“Sam, pull over,” You could feel your stomach rolling with every turn of the steering wheel.
“Why? What’s wrong?” Sam glanced at you from the corner of his eye, hands already tugging the car to the side of the road.
“I’m going to be sick,” You just barely got out of the car before you ruined the upholstery. Putting the car in park, Sam jumped out of the driver’s seat and made his way around to where you stood next to the grassy field, hands on your knees. Nothing was coming up, but the nausea still made your head spin.
“Are you okay?” He gently pat your back, rubbing soothing circles between your shoulder blades. “Was it the fast food that we stopped for a little while back? Y’know, I thought that sandwich smelled a bit off.”
“It’s not the sandwich, Sam,” You kept taking deep breaths in through your nose, out through your mouth. With every fresh gulp of air, the toiling in your stomach calmed down.
“Then what is it?” Sam grabbed his water bottle from the car, unscrewing the cap before handing it to you. You graciously took it from your boyfriend, sipping on the cool water.
“Well...” You trailed off, taking another drink. What were you supposed to say? That you were scared stiff at the very thought of meeting the Avengers? That you were sure they would all hate you and want you to leave your boyfriend of 7 months? Tell you that you weren’t good enough for their close friend and ally?
“You can tell me anything, Babe,” Sam’s warm brown eyes met yours. That look, along with the water and fresh air put an end to your nausea. Nodding, you made your way back to the car so that you could sit down in the air conditioning. Sam followed behind you, shutting his door shut before turning towards you. “Now, what’s got my Babygirl’s stomach all upset?”
You had to tell him, no matter how embarrassing it was. “What if they don’t like me, Sam?”
“Who?” His eyebrow raised in question.
You rolled your eyes. “The Avengers, Sam. I’m going to meet them today and they are probably going to hate me.”
“Baby, no one could ever hate you,” He tucked a stray piece of hair behind your ear. “Why are you so worried about this? They are going to love you.”
“But what if they don’t, Sam?” You questioned, the nausea returning. “What if they don’t think I’m good enough for you? They are practically your family. I’m not going to ask that you choose me over your family.”
“Whoah, calm down, okay?” He cupped your cheek in his hand. “You are worrying over nothing. They will absolutely love you, and you are absolutely way too good for me. Honestly, I don’t even know if I deserve you.”
You could feel your head shaking in disagreement. “You are perfect for me. Don’t say that.”
“See?” Sam gave you a small grin. “That’s exactly how I feel about you. You are perfect for me. Besides, it’s silly for you to worry about these things. They may be my family, but you’re my family now, too.”
Sam’s kind words drove home, and the nausea was soon replaced with butterflies at the thought of you and Sam being a family. “Really?”
“Absolutely,” Sam leaned over the center console and placed a kiss on your forehead. “Let’s get back to driving. We don’t want to be late.”
“Okay,” You sighed, buckling your seatbelt. The rest of the drive to the Avengers compound went by fast, a little too fast for your liking. While Sam’s words and gentle squeezes of your hand helped to calm down your nerves, they never fully went away. By the time that the compound came into view, you thought you were going to be sick all over again.
“Just breathe, (Y/N),” Sam smiled at you, turning the car off. “They are going to love you.”
“Sam?” You felt like your knees were going to give out as the building loomed in front of you. “Don’t let go of me, okay? I’m afraid I am going to fall if you do.”
“I’ve got you, Babygirl,” Sam’s fingers intertwined with yours as the two of you made your way towards the door. “I’ll always be right here.”
The foyer of the compound was sleek and clean. Windows were everywhere, bringing in the bright sunlight from outside. Sam led you through the compound, passing the gym, laboratory, and kitchen before the two of you entered the living room where the team waited. Just before you walked in, Sam pressed a loving kiss on your hairline, right beside your ear, whispering “They will love you, just as much as I do.”
That little reassurance from him is what propelled you through the entryway into the living room. The team lounged on various furniture strewn throughout the room. Natasha, Tony, and Bruce sat on the long black couch, flipping through various television channels. Wanda had her feet tucked under her on the floor, leaning against the recliner where Vision sat playing with her hair. Clint leaned against the floor to ceiling length windows, watching the birds fly through the air. Steve and Bucky were the first to greet you, seeing as they were the closest to the entryway and because they were the closest to Sam.
“(Y/N), I want you to meet Steve. He’s the one that got me into the Avengers, as you know,” Sam introduced you to Steve, keeping a hold on your hand the entire time.
“It’s so nice to meet you, (Y/N),” Steve extended his hand for you to shake. Your hand seemed so small compared to his that enveloped yours. “We’ve been dying to meet you.”
“Thank you,” You could feel the small smile that graced your lips. “It’s an honor meeting Sam’s ‘work-family.’”
The team chuckled at the terminology that you used. In all honesty, they were much more than just a work-family. Any group this tight-knit was bound to view each other as a brother or sister. Sam’s smile only grew as he introduced you to everyone around the room.
“Breaking out the spring colors, are we, Buck?” Sam joked, circling his arm around your waist as he introduced you to the man in all dark grey.
Bucky scowled at Sam before turning to you. His scowl was replaced with a small smile at the sight of you. “Nice to meet you, (Y/N). Though, I feel as if I already know you since Sam doesn’t ever shut up about you.”
“Er-thanks?” You chuckled at the death-glare Sam was giving Bucky. You made your way around the room, Sam introducing you to each Avenger. They all were very kind and welcoming to you, which relieved some of the stress you felt. Nat even hugged you.
“Welcome to the family, (Y/N),” She said before enveloping you in a tight hug.
The rest of the evening went rather smoothly as the team got to know you personally. Asking where you were from, what you did for a living, what’s your favorite band, and a million other questions that spanned through the night. By the time that 10 o’clock struck, the team was starting to break out the bottles of liquor to start up some party game that Tony had invented.
“I think (Y/N) and I are gonna turn in, actually,” Sam interjected before Tony could pour the two of you a shot. “What with driving all day, we are both pretty tired.”
“Boo,” Tony pouted, pouring a shot for you anyways before drinking it himself. “Well, if you change your mind, we all will be here.”
“Don’t have too much fun, now,” Nat smirked, taking a swig from the bottle that Clint and her were sharing.
Sam just waved her off before pulling you to your feet and leading you to his room in the compound. Just like his apartment back in D.C., Sam’s room was sprinkled with bits of his personality. A stray leather jacket here, a pair of jogging shoes there. The room even smelled just like it did back home. Whatever nerves you had left over from the day disappeared at the comforting scent of Sam. The two of you quickly changed into your pajamas before collapsing onto the bed. You were exhausted.
“Today wasn’t so bad, was it?” Sam pulled back the sheets and climbed in. He opened his arms up for you to snuggle into his chest, just like you did every night back home. You gladly accepted the offer.
“No, it was actually a good day,” You nuzzled your nose into the soft cotton t-shirt that Sam wore. “Guess I was worried for nothing.”
“I told you, Babygirl,” Sam chuckled. Looking down at you, Sam could see the sleep in your eyes and how exhausted you were. “You know I love you, right?”
“No, I actually forgot,” You hummed in content. “Remind me?”
Sam grinned in the dark as he leaned down to capture your lips. The kiss was soft and sweet. It reminded you of home. “I love you, (Y/N).”
“I love you too, Sam,” You barely got out the words before your eyes fluttered shut, content with the little family that was made up of you and Sam.
