Behold... Ford Farquad.
Waltz
In Shrek the Musical Farquad talks about his parents being Grumpy the dwarf and the princess from princess and the pea. But he says he never knew his mom and "she could've been a queen"
Princess and the pea is about trying to figure out if a girl actually is a princess or not.
Maybe Farquad's mom wasn't actually a princess because he says she rolled over- presumably in her sleep- one night- meaning she slept on the 25 mattresses previously with out problem- so she wasn't as sensitive as an actually princess would've been.
Despite Farquad's claims in the musical he has no royal blood.
Hot take for today
Lord farquad isnโt as bad as the films forced perspective makes him out to be
Letโs discuss
The first thing that happens by the order of lord farquad is the relocation of fairy tale creatures. The fairy tale creatures are likely living rent free on land that is legally owned by lord farquad and before forcibly relocating the fairy tale folk he โsigned an eviction noticeโ (as stated by one of the three pigs) meaning he had to have given them time to relocate to somewhere outside of the land that legally belongs to him. The fairy tale creatures likely ignored this notice and were then forcibly removed.
This next point isnโt about farquad directly but more about the human characters (aside from Fiona) in general in which farquad is included,
The treatment of ogres
Shrek makes it out to seem like ogres are heavily misunderstood creatures that no one takes the time to understand before casting their judgement but there are a couple things that happen before that which justifies the way the towns people feel about ogres, namely eating humans and taking pleasure in scaring the shit out of them if they ever were to approach. Eating humans is not a stereotype that the people have cast on to shrek either in fact heโs confirmed himself that heโs done it โnow ogres, theyโre much worse, theyโll make a suit from your freshly peeled skin, theyโll shave your liver, squeeze the jelly from your eyes...โ he pauses โactually itโs quite good on toastโ this isnโt just shrek playing on ogre stereotypes either as later we see him enjoy a martini that has an eyeball in it. Going back to the taking pleasure in scaring the shit out of townspeople and essentially psychologically torturing them, we see him laugh after he says โthis is the part where you run awayโ and we know this is isnโt just shrek taking joy out of chasing people off his land as in shrek 4 when he gets his wish we see him actively go into a village that is clearly not his land and start fucking shit up for the people that live there and he takes joy in that because to him itโs something that just โmakes senseโ
Now back to discussing farquad,
We know that lord farquad takes good care of the people who live in duloc, they are by no means oppressed as there isnโt any evidence of farquad oppressing them other than telling his knights that โsome of them may die but thatโs a risk heโs willing to takeโ Iโd argue that this isnโt necessarily oppression within the context of the time and setting the film takes place in as the knights had to have signed on for their position and therefore had to know what they were getting themselves into. My evidence that their signing on must have had to be by choice is that in later films we see jobs are plentiful and even in kingdom settings the people seem to have a choice in what they do for work. The people within duloc do not seem to be impoverished in fact the kingdom itself is a tourist attraction meaning theyโre also welcome to visitors and anyone can come and go to duloc and he even makes sure that everyone is clean and healthy especially during a time where there werenโt a lot of tools available to people to hygienically take care of themselves.
We also know that farquad is open and honest about his intentions and keeps his end of the deal, he gives shrek back his swamp back without the fairy tale creatures there and we know the fairy tale creatures are unharmed because they happily come and visit shrek and donโt show any signs of being upset about being relocated again.
The marriage between Fiona and lord farquad
There was no ill intent on farquad making Fiona his bride although his initial and arguably main intent on doing so was to legitimize his โkingdomโ and properly go through the channels so that his people could have a king and a queen. Fiona doesnโt seem to have any reservations about this initially either when shrek explains the situation to her and there are only reservations about it afterward when shrek and Fiona develop feelings for each other
Picture this: youโre the ruler of a land and the people are happy with you as their ruler, you take good care of them and ultimately everything is going well, an ogre shows up who is legitimately a monster known for eating your people and taking joy out of making them miserable and you see this as an opportunity to not expend the knights who you were risking losing, he brings you your bride, you clear out his land as promised and then he shows up at your wedding to steal the woman you have grown to fall for despite your initial intentions (you even sped up when the wedding was to happen and made things work the way your bride wanted it to work) and then out of nowhere that ogre comes back to try and take her back and then SHE turns into an ogre, something you werenโt aware of, now there are two ogres IN YOUR CHURCH where a ton of your people are now potentially in a lot of danger and not only that but now youโre losing your title as king because youโre loosing the princess and youโre risking being a failure to your people when you prided yourself on perfection.
Even more evidence, farquad says to gingy โIโve tried to be fair to you creaturesโ (which he has) โbut now my patience has reached its endโ which makes sense because they continue to defy him despite him being generous and fair to them. Even in this scene he does threaten to torture the ginger bread man to get information but doesnโt go through with it and has never actually physically harmed these creatures heโs been fair to.
In conclusion Shrek takes on a forced perspective from the ogres point of view which is why we see farquad as evil but if you objectively look at whatโs happening we see farquad is actually a fair and just ruler who wants the best for his kingdom and had it ruined and stolen from him by and ogre and then was murdered by a dragon
