Find a show, find a book, find a character I like
Tell myself, “Be chill, don’t overthink tonight”
Just a story, just a plot, just some lines on a screen
But my brain starts digging like a crime scene
Childhood moments, every word that they said
Little fractures in the back of their head
Every scar starts linking up in a chain
Every choice just echoing pain
Now I’m three hours deep in a spiral again
Drawing maps of the ghosts in their head
Every villain just a kid who got hurt
Every hero just surviving the wreck
I said I’d be normal about this
Just watch and enjoy the show
But now I’m tracing every heartbreak
From years they’ll never outgrow
No saints and no real monsters
Just people trying to survive
Of things that kept them alive
And yeah, I’m taking psychic damage
From stories that aren’t even mine
But I keep digging through the rubble
Looking for the reason why
Now the lines start blurring between right and wrong
Every motive tangled up in a song
Every anger just a shield they create
Every love just arriving too late
If you follow every step that they made
You can see where the fractures were laid
Every choice that they thought was their own
Just a ghost of a wound they’ve outgrown
And the more that I look the more I can see
All the pain in the way that they breathe
All the silence between what they say
And the damage that won’t go away
I said I’d be normal about this
Just watch and enjoy the show
But now I’m tracing every heartbreak
From years they’ll never outgrow
No saints and no real monsters
Just people trying to survive
Of things that kept them alive
And yeah, I’m taking psychic damage
From stories that aren’t even mine
But I keep digging through the rubble
Looking for the reason why
Maybe we’re all like that too
Just walking around in the fallout
Trying to rewrite the past
But the echoes keep getting too loud
Maybe the villains and heroes
Are just different shades of the same
People surviving disasters
And learning to live with the pain
I tried to be normal about it
Just watch and enjoy the show
But now I see every fracture
In places they’ll never let go
No saints and no real monsters
Just hearts learning how to survive
Of stories that keep them alive
And yeah, I’m taking psychic damage
But maybe that’s part of the art
Looking through fictional tragedies
And recognizing the heart.
