I thought I’d add my “YOU” Trailer that I made a while back. I started work on this way before Season 4 was announced.

Are there any vidding/editing forums left anywhere?

Few years back there were still forums where fan vidders/editors could gather and talk about everything and anything from the creative process of making videos to the technical nitty gritty. Now all of those forums seem to be dead with no activity. 

I love reading about people’s creative processes so I miss sites like those. Even when - or especially when - their vidding process can be so different from mine. I found it very inspiring and often times useful in my own vidding. 

The technical side has changed too, which is where I need some practical advice from fellow editors. I’ve noticed how much harder it is to find a) secure download sites for the source material, and b) download files that AREN’T in .mkv form. (My antiquated Vegas Pro 11.0 doesn’t know how to handle those files, and converting the files to other forms makes them lose the HD quality.) Sure, there’s always YouTube, but not everything is on it, and it’s very clip based.

Is there a place on Tumblr or anywhere on the Internet, where people talk about vidding/editing anymore, or is it more individual blogs and YouTubers who talk about these things? Could you recommend any?

My next fan editing project is going to be an attempt at Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla, which I was hoping to start today but naturally, nothing went to plan and I probably won’t be able to work on it now until next week at the earliest.  T_T

That said, my thoughts going into this fan edit are different than those going into GFW.  More below the split...

Godzilla Final Wars is a movie that, even in the theatrical cut, I found a lot of fun.  It’s got a ton of action, and yeah it can wibble-wobble between being really goofy and really blatant in its homages to early ‘00s Hollywood, but you can see what Kitamura and the crew were going for.  My biggest belief going into it was the issue was that the movie had too much and needed pruning to improve the pacing, which I’m happy those of you who’ve watched and shared your thoughts say I‘ve mostly accomplished.  ^_^

Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla, on the other hand, is a movie with much deeper issues IMO.  Pacing is a problem here too, but atop of that the script is a mess.  Godzilla Final Wars isn’t a confusing film and isn’t hard to follow.  While there are plotlines and characters that ultimately don’t mean much, there’s not really anything that gets introduced and then dropped.  It’s not the world’s greatest script, but it’s well-written for what it is.

GvSG is kinda notorious for how terribly written it is and how much of a mess its plot is.  It feels so much like an attempt to combine three incomplete scripts, and one that doesn’t really pan out in the end.

I rewatched GvSG a couple of years ago for the first time in many years, and after that viewing walked away convinced the movie was an unsalvagable mess.  But after a day of thinking it over, I became convinced that the makings of a better movie are in there.  I enjoyed this movie as a kid, not as much as other Heisei films but well enough.  I don’t remember it being as jumbled or SLOW as it now feels, but I think a more focused and faster film can be constructed through some creative editing.  ^_^

I’m looking forward to this project!  I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.  I have ideas for some really dramatic changes, first and foremost being a whole new opening sequence:  a flashback to Godzilla’s attack on Osaka in Godzilla vs. Biollante.  I’ve not had a chance to look at the audio mix for Biollante yet, but my hope is that it’ll be possible to strip out the music (and I should point out I love GvB’s score) so I can try replacing it with tracks from GvSG’s score.

The reason for that change would be two-fold.  Firstly, to give the movie a more exciting opening sequence, and secondly to make the connection to GvB a little more explicit as so much of what’s going on with the character drama in the movie goes back to this specific sequence in GvB.

The more obvious change is to cut the Yakuza subplot, which sounds difficult but I have a bunch of ideas and I think is technically possible.  It helps that the theatrical cut is 108 minutes and I’m planning to insert footage from GvB, as I’ve a feeling cutting that subplot might actually bring the movie under 90 minutes without the extra footage (I’d rather not make it THAT short).

Outside of that, the rest of the movie is going to be reorganized - I’m going to try pushing all the Space Godzilla stuff into the latter two-thirds of the movie.  My hope is if I do that, the movie will feel less jumbled and a lot more focused.
