Police take fiscal oxygen out of the room, away from actual social support programs. The money spent on policing could go to housing, nutritional services, healthcare, civil rights, building inspections, labor rights enforcement, street maintenance, public transportation. But it goes to paying guys to sit around idling Ford Explorers all day and hitting poor people with sticks.

also let’s remember that cops are literally always in the process of “creating crime.” They get to choose how laws are enforced, and when the narrative is that poor and marginalized people are the ones “doin the crime,” cops will find crime in the most fucked up socially acceptable Rorschach Test of all time. Like yes, let’s put more money into taking care of people and we’ll see crime drop, and we will also see it drop because there’s less assholes looking for confirmation of and enforcing their biases.

holy shit okay may have found a game-changer for web searches...with duckduckgo it's easy to turn off the ai features permanently, but regardless of engine there's the increasing problem of the search results themselves leading mostly to ai-generated articles on random ghost websites that say a lot without any information, and then the information they do give is contradictory or otherwise just wrong. this is especially a problem for me when trying to search for, e.g., a current list of the best products in a certain category.

finally searched for a solution and there IS in fact a giant hand-curated list of sites containing this content. it can be imported to ublock origin on desktop or mobile, and even can be used on iOS via the ublacklist extension in the safari app. it's updated regularly, and importing via the link as described should allow those updates to go into effect automatically.

i've only tested it a little bit, but after importing the list and repeating my duckduckgo search for backpack recommendations, my top results now lead to websites that appear to be linked to actual organizations in some form, with an "about us" page and the name of a founder and everything. the text is still often a bit wordy and SEO-optimized, but it now has actual recommendations that are relevant to the query. BIG IF TRUE???

along the same line, we’re seeing more platforms censoring *drawn* nipples. Like classic works of art that you could just go and see at an art museum.

I’ve had sketches get censored on this platform that suggest a boob and a femme form, and literally the next page down is the chest of a guy, way more detailed, and that’s fine.

I also got yelled at for wearing a mid drift to work (which was very nice it was just short), as this wasn’t “business casual” and was deeply inappropriate. I got written up for this and talked down to by my boss, who loves to extol her progressive beliefs. All the while my male coworker was told his distressed zip up hoodie was fine when he asked about it.

Not to mention I spent the first large portion of my life never batting an eye at being top less and I remember the day when my boobs got big enough (like 2 mo in) to where I suddenly felt watched and observed and like I needed to cover up.

One thing that people forget about the civil rights movement, the Black Panther Party in particular, is that they were keenly aware of the aesthetics and public perception of their movements/actions, nearly every single thing they did was carefully coordinated to use these things to their advantage. They knew that white Americans would be viewing everything they did antagonistically, even their supposed white allies, which meant that demonstrators needed to be highly disciplined and trained in their responses. Especially in today's day and age where leftist movements (particularly white leftist movements) bicker about the "proper" way to advocate for their ideals, we often forget that the targeted audience for civil rights actions was extremely important to consider, especially when using one as an example to uplift or steer away from. Not every action should be seen as speaking to the public, many did and that changed how actions were planned and carried out, but some of the actions that folks now call "too extreme" or"undesirable" or "radical", weren't meant for the general public at all.

Some leaders chose to highlight the cruelty of their oppressors by remaining calm or peaceful when encountering abuse (like mentioned in the post about sit-ins), speaking directly to the audience of the general public, while others chose to highlight their strength and defense of their communities, speaking directly to those that wished them harm (like the BPP open carry demonstrations) or to communicate that support and defense to their own communities (like the famous BPP free breakfast program, or free sickle cell anemia testing programs).

When it comes to communication strategies and revolutionary advocacy, sometimes we need to humble ourselves when getting into the discourse weeds about "this won't bring people to our side", as sometimes those actions aren't meant to have that effect at all. Sometimes an action is meant to be off putting, not to the public, but to those who seek to harm marginalized people. Sometimes an action is meant to only benefit the communities being impacted. Not every action can be tailored to gaining public favor, because the general public isn't the only audience. We need to be able to communicate that we will defend our neighbors to those who wish them harm, we need to be able to communicate that we will support our neighbors to those who need that support. We need all forms of advocacy and actions, because movements are only effective when we have the ability to speak directly to every audience, which the civil rights movement lays out beautifully. Its not a "this way is the best way", its a "how can my chosen actions support those taking other kinds of actions?"

Every serious climate scientist agrees that there is no such as thing as too late, just as there is no such thing as too early. We should have done a lot more than we have to fight climate change, and the world will suffer for our inaction, but there is no point of no return. We can always work to reduce the amount of suffering that occurs, and eventually turn things around to the point where our planet is healing once again. Do not believe anyone who says it's "too late".
