Shoujo, Josei, and the artists of Fire Emblem

I love Fire Emblem and I enjoy reading shoujo and josei manga. Which got me thinking, how many of FE's participating artists have work under the shoujo and/or josei demographic?

So I created this list. An long record of FE's artists that have either made or illustrated manga or light novels under the shoujo and/or josei label.

What's in this list? It includes;

Names of the artists and their contribution to the franchise

A few titles that they have worked on

An accompanying illustration from whatever they have worked on in the series

WARNING!! 

There are a few titles on this list that include sexual content and are labelled as [18+]. Please be cautious when looking up these titles. 

Since I made this list my myself, there's probably going to be some information I've missed or labelled incorrectly. If that's the case, please let me know! I'll try to fix it as soon as I can.

Now I can't include every artist on here, but I'd like to highlight some notable artists on the list.

From artists that contributed to FE's mainline games;

Naoko Kugo: Graphic Designer and (unofficial?) character illustrator for FE4, they illustrated for manga titles published in 2001 called Dreams, The Sorcerer’s Demonic Tale (夢々陰陽師鬼談) and Makai Tensei: Seija no Koushin (魔界転生: 聖者の行進) in 2003.

Okay rant time. I spent a good half an hour thinking, is Naoko Kugo the FE4 staff member the same as the illustrator Naoko Kugo? Because the artwork in FE4 compared to the manga I've listed don't look the same, right? I'm going to say, yes, they're the same person. There are two novels they've illustrated for released in 1996 (夜叉の恋路: 鏡花あやかし秘帖) and 1997 (鹿鳴館の魔女: 鏡花あやかし秘帖2) that look very similar to FE4's official artwork. I spent a good 20 minutes staring at those covers, but feel free to verify for yourselves. And on the front cover of Makai Tensei: Seija no Koushin, 'Naoko Kugo' appears very clearly behind the Japanese spelling of their name. Sorry, I needed to justify their inclusion so I don't feel like a crazy person about this. It doesn't help that there's so little information about them online.

Rika Suzuki: Well known FE artist with a very large portfolio within the franchise, has made a 26 volume manga call Tableau Gate in 2007. If an official release ever comes along, I'd love to read it as it sounds very interesting and I wouldn't say no to seeing more of Suzuki's gorgeous artwork :')

toi8: Character designer for TMS, has co-authored a manga called He Swore He'd Never Love Me. But Fell for My Disguise Instead! (「君を愛することはない」と言った氷の魔術師様の片思い相手が、変装した私だった) in 2024 has an official release in English. Was surprised to find out he only had one shoujo title he was involved with, I thought he did more.

Chinatsu Kurahana: Character designer for Three Houses, she created an original shoujo manga called Anima Arte in 2008. There isn't a lot of information regarding this manga, sadly.

HACCAN: A seasoned illustrator currently involved in FEH, was the illustrator for the light novel Lady Detective Alice and Young Butler Yukito's Case Files (お嬢様探偵ありすと少年執事ゆきとの事件簿) released in 2010 and was involved with the manga adaption released 2025. It doesn't have an official release yet, but I hope it will someday.

Heck, even some of the Fire Emblem manga were serialized in shoujo/josei magazines! These include:

Fire Emblem (1992), Fire Emblem Gaiden (1993) - Masaki Sano & Kyo Watanabe

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (1997) - Fujimori Nattsu

Fire Emblem Fates: Crown of Nibelung - Yugyoji Tama

Other artists worth highlighting;

Yumi Tamura: The reason I made this list in first place lol. I was so shocked to find out she had some sort of involvement in the series that it prompted me into reading Basara haha.

Yura Kairi: The character designer for the Angelique series up until Neo Angelique. It's notable for being the first otome game released. She's also the author for Saiunkoku Monogatari, which came as another surprise for me.

Tonami Minato: Heavily participated in FE's many comic anthologies from FE4 until Fates. I was surprised to see her be involved with the series for so long.

Mizuna Tomomi: This discovery is a little on the personal side because I remember reading The Big Adventures of Majoko back in elementary school lol. I was sad to find out the English release is out of print.

I hope this list brings intrigue to the many artists of the franchise that have been involved with the shoujo and josei demographic.

Side note: NEVER make me look at a table of contents EVER again!! Feels like I burned my eyeballs doing that haha

FE2, 8 Novelization Translations - Now in PDF Format!

I've had a volunteer assisting with a couple aspects of the FE novelizations recently, ShadowZant - as they read through each novel, they have been pointing out typos to me, cleaning up the artwork, and converting the text and art to PDF files! Thank you to ShadowZant!

I've fixed the typos in the Google Doc files for FE2, FE6, and FE8.

As for the PDFS, so far, there are PDFs for both FE8 books, and FE2 book 1. I have them saved in my public Google Drive folders for the novelization translations.

I've been getting some requests for EPUB files recently as well, and that is definitely on the to-be-accomplished list! If anyone can help with making EPUB files of a novelization or 2, it would be a huge help! I have a lot of translation requests that I am still focusing all of my attention on, and the FE1 novelization is turning out to be another book at a higher reading level like FE2 was.

Because Alm's birthmark is depicted on his hand in Echoes, at first, I instinctively translated the novel to match. ...However, Ozaki-sensei very clearly uses the word "arm" when describing its location on his body. And it didn't click that I was doing something wrong until I got to book 2, and there's a whole piece of art that was made to show exactly where it is on his arm.

One of the tricky parts of translation is to not let your brain turn on auto-fill!! You're never too good or experienced not to do it.

(I'm mostly making this post so I can remember later to go back and fix book 1's translation.)

...I also just learned that the localization translates aza to "Brand." That might be something I go back and change, too. I really should have read the localized Echoes script and taken detailed notes before I started translating the novel, lol.
