chance. People already respect you and it’s not just the ones back in your palace. Don’t worry too much, you were quite literally born for this, get some sleep.”
You sighed and rolled to face the wall as he continued to get changed. Minseok was the oldest of all the princes and if he thought you were good enough, he was probably right…… right?
-----
Everyone pitched in to help rebuild the ship, even the children did their part by organizing tools and taking messages back and forth. You ended up being put with those who would repair the sails because you had so much experience embroidering and sewing with Jiyoon back in Arye. Slowly you get to know more and more about the village and the people who lived in it. They were mainly a fishing village which quickly turned into a port for traders from the south on their journey to the capital, the population used to be larger but all the young people would end up travelling away with the ships so slowly the town shrunk. The man in charge of organizing the sail repair used to run a garment shop when the town was busy but now he owns a small form since there was no more business for a garment shop.
At night everyone would meet back at the Inn for dinner and share stories about their days, Kun quickly fell in with the other kids in the village and on the ship and got involved in a lot of their hijinks. On one particular occasion they somehow managed to make all of the water in the bath house ice cold for an entire day. But sure enough by dawn after three days time you were ready to set sail. You wished the town fair well and promised to visit again on your way back, waving from the deck you watched the town disappear as the sun rose over the horizon. A few of the men and women had taken your offer, you wrote them a letter and sent them to the capital with a message for the head of the academy.
----
The capital port was bustling with people just as you remembered it, the smell of fish and horse drawn carriages overwhelmed you as you were rushed off the ship with Minseok and into the carriage from the palace. The driver hurriedly explained that now it was noon and the gala of the first night of the summer festival would begin as soon as the sun set. You sped through the city watching the townhouses slowly disappear as you could finally catch a glimpse of the royal palace in the distance. WIth your heart thudding in you chest you turned your eyes from the window and back to Minseok who was sitting across from you.
“Are you really going to be okay Y/n?” he asked, “you look like you’re going to be sick.”
And you felt like you were going to be sick too, to say you were panicking would be an understatement.
“Remember what I told you that first night in the inn? You are only second to the king in power, you don’t have to be scared.”
You met his eyes and saw the truth in them. Swallowing the lump in your throat you nodded as you continued your climb to the palace.
As soon as you arrived you and your trunks were swept out of the carriage by a flurry of maids and through the familiar halls to the room you would be staying. A few of them seemed surprised as they recognized you but thankfully didn’t say anything as they bowed and left your room. It looked just like every other guest room in the palace but you could feel you balance wavering as you drifted to the balcony which overlooked the gardens from your dreams and nightmares. You slammed the windows shut and threw the blinds closed in a panic trying desperately to calm your breathing. Minseok said he would come to escort you to the gala when the clock struck seven and as the journey to the palace was so long it was already five and you needed to begin getting ready. You were starting to regret not bringing your own maid as you began unpacking all the jewelry, makeup, and clothes which had been packed in your trunks. Finally you found the package that was your dress for the gala and pulled away the tissue revealing a soft white dress which faded into pale yellows and oranges as it reached the floor. The neckline was square with capped sleeves and a deep back exposing the silver trails of scars on your skin that you once tried desperately to hide. Once your hair and makeup was finished, decorated with pearls and strands of crystals you felt and looked royal. You felt different than you had ever felt before and as much as you wanted to change back into the plain and comfortable dress you had been wearing earlier you knew this was necessary, not only for you, but to set and example and show everyone else what Iyle really was.
Just as the clock on your wall struck seven there was a knock on the door. You walked over and opened it to reveal Minseok.
“You really look like a princess,” he breathed out, eyebrows shooting up.
“Is it too much?” you asked, “I have a few minutes to change..” you said, starting to turn away as he caught your wrist.
“It’s perfect Lady Y/n,” he said gently.
“Thank you Prince Minseok.”
The sun had just begun to dip below the horizon as you walked through the halls, you were a few minutes late and the butler explained almost everyone was inside already including the King. You gulped as you arrived behind the double doors.
“I’ll go in first,” Minseok told the caller, “Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?”
“I’m alright,” you assured him before taking a step back as the caller announced his name and the guards opened the doors allowing the chatter and applause to spill into the foyer. As the doors closed again you took a deep breath and moved in front of the doors. They began to open, bathing you in the light of the chandeliers as the caller shouted in his booming voice,
“Presenting, Y/n, Lady of Iyle!”
You were momentarily blinded by the lights as the entire room fell silent, the only sound, your heels clicking methodically on the marble staircase. The crowd with mouths hanging open stared at the silver trails along your arms and back. But you held your head high and refused to let them see what was writhing inside you as you scanned the crowd, seeing Minsek smiling at you from the bottom of the staircase and as you reached the final step your eyes locked on his. He was sitting on the dias, his throne, though the same one you saw him sit in before looked different because now he looked like a King. His eyes bore into you as you took Minseok’s arm and followed him to where the rest of the royals were waiting beside the throne. When you had finally come to a standstill the chatter and music finally started up again until the doors opened again.
“Presenting the final guest. Lady Haerin, Daughter of Lord Shin of Ostus!”
As she began to descend the stairs you turned and saw him rise from his throne, walking to meet her at the bottom of the staircase as the sense of dread began to build until you saw him reach out and kiss her hand before taking her arm in his and leading her onto the dance floor. You felt like you were going to be sick.

Summary: When a strange string of not so great events somehow and you with a job at the palace punching the wrong people can be not so great.
We travelled through the city during the night with the stars above us. The ship that would take us to the mainland was leaving from the port on the other side of the island which held Oclaria’s capital city at dawn and not a moment later. You, Cha, and his small entourage of two guards and a couple of citizens from Iyle which had come with him to visit family would be travelling down the coast of Oclaria which was the majority of the east coast of the continent. Iyle took up all of the southernmost coast of Oclaria and most of the islands in the surrounding area along with part of the eastern coast. Edesea owned the other half of the southern coast of the continent which meant all the trade coming from the other continents went through Edeasea or Iyle. Now it was theorized that ships could travel up the coasts without ever coming in contact with the two countries but the tropical storms which were rampant off the coast of Edesea and Medezia stopped all ships up the west. On the east coast the small islands provided to tight of a space for the large trade ships to navigate, forcing all trade to go through the port cities on the southern coast.
Nobody asked questions and you were grateful because you could still feel the sting of tears freshly. By the time the boat was ready to board at dawn, your tears had dried. It wasn’t the first time you had been on the ship from the mainland to the capital, after all, when you first arrived you had to get to the capital somehow. But you had only been to the northern part closest to Arye, never had you seen the southern lands that stretched down the coast. The sun shone between the clouds, breaking through in bright beams which seemed to descend straight from the heavens. The briny sea air filled your lungs and seemed to travel through your spine, into your lungs and all the way down to your toes, wrapping you in its salty embrace. You let it flush you of all the anxiety and sadness trapping your heart like a cage and stood with your eyes closed, fingers curling around the railing of the deck until the bellowing horn blew. The ship was docking on the mainland and as you rejoined the rest of the travellers and smiled as you stepped off the ship and onto the land.
New horses were already waiting for you on the dock, prepared to take you through the bustling port city and down the coast on your journey to Iyle. You took one last look at the castle in the distance and left your heart locked away inside it with the king as it disappeared behind the tall ships and building as you set off down the road.
Every night we would stop at a town and stay the night at an Inn. Your nights were usually spent over a warm meal in the pub downstairs, listening to the stories of weary travellers and sometimes even telling some of your own. It always felt warm during those times, not just because of the roaring fireplace but because of boisterous laughter and open smiles as people talked freely like they were old friends instead of strangers who had just met.
Oclaria was never as developed as countries like Vraetis. Of course, they still had the latest technologies but buildings were never rebuilt, only patched up to keep them standing, roads were made with cobblestones from years ago but more commonly dirt. Yet the outdated country had a sort of haunting beauty to it, crumbling castles and roads which were more akin to beaten paths made through the wear of years.
On one side the road you travelled sharp cliffs dropped into crashing waves, gulls cried overheads before diving below the surface. Somedays you could feel the salt spray on your face while others the sun shone brightly on the rolling hills to your right. Tall grasses danced in the wind small flowers beginning to bloom as spring was right around the corner.
It was five days later when you first crossed the border into Iyle. The town was bustling, they called it ‘the gateway to Iyle’ as it was the town every traveller stopped in before heading into the territory. Market stalls lined every street, selling anything you could imagine as your horses waded through the sea of people who stopped and waved when they recognized Lord Cha. Some people began waving to me as well and I did my best to smile and wave back, as we moved further down the street people began cheering, children ran up beside us and stuck flowers in our saddle bags. By the time we reached the Inn we would be staying at my cheeks were sore from smiling so much and everyone in our party was decorated with blossoms from head to toe and chatting excitedly amongst themselves.
You wandered into the dining room which was oddly empty and sat down across from Lord Cha. In all the Inns you had been to before this were packed with travellers but this one was extraordinarily quiet.
“I see you’re pretty popular,” You teased as you grabbed a bread roll out of the bread basket in front of him, “Kissing babies left and right.” He smiled as you tore off a piece of the loaf and stuffed it into your mouth.
“I could say the same for you, I don’t think I’ve seen a genuine smile from you since we left the capital,” He reached over and grabbed a stray flower petal that was still left in your hair.
You ducked your head and stared at the half-eaten bread in your hands. You cleared your throat and looked back up at him, “What’s with the flowers anyways, and why is it so quiet here?” You asked trying to quickly change the subject.
He let out a chuckle, “Well my dear, the reason for the flowers and the lack of people is the same. On the last day of spring, the people of Iyle have a celebration we call the final blossom, It’s a time to gather with your family and give thanks for everything the year has brought as well as pray for the coming harvest. We celebrate by giving each other flowers and fresh produce and everyone travels to stay with their families for the weeks leading up to it. The festival itself lasts for three days with village feasts and games for families to play, flower wreaths and garlands are hung from every place imaginable. It’s easily the largest holiday in all of Iyle.”
“I never knew about it,” You sighed taking another chunk of bread and chewing idly. If a holiday was so big why wasn’t it talked about all over?
“Most of the other countries have a similar festival around this time of the year but nowhere places such an importance on it as Iyle,” Lord Cha explained when he saw the confusion on your face, “At the time of the actual festival we’ll be in the capital.”
That night you stayed up for hours talking to Lord Cha and some of the others about the traditions of Iyle until finally the day of riding caught up with you and you retired to your room for a well-needed bath. In the warm water, foaming with the scent of lavender you floated through dreams of dancing and singing, laughing between flowers with your parents who were soon joined by many of your new friends. As soon as his face danced into your mind, surrounded by familiar blossoms, of yellow and white, it was as if the bath water had turned cold and you climbed out. Drying off and crawling into bed where he crept back into your thoughts and the familiar warmth wrapped around you and the two of you danced into your dreams.
In the morning the town sent you off with more flowers and baskets of fresh peaches in the morning, wishing you all a safe trip and happy last blossom. Your group continued to grow smaller as members broke off to head to their hometowns and reunite with their families for the holidays. It took another four days of travelling down the coast, each town filled with flowers before you finally reached the port town where you would board a ship that would take you to Iyle’s capital. The capital was, in fact, one of the smallest towns in Iyle, the largest cities lay along the southern coast, always filled with people but the capital was nestled among the many islands dotted around the eastern coast. It was only a small village nestled around the castle, a few farms to provide food, nowhere near as large as the royal palace and the city surrounding it. You could see it in the distance as you hung over the railing of the ferry boat. The sun was just beginning to rise as you let the ocean spray blow across your face, gulls chirped overhead as the small ship navigated between the maze of islands but you could see the spire of the castle in the distance. The planks of the deck creaked behind you as Lord Cha came to rest his forearms over the railing beside you.
“No matter how many times I leave or how many places I go, coming back home is always the best part,” he sighed, taking a deep breath and letting the smell of ocean spray and salt fill his nostrils, “The smell of the sea never gets old.”
“I always seemed to think the adventure was the best part,” you sighed, slumping down farther. You gaze followed a gull soaring across the sky and diving to the sea.
He let out another deep chuckle next to you, “Not when you live here.”
“And why’s that?”
“You’ll see,” was all he said before pushing back up and heading to the front of the ship, “We’ll be there in a few moments!” He called, “You should come up to the front for your first time seeing the magnificent capital.”
You took one more deep breath and closed your eyes, letting the sunlight wash over your face before pushing yourself up and following him and the rest of the passengers over to the bow of the ship. It was like something straight out of a romance novel as the ship turned around the last island, revealing the castle and city below just as the sun broke over the horizon. People chittered excitedly beside you as the boat pulled into the dock, though it was only just dawn people waved happily as the crowds departed from the ship. You watched as families reunited with a smile and even though you weren’t running into someone's arms and being held so tight it felt like you couldn’t breathe you felt at home. You followed Lord Cha through the cobbled streets of the village, as you passed by people were only just beginning to wake up and the waved sleepily as you passed by and headed towards the magnificent castle. You could just glimpse the fields stretching out behind the edge of the town before you passed through the gates and entered the castle’s courtyard. The staff bowed as you passed, still following behind Lord Cha, you could hear them whispering excitedly behind their baskets of flowers once you had passed but it didn’t seem ill-intended.
“I’m sure you’re exhausted from the journey,” Lord Cha said as he showed you down winding corridors and to a grand room, “You can have the rest of this day to relax and do whatever you wish. I will call upon you tomorrow since we have some very important things to discuss,” he explained with sudden seriousness.
You nodded and followed him into the room, sighing at its beauty and how soft and inviting the grand canopy bed looked.
“Meals are served in the kitchen but you can ring for someone if you need-”
“I’m sure I will find it,” you assured him before not so gently pushing him towards the door, “Just go relax,” you told him with a wave before shutting the door and turning back around to admire the room once more. The room itself was the grandest thing you had ever seen, it was nowhere near as luxurious as Jiyoon’s quarters but it was almost twice the size. The bed itself must have been large enough to fit ten people comfortably with a sheer canopy surrounding it to give it a sense of elegance while still leaving some privacy. There was a sitting room, dining room, vanity, and work space all in one large open space and after some exploring, you found out there were two separate empty rooms, a separate bathing room, dressing room, and across the hall was a balcony. You laid on the cloudlike bed for a total of five minutes before you got up and began to explore again. You found a cloak in the wardrobe and threw it on as you decided to go out and explore the town.
You pulled the hood over your head as you slipped out the front gates. Everyone you passed offered you a friendly smile which you easily returned as they passed with their carts and baskets, the majority heading towards the castle, no doubt to prepare for the festival based on the sheer number of flowers they all carried with them. You followed the stream of people and eventually ended up at the market place by the docks where you had first arrived from, though now it was filled with people and merchants shouting out their wares. Brightly painted signs advertised ‘Flowers and Fruits! Perfect for a loved one this Festival!’ or fishermen shouting out the prices of the seafood just brought in from their ships. There were even a few traders from the south selling fabrics and cooking utensils. Soon enough your stomach was rumbling and you followed your nose to a little bakery tucked into one of the alleys. You were immediately drawn to a deliciously frosted bun sitting right in front of the display case.
“What can I get for you?” the man who you were assuming was the baker asked with a large smile.
“One of whatever that is,” you said, pointing to the bun in the display case.
“Good choice,” he said with a chuckle, “Made them fresh this morning, one of the town favourites,” he told you as he grabbed a small plate and placed a purple frosted one onto it.
You admired the quaintness of the little bakery, the table cloths were slightly mismatched and seemed to be handsewn which gave it a very familiar sense. The floral edgings and patterns were very familiar to the ones your mother had made when she was still alive.
“Would you like anything to drink?” the baker asked as he put your pastry on the counter.
You stopped and looked at the menu, half of the things you had never heard of before, ‘What do you recommend?”
“We just got a specialty tea from Medazia made from hibiscus flowers and other fruits, it goes really well with pastries,” the baker told you.
“I’ll have one of those,” You continued to chat with him as he prepared the tea.
“Are you new in town?” he asked, pulling down a teacup, “I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”
“Something like that,” you hummed as you sat down at a nearby table, you don’t know why but you decided to make up and excuse, “Just came in to visit some family for the festival.”
“Ahh yes, there’s always an influx of people during the festival season even if they don’t have family, the capital is always the most beautifully decorated town and the feast I the castle is open to everyone,” he stated proudly, “When did you arrive?”
“Just this morning, on the first ship from the mainland.”
He let out a long whistle, “You came in with Lord Cha then?”
You nodded.
“You must’ve heard the rumours then, people are saying somebody that came back with Lord Cha is the lost heir of Iyle,” You gave him a confused look as he put the scone and teacup on your table, “It’s just a rumour though,” he assured you, “Don’t believe everything people tell you.”
He left you with your thoughts and went back to whatever he was doing in the kitchen. The rumours he talked about didn't really cross your mind as you finished your pastry while peering into the bustling market below. A group of performers started dancing at one point, and it even brought a smile to your face watching everyone play along with the jugglers and other performers. You thanked the baker and left after finishing your tea, it might have been from Meadazia but the fruity tea really reminded you of the lanky prince.
It was still bright out so you decided to stroll through the fields on your way back to the palace. The sunlight washed over you as you wandered between the dirt roads separating the farmer’s fields and pastures from one another. You waved to a group of workers picking an unfamiliar plant as you walked along the little stream running beside the road. A little way later you found the house of those who the unfamiliar crop belonged to as they were selling it out front in a small handcrafted stand.
“Would you like to try some?” You flicked you head to where the voice was coming from and your eyes fell on the little boy running the stand, he couldn’t have been older than eleven but he looked at you with a bright smile.
“Sure…” you said taking a few steps closer, “But what exactly is it?”
He giggled like little bells, “I knew you looked new, this is your first time in the capital right?” He asked with a smirk and you nodded, “This is a rose-orange,” he explained, holding up the little round fruit, “It only grows in Iyle and we always eat it for the final blossom festival since this is the only time it’s ready to harvest.”
“Does it taste like oranges?” you asked him, taking the little pink fruit out of his hands and examining it closely. Weren’t oranges usually bigger, and you know, orange? This fruit was only about the size of a plum and pink, not orange.
“Not at all, to be honest, I have no idea why they call them rose oranges,” the boy explained, “They aren’t even a citrus fruit.”
You laughed at the way he scrunched up his nose before following his lead and taking a bite out of the fruit, “This is amazing!” you exclaimed, mouth still full of fruit.
“I knew you’d like it,” he said, laughing at the way juice was dripping down the sides of your mouth and chin, “Why don’t you stay for lunch, I’m sure my mom won’t mind.”
“Really?” You asked as he rounded the corner and flipped the sign over so it said closed. He grabbed your hand and started pulling you towards the little farmhouse.
“Really, really,” he said, “the workers are coming in from the fields for break anyways, what's wrong with another mouth to feed? My name’s Kun by the way.”
“My name is Y/n.”
“Nice to meet you Y/n.”
“Nice to meet you too Kun.”
You followed him around the side of the house and back to where an old barn was except it had been cleaned out completely and instead there were a few large tables and benches where people were eating. He pushed you down onto the bench before disappearing to get two plates of food from his mother.
“You’re the girl that was on the road earlier,” The boy sitting across from you exclaimed. He and the other boys around you couldn’t be any older than you were, they were all staring at you like you were an alien.
You cleared your throat, “Uh yeah I’m Y/n.”
“She’s new in the capital,” Kun cut in, setting a plate of food down in front of you, “These guys are, Eizo, Jungwon, Fen, and, Junseo. You’re probably the only female that’s ever paid them any attention so they’re all probably in love with you know.”
You laughed as Kun was met with cries of complaint and food scraps. For a while, you stayed and chatted with the workers and even helped them in the fields for a while before they sent you off with a basket of rose oranges free of charge other than the promise to come back to visit. As you left you heard the boys organizing a bet to see which of them could get you to go on a date with them first. You laughed to yourself as you continued back down the road and towards the castle.
The rest of your afternoon was spent exploring the castle itself and when dinner rolled around you made your way down to the kitchen with the rest of the staff and pulled out the chair beside Lord Cha.
“Did you have a good day exploring?” he asked between bites of chicken, “I saw you coming back with that basket of rose oranges.” He smiled as your cheeks turned pink and you choked on a bit of chicken.
“I didn’t steal them if that’s what you’re thinking,” you told him with a frown. He shrugged and went back to picking at his food, “I really didn’t!” you exclaimed, “They were a gift after I helped them in the field!”
“Don’t worry y/n, I know you wouldn’t steal anything,” he assured you, “It’s nice that you’re getting along with the locals, having their trust will be good for the future.”
You frowned at his comment, “I guess….” You chatted with him for a bit as the two of you finished up your food.
“Can we meet in my study tomorrow after you’ve finished eating breakfast?” he asked, you nodded and wished him goodnight before you left shortly after and collapsed into the giant bed after changing into one of the nightgowns you found in the wardrobe.
The next morning you woke to a maid pulling your curtains open and letting the sunlight filter in. You squinted against the brightness, groaning and pushing yourself up onto your elbows.
“What time is it?” you yawned, collapsing back onto the bed and pulling the quilts back over your head. A moment later it was ripped off you and the bed entirely while the maid was staring down from above you.
“You’ve already slept through breakfast and you have to meet with Lord Cha in an hour, there is no way you’re going back to sleep,” She ordered, pulling you into a standing position, “I let you have the day to yourself yesterday but you aren’t getting off the hook today,” she grumbled before shoving you into the bathroom with an order to wash yourself up as quickly as possible. When you came out of the washroom the maid was gone and there was a tray of food with a note. Instructions telling you to get ready and dress nicely with the clothes in the wardrobe and meet Lord Cha in his study as soon as possible.
You knocked once before entering, Lord Cha’s study was almost identical to the one back in the royal palace, even down to the bookshelves lining the walls.
“You’re right on time,” Lord Cha said, taking his eyeglasses off and coming to meet you at the door.
“Why did you want to see me?” you asked with a smile.
He brushed some imaginary dust off his pants before meeting your eyes, “Actually, it’s not me who wants to see you, It’s someone else.” With that, he turned and walked out of the study. You followed him all the way to the east wing of the palace and the old library where someone was waiting for you.
“She looks just like her father,” the man said as soon as you sat down across from him. His face was wrinkled with age and his gray hairs were going every which way like the glasses which sat crooked on the end of his nose.
“You knew my father?”
He cleared his throat, surprised at your immediate response and pushed his glasses back onto his face, “I guess I should introduce myself, my name is Son Hwannim, I was your father’s tutor and I’ve known him from the moment he was born. He was always my favourite student, much brighter than his brothers.”
“Brothers?,” you asked in confusion, “my father was an only child,” How did this man know your father.
“I take it there’s still a lot you don't know y/n,” he said, glancing at Lord Cha, “Let me explain it all to you.”
You looked between the two men before nodding your head silently, confused by the whole situation.
“I guess I should start by introducing myself in more detail,” he sighed, “I was and still am the private tutor of the last Lord of Iyle’s four sons, your father was the second eldest. He was never favoured by his father, too headstrong and stubborn, not easily enough manipulated like the others. Their father, your grandfather, was like a tyrant, he treated the people of Iyle terribly and your father wanted to change that, in an attempt to control him, your grandfather set up an arranged marriage with the daughter of a neighbouring territory. What your grandfather didn’t know is that your father had already fallen in love with the baker’s daughter, your mother. He tried to refuse the marriage but the other Lord’s daughter was already infatuated with him and wouldn’t take no for an answer, she was a frightening young woman, that one. Your father and mother had no other options so they married in secret and fled to Arye with help from Lord Cha who was your father’s best friend at the time. The Lord’s daughter was so obsessed when she heard the news that they had fled she flew into a rage and disappeared, we didn’t think much of it at the time as the eldest son was taking your grandfather’s place as he got older and eventually died. But only a few years after your grandfather’s death his eldest son passed away without ever marrying and with no heir. With your father gone the role fell onto the shoulders of the two youngest brothers but they had already been married off to royalty from the southern continent. Your father’s youngest brother was the only one he trusted enough to keep in contact with after he left Iyle and the last thing we heard from him was that he had just been blessed with a baby girl. Without an heir Cha took over the governing of Iyle until we could persuade your father to return, he made the changes your father wanted happen and we thought he would surely return but we were met with horrible news. That lord's daughter never disappeared, she was hunting your parents, intent on ruining your lives like they supposedly ruined hers. She was the one who started the fire and when she found out you hadn’t died with them she followed you to the palace and married the king. Cha arrived just after you had left to the capital and followed you to make sure nothing happened to you and eventually he brought you back here.”
“So you’re saying the dead Queen of Arye was the one who killed my parents?” you asked with tears streaming down your face. They both nodded.
“She’s been trying to ruin your life since you were born.”
“You tell me this insane story about my family out of nowhere, so why do I believe you?” you hiccuped as more tears streamed down your face, “Why did they never tell me?”
“We think your parents also knew what was going on, and they were trying to protect you,” Lord Cha explained, “I know it’s a lot to take in Y/n but you know what this means right? You're the only heir the territory of Iyle.”
“You don’t have to make any decisions now, we know it’s a lot to take in but we thought you should know,” Lord Cha said, voice full of regret as he took in your bedraggled appearance, “I’ll walk you back to your room and you can come talk to us further whenever your ready.”
You nodded and stood up to leave, just as you were about to leave you whispered a quick ‘thank you’ directed at the man still sitting at the table before going back to your room.
You stayed there for a day and a half. Curled up under your blankets crying, but it was different from all the times before, when you cried because of pain, whether it be emotional or physical. There has always been a tightness that wound its way around your heart but now you were crying from relief, all the things you had wondered about and the secrets that tormented you had finally been revealed and by the time your tears had all dried up it was like the weight of the world had been lifted off your shoulders and you finally felt at peace with your parents passing.
On the second day, you got dressed and headed to the bakery where you greeted the baker again and bought a box of pastries before heading back to the field where Kun and his friends worked. They gratefully accepted your offer of food and help in the fields as you were given a basket and set to work. As you plucked rose oranges and filled your basket you realized that you may have never wanted to be a queen but there didn’t seem to be any escaping the responsibility of governing and maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if you had people you trust by your side to support you, after all, don’t those who never want power make the best rulers.
-----
“I’ll do it!” was the first thing you said as you burst into Lord Cha’s study that evening, “I’ll become the Lady of Iyle.”
His arms wrapped around you in a tight hug before he pulled away with a huge smile, “I always knew you could do it Y/n,” he told you, “You won’t be alone, Mr. Son and I will be there to help you the whole way through.”
“It’s what my father would have wanted,” you agreed.
“I’ll arrange a meeting in the morning, you should go have a bath and go to bed, you look exhausted.”
You nodded and walked back to your room where the maid from earlier was already waiting.
“There’s hot water already waiting for you, go take a bath and I’ll make the bed,” she told you, “and I’m happy you finally figured it out our new Lady of Iyle, don’t worry too much, they’ll love you.”
You thanked her before heading to the bathroom and sinking into the hot water and letting it seep into you like a warm blanket, things would be alright, wouldn't they?
-----
The news that the heir of Iyle had returned that night and in two days time there would be a banquet to welcome you. People flooded the city with the news, usually, the other Lords and Ladies from the other territories and sometimes the royalty of other countries would come to celebrate but everything was so last minute only a few from surrounding territories who could make it came. Much to your surprise, you were greeted by the people with nothing but warmth, even the other Lords and Ladies congratulated you with smiles. Everything seemed to pass in a rush of your crash courses in governing from Lord Cha and his advisors which were pretty straight forward due to the amount of time you had previously spent with royals who never stopped talking about politics. You were bombarded with letters from every royal, lord, lady, baron, and Duchess on the continent as well as some who weren’t giving you their best regards and wishes for the future. You even saw one marked with the royal seal of Oclaria which you immediately shoved to the back of the drawer. But what really put into perspective of how much of a powerhouse on the continent Iyle was the news Lord Cha gave you in the meeting with your advisors a week after you coronation of sorts.
“The Prince of Edesea is coming to visit for the Final Blossom festival and he’s arriving this afternoon?!” You exclaimed.
“Yes,” Lord Cha sighed, “We just received word their delegation crossed the border this morning and they should be here by nightfall.”
“You mean the Prince of Edesea as in Kim Minseok?” you asked, utterly dumbfounded. You hadn’t seen Minseok in months and now you were going to see him tonight? You had spent the last week helping to finalize the details of the Final Blossom festival in the capital and now you had to quickly organize for a visit from Edesea and one of your closest friends who knew nothing about what happened to you in the last few weeks.
“Do you know Prince Minseok?” One of your advisors asked.
You nodded, “I do but he knows nothing about me leaving the capital of Oclaria, much less being the Lady of Iyle.”
You dismissed the meeting and quickly began planning for their visit and had the maids prepare quarters for the extra guests in the east wing which were supposed to be rooms for the governing family but weren’t in use since it was only you. Before you knew it evening had rolled around and you were standing at the dock with Lord Cha and a handful of guards as the boat carrying Minseok and his staff docked. You shifted from foot to foot as you watched people start to disembark and then you saw him surrounded by guards approaching where you were waiting, his eyes scanning the crowd and he stopped when they landed on you.
“Y/n? What are you doing here?” He blurted out absolutely puzzled.
Lord Cha cleared his throat and stepped forward, “Your Highness, this is Lady Y/n, the ruler of Iyle.”
You stayed silent as his eyes widened with realization and he immediately bowed, “I apologize for my behaviour, It’s a pleasure to meet you Lady Y/n,” he said stiffly.
“Likewise, Your Highness,” you replied as you did your best to curtsy. You saw him purse his lips to suppress a chuckle as you wobbled coming back to a standing position, “It’s an honour to have you visit for one of our most important holidays, the news was a little bit last minute so I hope you find your accommodations suitable, Shall we head to the castle? I’m sure you’re all tired from your journey,” you said with a smile.
“Lead the way,” he answered with a knowing smile as you stepped into the carriage with him and headed to the palace. Once the door was shut he turned back to you, “You can drop the formalities, we’re friends first and foremost.”
“I missed you so much Minseok,” you exclaimed, doing your best to hug him in the tight space, “It feels like its been years since I last saw you.”
“Me too,” he agreed, “And it seems like we have a lot to talk about,” he said, eyes drifting to the dress made in the style of most Iylian summer dresses which had short sleeves and scooping necklines and backs to combat the heat while still keeping your legs and torso covered.
The heat rose to your cheeks as you teasingly punched him, “Shut up, I heard in Edesea the women wear even smaller dresses.”
“They do,” he chuckled, “But you look good, not just your dress but you look happier Lady Y/n.”
“I guess I have to explain some things.”
“It can wait till morning,” he assured you, “I’m sure we’re both exhausted.”
You bid him goodnight as you entered your room and he entered his own, your maid whose name you learned was Shinhye was waiting to help you get ready for bed. It was always odd to think that just months ago you were in her position, helping Jiyoon get ready for the day and you were always reminded how much you missed your friends back in Arye.
-----
The next morning you met Minseok in the Library in the east wing and explained everything to him, even what happened with Sehun in the royal palace.
“I’ll kill him,” he seethed.
“Please don’t,” you sighed, “It’s just as much my fault as it is his, just don’t tell the others,” You could see that he didn’t believe you one bit but thankfully he dropped it.
“It actually explains a lot,” he told you before pulling out a stack of envelopes tied together, “A few weeks ago your friends from Arye sent these for you to the capital of Oclaria but Sehun immediately sent them back without any explanation. Junmyeon knew he wasn’t going to get anything out of his brother so when he heard I was going to visit the capitol after I visit IYle he asked me to give these to you, we thought you died or something.”
Tears pricked your eyes as you saw letters from Jiyoon, Mari, Konu, Seon, and Kosho, “Thank you,” you choked out, doing your best not to ruin the makeup Shinhye had done for you this morning.
“I’m just happy you’re okay,” Minseok sighed as he squeezed your hand, “Now how about you show me around your hometown?”
The Final Blossom Festival went off without a hitch. You introduced Minseok to Kun, Junseo, Eizo, Fen, and Jungwon, who were still awestruck that you were the Lady of Iyle and friends with the prince of Edesea. The feast and ball were amazing, filled with laughter and dancing and delicious fruits. The dress you had been given was decorated with wreaths of flowers you were gifted by the attendees, Minseok was especially popular with the ladies, always having a partner to dance with as you indulged the boys in they’re bet and danced with each one, in turn, leaving each with a kiss on the cheek except Kun who declined almost immediately which made you all laugh.
“Don’t let any of the Lord’s son’s see you kissing those boys or their heads might explode with jealousy, after all its not so often the Lady in charge of the most powerful territory in Oclaria is young, single, and pretty,” Minseok teased and you halfheartedly shoved him away. As much as Lord Cha assured you that you wouldn’t have to marry any time soon, you were familiar with this are of politics, and you knew eventually it might be necessary for you to solidify your standing. You didn’t let it cloud your thoughts because sure enough you were pulled onto the dance floor again. You wanted to live in the bliss of the festival for another few days but sure enough, that wouldn’t be the case as the next morning Lord Cha met you with an urgent letter, decorated with the royal crest.
----
Lady of Iyle,
I wish to formally invite you to the Royal Palace to celebrate the beginning of summer. As the newly appointed leader of one of the most powerful territories in our country we regret that we were unable to attend the celebration but we hope you will be able to celebrate with us in two weeks time.
His Majesty, The King of Oclaria, Sehun

“Well Minseok,” you sighed sitting down next to him in your dining room where you had been sharing breakfast before you were pulled away, “We won’t be parting ways anytime soon, The king has invited me to the royal palace for the beginning of summer festivities.”
“Oh Y/n….”
“I have to face him at some point, I can’t just hide here on this island.”
“I didn’t tell you earlier…” he said quietly, “But the rumour is that his officials are pushing him to marry and he’s going to announce his engagement during the last day of festivities, during the ball.”
You bristled and tried to swallow the lump in your throat, “I see, so everyone will be there?” he nodded, “I’m happy for him.”
