Muscle vs. Fat What's the Difference? Weight is weight, right? Does what makes up the weight actually make a difference? Surely a pound of muscle is the same as a pound of fat, right? Well, it's not that simple. What makes up the weight you carry can have an impact on your health, appearance, physical abilities, and general well-being. Muscle and fat could not be more different in terms of both structure and role. Let's Talk About Muscle: Some muscles attach to your skeletal system. Others are key to the circulatory and digestive systems. Your heart is a muscle, and so is your bicep. Muscles are vital to the way your body runs! Muscles use up calories in order to function, and they generally use up more calories than fat does (1). According to a paper published in the Exercise and Sport Sciences Review, "exercise improves the capacity of muscle to oxidize fat (2). Since "reduced rates of fat oxidation [...] have been shown to predict weight gain (2), regular exercise can give muscles a boost in their fat oxidation, making it easier for you to control your weight. Muscle is also denser than fat, which means that a pound of it will take up less space than a pound of fat. This can impact your physical appearance. Let's Talk About Fat: Your body does need some fat, but it doesn't need a ton of it. Fat helps store energy, insulate organs, and can even help the messenger systems in your body function. It also stores some nutrients, like vitamins A, D, E, and K. Fat doesn't use up as many calores as muscle does. My friend Heidi posted this the other day and I thought it was such an important reminder. Also after day 32 of @80dayobsession Amber talks about how much your body changes when you stick to your meal plan and workout even if the scale doesn't budge. This is important to me because I have been plateaed for weeks but this weekend I felt so good in my clothes plus I measured myself and I'm down another 1/2 inch on my belly and 3 cm on my arms. Absolute truth right here. When it comes to fat vs muscle it always surprises me when people say muscle weighs more than fat. No. A pound is a pound. Period. One just takes up more space than the other. Remember, when it comes to fitness, the scale is NOTHING but a number. Every positive change counts! How/what you're eating matters as much as how many times a day you're eating. 6 small, healthy meals a day are better than 3 big, calorie laden ones. You're fueling your body with smaller, healthier, more frequent meals. Fueling your body regularly gives you more energy to do the things. Inches lost mean more than pounds lost. How your clothes fit means more than a number in the scale. Yet so many people adhere to the misnomer that it's the scale that matters most and they get discouraged when the scale only moves a couple notches, or not at all. Every. Positive. Change. Counts. Celebrate them! Celebrate the non scale victories! The looser fit of your clothing, shoes and rings. The drinking half your weight in water that day. The saying no to that 2nd serving or eating smaller portions. Everybody's got to start somewhere. The key is to START! Celebrate you getting off the couch and going to the gym, no matter what your size! You going at your own pace at the gym is vastly superior to sitting around at home. You getting out there and going slow is still you running laps around those who choose to sit on the couch in front of the TV. You choosing to be healthier is reason to celebrate right there!
