Hottest takes on the fandom dividers - Nesta, Elain, Lucien, Tamlin?
Alright— *cracks nuckles*— let’s do this.
—Nesta
She’s one of the most flawed characters in this series, and it seems that the narrative mostly nags on her for a lot of things, even for things she’s actually right about. People are in their right to dislike her, even hate her. Although I love her, I obviously do not see her as innocent. She’s messy and mean. There are times in which she‘s certainly unbearable and people have the right to criticize her. However, there are also times in which their hatred is very uncalled for and borders misogyny instead. I blame so called feminist Sjm for it. For example, Nesta was polite during the winter solstice in acofas and she had every right to snap at Cassian after he followed her outside in the dark even when she repeatedly turned him down. Nesta had every right to prioritize her safety over Cassian’s pride— why are we blaming this woman for not wanting to wiggle her feet in front of scary men who already accused her of witchcraft? She trained willingly with other girls in private, so the fault lies with him for making her feel unsafe. And Mor can eat dirt. Hate Nesta all you like, but those moments reek of misogyny.
—Elain
I can’t stand the fandom‘s version of Elain, especially among Eluciens and Elriels, as they coddle her too much and put her above every other character. I love an imperfect Elain. By that I mean someone Opportunistic: she takes opportunities when it suits her and avoids accountability. We see this in how she acts around her sisters and clings to Azriel while avoiding Lucien and the bond at all costs. That depth is rarely explored, and yet many Elain stans call it ‘anti-Elain‘. I‘d argue that the perfect, most kind, most powerful, the only feminine, innocent girl reeks of anti Elain cause that version of her has no flaws. I like that she’s rather nice than kind- in fact I love it!! It’s the fandom that makes her so boring and cringy to me.
—Lucien
I love Lucien. I think that while there was a clear power balance between him and Tamlin, there were definitely times he could’ve been a better friend to Feyre. For example, when he visibly sees that Feyre isn’t well but doesn’t check in, just watches her miserably prepare for the wedding. I want to explore this dilemma in my remake because I do not do favoritism nor character assassination— doesn’t matter wether I love or hate a character. I believe that both antis and pros can be hypocrites. When speaking of Lucien‘s action, they often ignore that the same points could apply to other characters they love or hate. Same goes for Nesta
—Tamlin
I‘ve already explained what I think of him in my other post solely about Tamlin. My takeaway Is that Tamlin doesn’t need to be terrible in every way possible. He doesn’t need to be weaker than the main characters, he doesn’t need to be patriarchal to be abusive, and he isn’t a clown for playing an instrument like the fandom mocks him for. He also isn’t wrong when he says High Ladies don’t exist or when he hesitates to act or not doing anything Utm (because wasn’t it mentioned that if he so much as moved, Feyre would be in far greater danger?)
Well, let’s hope my address won’t be leaked.
