🎉 WE FOUND MY DAD’S FUCK! 🎉

so my dad is a (retired) audio engineer, and his studio does automated dialogue replacement (ADR). Its for when you’ve filmed a scene with an actor and the shoot has already wrapped, but you realize during editing that some of the lines are obscured by background noise and it’s too late to do another take because everyone’s already gone home. What happens then is that the actor, a recording studio near where the actor lives, the director(s), and a different recording studio near where the director(s) live share a very special four-way audiovisual hug so the actor can lip-sync over their own lines and make sure the dialogue is clear.

My dad remembered that he had done an ADR session for The Wire but couldn’t remember which episode or season it was in— it’s this one! S4E4! It’s when the security guard exits the store and says “the fuck?” They didn’t get that “the fuck?” on mic, so the actor who plays the security guard (he lives in our state!) had to come in to my dad’s studio to re-record himself saying “the fuck?” to the director’s satisfaction. That was the entire script for the ADR session: the fuck?, and only the fuck?. My dad says everybody got a kick out of that.
