A picture of Jiang Cheng
Tell me, Jiang Cheng, what holding back your anger feels like. How the fire in your words consumes you like your mother’s wildfire charred your soul.
Tell me what looking for a love you never got is like. How you lift your chin high in absence of a father’s pride.
Did it hurt? Falling to your knees on the corpse of your home, empty and alone without your mother’s flames and screaming for a father that is no more?
Did you wail? Being the last of your name, raising the remains of your sister’s blood and grace?
*
You search, cursed soil under your fingernails and sharpened metal clutched to your chest.
You search, the last breath filling their lungs and that vermilion star on his forehead.
You search and lose yourself, brother, uncle, ashes on your tongue and an abyss in your core.
*
Tell me, Jiang Cheng, what being on your own feels like. How a lotus bloom flourished on the rotting carcass of your past.
Tell me what stumbling in the dark is like. How your sister’s blood will dry, how your brother’s flesh gave under your blade.
Does it hurt?
Do you wail?
Good.
If you cry like the child you never were, like the person you can never be, maybe then, you’ll get back your name;
uncle, brother, and something else.
