Hey howdy! I'm a really big fan of your art. Everything from your silly little scribbles to Runewriters and everything in between. And I've noticed that you seem to draw a lot of tentacles. Like, a LOT. And they look really nice and fun to draw, so I was wondering if you'd ever consider doing a quick "this is how I draw tentacles" thing? You don't have to, I just thought it would be really fun to learn how to draw a great big tentacle monster. :)
Aw, shoot, thank you Anon! I –
LOL ANON IM SURE THIS ISNT WHAT YOU MEANT BUT THIS MAKES ME SOUND A LITTLE WEIRD
OKAY but tentacles, like, basically the way I figured out how to draw the style I use for facestealers (and Sev) was just:
(ironically, octopuses don’t have tentacles, ACTUAL TENTACLES are the things squids have, but when we think of lovecraftian tentacles we tend to picture octopus arms so that’s what I go with for facestealers!)
The main thing that I think helped mine look nice and less like weird squiggly seaweed is that they need to be drawn as though they have volume, like, there’s muscles inside.
I draw mine so you can see a lot of the planes of the shape (which is why you get those ridges on the “edges”) – which takes a lot more cues from big snakes, actually – but you can also round them out and get good results as long as they’ve still got a feeling of volume, like it’s a solid form. Also, giving the suckers that actual cylinder shape (instead of just being weird flat circles on the underside of the tentacle) goes a long way towards making them feel more real.
IDK IF THAT’S HELPFUL OR NOT but that’s the basics of what I think about when I’m drawin’ ‘em! :D
