a/n: I love febuwhump and have participated before for other fandoms but this is a first for me — attempting to compete it via smau only. Hopefully I can write a complete story eventually and I will be posting it on its own masterlist in the correct order to read but it’ll be written based on the febuwhump prompt list! @febuwhump

Exhaustion

Warnings: magical exhaustion, blood, unconsciousness

"Whumpee, we need more. Give us more!" Teammate One shouted back at them.

Whumpee was so exhausted. They barely registered Teammate One's words. Though they were a siphon, essentially they were a magical battery for the rest of the team. They had near limitless energy. But even they would reach a limit after a long battle.

"Whumpee's exhausted, are you sure?" Caretaker called up to Teammate One.

"Yes! The shields are failing. We need just one last push. You can do it, Whumpee!"

"Whumpee, are you sure you can do this?" Caretaker asked gently.

Whumpee nodded slowly. They were having difficult time focusing. Talking required too much energy. With a sigh, they drew on the final dregs of their energy, siphoning them into the team's weapons. One final push.

"Thank you, Whumpee!" A chorus of voices called.

Whumpee barely heard them. They felt the blood dripping from their nose as their vision went dark and they pitched forward. They could only hope that Caretaker wouldn't let their head smack on the ground. They had exhausted their magical resources.

"Whumpee!" Caretaker's voice sounded so distant. But Whumpee didn't have the energy to respond as they sank into the quiet dark.

Merlin knew every mark and blemish on Arthur’s body. He’d bandaged wounds, applied salves, massaged oils into overworked muscles.  

He knew the still-pink skin on his forearm was from a sword cut in a bandit attack a month ago. The bruise on his shoulder was when he’d hit the ground hard during a full-on training session. The purple colour to his little toe was from when he’d stubbed it on the bed two days ago, although he refused to admit that one. Merlin had just been there to hear the cursing. 

The red mark on his cheek hadn’t been there when he’d left his chambers. Merlin wasn’t sure where he’d gone: Arthur had refused to say and ordered his servant to stay behind and polish his armour. Given they’d been caught in a downpour of rain that morning, Merlin had agreed. He had no intention of letting the metal rust after years of polishing it. 

Arthur had only been gone an hour. When he returned, he’d been subdued in a way Merlin rarely saw. With a red mark on his cheek. 

He’d been around Gaius enough to know the redness would fade and come the morning; there would be another bruise marring Arthur’s body. 

“What happened?” 

“None of your business.” Arthur’s tone was curt; his clear dismissal made more apparent as he turned away. He picked up a report. 

“Arthur.” 

“I’m busy.” 

“It’s upside down.” Usually, Merlin would’ve mocked him for it. But this didn’t feel right. He slowly put down the rag he’d been using and climbed to his feet. He had to pause for a second to get the blood flowing again, but then he staggered a few steps towards Arthur. 

The prince turned away, shoulders hunched. Merlin stopped. Everyone was entitled to their privacy. He made to back away. 

No. 

This wasn’t right. 

Privacy was one thing, but Arthur had only been gone an hour and returned injured and closed off. He wasn’t angry and he wasn’t bragging. Whatever caused this mark hadn’t been a scuffle with another knight or even a noble. 

Merlin’s destiny was to protect him. Sometimes, he wondered if that meant protecting Arthur from himself. 

He continued to approach. Arthur knew he was there when he paused at the prince’s shoulder, but he didn’t put more distance between them, telling Merlin without words it was safe to continue. Merlin put a hand on his shoulder. Arthur was rigid under his touch and unless Merlin was mistaken, a tremble ran through him. 

“What happened?” 

Arthur shook his head. “It doesn’t matter.” 

“It does to me.” 

“You can’t change anything.” 

Merlin knew that tone. Gaius said that he was stubborn, but when Arthur dug his heels in, Merlin had nothing on him. He squeezed his hand gently, then took a few steps towards the nightstand. 

“I’ll get the salve.” 

He needed it so frequently that he now just left it here. It also meant that Gaius wasn’t aware every time Arthur needed it; something that Merlin knew Arthur was grateful for. 

Picking up the small pot, he moved in front of Arthur. They both instinctively wrinkled their noses when he unscrewed the lids but while the unguent didn’t smell great, it was effective. Merlin dipped his finger in, put the pot down and used his now free hand to gently hold Arthur’s chin as he carefully rubbed it into the mark. 

As he did so, his magic slipped from him of its own accord. Arthur’s shoulders loosened and he gave a long sigh he didn’t seem to be aware of. 

But soothing the prince wasn’t the only thing the magic did. 

Images flashed through Merlin’s mind. 

Arthur making a report to the king about the increase in bandit attacks and how the knights were outnumbered and exhausted. 

Uther’s scathing response that Arthur wasn’t pushing them hard enough or training them well enough if a few outlaws could get the better of the Knights of Camelot. 

Arthur’s attempt to defend himself. 

“I am your king! You will obey me!” 

“We’ve scheduled more patrols, Sire. We don’t have enough men.” 

“Excuses. You’re weak.” 

“I’m trying.”  

Arthur’s voice had been steady, but Merlin could feel the emotions that had torn through him. Shame at the failure to stop the bandits but an even greater sense of failure that he couldn’t give his father, his king, the results that they both wanted. 

The blow had been an open-handed slap. Arthur hadn’t expected it but it wouldn’t have made any difference: he wouldn’t have defended himself against the king. He’d staggered to one side, losing his balance when he’d hit the edge of the ornate table in the king’s chambers. He’d fallen to his knees. 

“Better,” Uther had snarled. “That is the deference I want. I own you, Arthur. Your body, your mind, is mine to command. I am not just your king: I am your god. If I say ride until you drop, that is what you do. Now, get out!” 

Merlin stilled. Uther’s grip on sanity seemed to wane a little more every day since Morgana had disappeared. Merlin knew he was not the only one to have noticed. But the king didn’t seem to take out his ever-shortening temper on his people. Only his son. As if he held Arthur responsible for every bad thing or shortcoming happening. 

As far as Merlin knew, he’d never physically hurt his son though. 

“Arthur-,” Merlin didn’t know what to say. He couldn’t reveal that he knew exactly what had happened, but he also couldn’t let Arthur believe anything the king had said to him. 

“It’s alright, Merlin.” Arthur’s voice was soft, full of acceptance. He gently folded his own fingers around Merlin’s and drew it away from his face. “Better me than anyone else.” 

Arthur didn’t know about the magic, but Merlin sensed the prince had guessed his servant somehow knew how he’d got the mark. There weren’t many places Arthur went without Merlin in tow, after all, and the king’s chambers had always been one of them. 

“It’s not alright! He’s your father, he can’t-,” 

“He’s the king.” Arthur’s voice hardened. “He can do what he wants.” 

Merlin opened his mouth but didn’t know what to say. The memory rang clear in his mind. 

I am your god. 

Like with any deity, Arthur both feared and worshiped Uther in almost equal measure. Although lately, Merlin had sensed the former had slowly been taking the place of the latter. 

Just as Uther insisted he was a king rather than a father, Arthur took the stance he was a prince instead of a son. As a prince, he’d always take the blows to save any of his people from having to deal with it. 

Merlin settled for a sigh. “I’ll bring some more salve tomorrow.” 

“One that smells better than this one, I hope.” 

“Not sure it could smell any worse,” Merlin said, his nose wrinkling as he looked at the pot on the table. 

“This is Gaius we’re talking about – don't bet on it.” 

Merlin smiled. To his relief, Arthur returned it with a soft dip of his head. He wouldn’t speak directly against the king, but that didn’t mean he didn’t appreciate the assistance. 

If that was all Merlin could do to help, then he would make sure he did it to the best of his ability. 

After all, Uther’s slipping grip on reality was because of what had happened to Morgana.  

Which meant that all of this was Merlin’s fault.
