The Long Earth!

Is an interesting concept, but the series wasn’t actually written by Pterry and you can tell. Oy, you can tell. The Long Earth was pretty good, the Long War was... ok, a little trouble there, but the Long Mars was dull. So duuhhhhhlllll. Wow, did I speed through that one. I haven’t picked up the last two books in the series and I’m really not sure I want to. And that’s even after I picked up TLM for a couple dollars from an online used bookstore because TLW had not impressed me that much...

actually, I’ve always thought that some kind of biological dormancy would be a pretty plausible advance in biological engineering. There’s lots of vertebrates that have ways of doing it (though I’ve always liked the idea of estivation rather than cryogenics.) regardless, I’m curious why you disagree.

Dormancy is way different than completely freezing a large, endothermic living body that doesn’t have cellular mechanics set up to tolerate that. I admit I haven’t researched Avatar that hard so they might be using dormancy (which would basically be an induced coma for humans?) rather than turning them into meat popsicles, but they did refer to it as “Cryo“ in the scene where he wakes up so. Shrog. Maybe a colloquialism or something

Though I do think that Avatar dodges the other issue with cryogenics by having the people only under for 6 years or so, that issue being that naturally occurring radioactive molecules in the human body will wreck your flesh if you’re lying around frozen for a few hundred years and can’t heal the damage

in short it’s because they’re a prey animal and also VERY FAST

the two largest pairs of eyeballs on land belong to diurnal prey animals, the ostrich and the horse. having the largest possible eyes gives them better resolution images of their environment. this way they are more likely to be alerted to approaching predators, and less likely to crash into stuff while flying along at 40mph. The drawback of this is that their vision is so detailed they tend to get false positives of danger, which is why horses are notorious for “seeing ghosts” and getting very skittish and jumpy.

I doubt earth ponies and unicorns can reach speeds of 40mph, but they’re still very fast, and pegasi can break the sound barrier in canon, so, uh... not even 2 inch wide eyes will help you there lmao. Another factor in this is probably that neoteny is considered attractive (why the hell else would they be fetus horses really. its the reason humans have fetus ape faces)

@faustandluce HONESTLY, that boy recycles father figures like his rent depends on how many dads he turns in at the end of book. As if he needs more dads. I agree with you tho, he needs a mom. He’s been asking for a mom since book one. Basically every women (who isn’t Cat or Gilly) that he’s met so far wants to do things like hold his hand or ride his dick, but what homeboy really needs is a mom to tell him to clean his room and yell at him when one of his dads doesn’t want to discipline him. Oh, and show him some emotion that isn’t hiding behind being a rough and tumble grunt who needs manly posturing in order to tell Jon he loves him (without actually telling him he loves him-- grunt grunt here Jon have my priceless family sword no this doesn’t mean anything at all it’s just what I give everyone who saves my life).
