At the very least he witnessed everything. At least everything Spoke went through.
It tore him up every single day to not go back. But it was worse to watch Spoke spiral down and down and down. Slowly getting worse and worse. So caught up in his web of lies he himself could no longer tell it from the truth.
Do you think he blames himself for what Spoke becomes? Everything, everything that happens from that first week on. Is all because of those exploits.
The orbital cannon war was because of the exploits. The Zam vs Spoke war, was because of the exploits. The disc quest was because of the exploits. Parrot's actions are what drove Jamato away (in Spoke's eyes). The mafia only existed the way it did BECAUSE ASH WANTED THOSE EXPLOITS.
The entire story started because Jamato showed Spoke that bunker.
Do you think he feels the weight of that?
So even if he isn't the literal god of this universe, everything that happened leads back to him. This is the story he created inadvertently. This is his Frankenstein's monster.
And "killing" Mapicc was his final attempt at destroying the monster he created. But it's too late for that now.
Spoke has dug himself too deep. And now all Jamato can do is watch.
