[Sweet Disposition- The Temper Trap
He hadn’t meant to see her like that. Yet, it always seemed to happen to him. Every time he saw her, part of his heart chipped away. It was a dark, cloudy night when it happened. Lately, he had found himself having trouble sleeping. He would walk around, trying to lull his mind back to respite. That particular night was different somehow, it was hard to explain why. Maybe it was the deep chill that had settled in the abandoned halls of the building, or perhaps it was the faint glow of the moonless sky, casting only a faint glow on his surroundings. Whatever it was, maybe it’s what made him follow the stranger he saw, ducking down another hallway. Normally, he would’ve just ignored it. Whoever they were, they were out for their own business, he had no room to stick his nose in. Yet, this time, he found himself wandering after her. Through the hall, he would only catch a glance before she turned another corner, went through another door. Faintly he wondered why he was doing such a strange thing as he found himself at the foot of the stairs to the roof. Her soft footsteps could barely be heard as she made her way to the roof. In contrast, his steps seemed much deeper, having an echo as he climbed each step. He found himself hesitating as he heard the door the the rooftop open, then shut just as suddenly. Standing frozen a flight below, Ebony found his heart in his throat. Why was he so nervous? His heart fluttered, a strange sense of nostalgia settled on his shoulders as he found himself racing up those last few stairs, racing towards that lone door. She was standing on the opposite end of the roof as he pushed open the door. Her white nightgown fluttered in the icy wind, which took Ebony’s breath away. How could she stand wearing such thin pajamas on such a cold night? It wasn’t until she turned slightly that he realized who she actually was. If Janie was surprised to see him there, she didn’t show it. No, in fact, it was like he wasn’t there at all. All her emotion was shown on her face, her heart exposed as tears ran down her cheeks. Ebony stopped breathing as he watched her, her dark brown hair curling back in view as she turned back away. "It always seems to be you." She laughed richly, not a trace of sorrow to be heard in her voice at all. Nervously, the boy gulped as he took a step forwards towards her. The same threat that always loomed around her seemed to be gone, but something still made him hang back. Confusion, and a strange fluttery feeling kept welling up inside of him as he joined her, side by side, overlooking the countryside surrounding the school. Building up the courage, he glanced away from the scenary to glance back at the crying girl. Her expression remained the same, tears flowing down, but it wasn’t despair she was reflecting. A resignated smile had curled up on her lips, bitter sweet, yet, hopeful. He wasn’t sure what to do, what to say. The tears kept flowing down as she turned her gaze to meet his, her smile growing. "So… How much did you see?"
The wind continued battering them. He wasn’t sure how she remained so poised, her gaze never lowered, nor did she ever shiver. Whatever was going through her mind, it never scratched her dignity. For a moment, at least, a second, The ice queen wasn’t made of ice. She was a warm-hearted person, stoic, yet, beautiful.
Ebony awoke the next morning, dazed. He had slept through his alarm again, and his pajamas were cold. For a brief second, he recalled some sort of strange scene. Janie, smiling up through bitter tears, leaning up on tip toe and kissing his cheek. “I don’t mind if it’s you who sees.” Was her parting words. But… nah, it was only a dream. Probably. Yet, part of him wanted it not to be.
