Genderbending Laios:

Laios has that energy of; if he ever got genderbent in-canon, his overwhelming reaction would be "Oh! Cool!" followed by "Oh wait! Maybe I can be better friends with Shuro now!" :D

Reasons it happens:

Different variant of Changeling Mushrooms that changes the physical sex of the afflicted rather than the race.

Variant of Shapeshifter that affects a target rather than itself.

Cursed by an artifact made by a misogynist.

Cursed by an artifact made by a girlboss.

Got too curious observing a goddess/entity and got the Siproites treatment.

Accidentally killed a pair of mating monsters and got the Tiresias treatment.

Ate/Drank something they really shouldn't have.

Marcille really f-d up a spell.

Laios really f-d up a spell.

Deal with the Winged Lion went kinda weird.

Thistle did it.

Party Reactions:

Marcille is most horrified cus girl Laios be a terror to keep out of trouble + unsettling resemblance to Falin.

Chilchuck be fighting demons rn; Laios is now a tall, blonde, big thiddy'd woman with no sense of personal space. He is a separated married halffoot damn it! Also, as a dad of three daughters, he's the only one who's prepared to give awkward growing-up conversations fem!Laios should be getting!

Chilchuck: "Laios, that's not how you use a sanitary belt." Fem!Laios, wearing it outside of her pants: "Eh?"

Shuro also fighting demons rn! His potential love interest's annoying older brother is now an annoying older sister who's fixated on becoming closer to him! Also him realising that what attracted him to Falin in the first place is also present in Laios.

Kabru even more intrigued if thats even possible. Meeting a woman who claims to have lived as man - not so strange if Kabru is FTM, but its still a pleasant surprise!

Namari: "When did this happen?" Laios: "Not too long ago." Namari: "Congrats, I guess?" Laios: "Thanks!"

Senshi just hums and says "You need to eat more pickled vegetables. The salts are important for growing women."

Izutsumi is Izutsumi. Lady Laios's bed be warm even tho she pets her a lot. Mom shaped.

Laios' Reaction

That feel when you accidentally crack your own transfem egg with magic.

Something-something; "Women be considered less human in a patriarchal system" so Laios is pretty chill with the situation, albeit is disappointed she doesn't have any cool fangs or multiple heads.

She 100% tries to communicate with the women-shaped monsters, thinking there's now a new common ground. She nearly gets mobbed by harpies before the rest of the party can intervene.

The party have to constantly remind fem!Laios that she has to keep a shirt on around company (which she thinks is dumb) and to be careful when asking men extremely personal questions ("Why?" "They think you're flirting with them." "I can?" "NO!").

Wasn't told how periods or feminine hygiene stuff worked cus it was considered "obscene" for boys to know that stuff in their village. Laios thought she was dying the first time she got her period. Was annoyed/fascinated when Chilchuck managed to explain that it was a natural process.

Laios: "And this happens every month?" Chilchuck, flustered & annoyed: "Yes, if you're healthy." Laios: "When does it stop?" Chilchuck: "A few days at most." Laios: "No, I mean the whole monthly process." Chilchuck: "Uhh... no idea. Think it's different for Halffoots, but normally it sorta just stops when you're a lot older." Laios, pondering face: "Hmm. I must ask any older women we come across in future. I would not like to experience this when I'm old and creaky. Then again... maybe this it why women are more predisposed to using blood magic." Marcille, overhearing: "What does THAT mean!?"

Laios proceeds to bluntly ask Mrs Floke very impersonal questions when their parties overlap. Mr Floke chokes on his tea as the twins snicker at his flustered face. Mrs Floke just laughs, it's not her first time explaining budding womanhood to a young tallman.

Laios takes the opportunity in the Golden Country to wear the fancy dresses with Marcille. Doesn't like them too much tho - prefers plain airy dresses.

Labru, but it's Laios stuck as a boring housewife taking care of her child basically by herself because her husband doesn't really care all that much,

Labru, but it's Kabru who sees the lonely housewife who tends and manages her husband's bar by herself and has a better relationship with her child than even her husband does,

Labru, but it's two souls meeting more than once and feeling happy, dare even excited and hoping to see each other at the very least once a day

Labru, but it's the two of them feeling as though they have met their soulmate, yet feel as though they cannot say a thing because Laios is married (though unhappy), and she is worried her father would never approve of her leaving the man who was arranged to be her husband AND see that she's in love with a man younger than her

Labru, but it's the story of the housewife who never felt like she mattered until she met a man who cannot stop thinking about her and finds her to be the most intelligent and interesting woman he has ever met

I've been thinking about this AU ever since I typed it up and I think I want only Laios to have changed gender because I really like the idea of Kabru coming up to talk to her, like he does with all new dungeon delvers, going "hi, I'm Kabru," and Laios immediately shoots back, "hi Kabru I'm married." And that keeps him awake for WEEKS.

Just read the "Genderswap" section of the Adventurer's Bible and...

I kinda wanna see an au of afab!Laios still tackle the dungeon with the same level of unhinged hunger as the original.

Yes, this version of Laios married and had children. But thats not to say she wouldn't still have the curiosity in her heart (and stomach) for monsters. Or indentify fully as female.

Also you know fem!Laios would be on orc men like a bee on honey.

Variant of my Laima Touden idea, inspired by comments by @tsatsked and @oceanqueenmusical;

Dunmeshi spoilers obvs:

instead of having kids like in the prev idea - Laios/Laima simply never had (or can't have) kids during their rough early years. This leaves them with the conflicting desire of wanting children/becoming a parent, but relief at not becoming a parent at such a young age or with someone they didn't love.

The Winged Lion senses this complex desire, and is intrigued... As a off-shoot of a greater being, it's never understood the concept of parenthood and children. It might as well have budded off from the greater cosmic Demon like coral polyp.

So when a certain battle of appetites occurs; the Winged Lion offers Laios a deal. The demon won't take away the tallman's greatest desire - but in return Laios must become his new "blood host". Whatever the hell that means.

Laios accepts the deal. The Winged Lion's heart and soul is eaten whole by a man with a monster's appetite.

The Demon goes quiet.

Laios is left with biological remnants of his chimeric form. Namely feathers upon his collar much like Falin (they now joke that it's a familial trait), wolfish body hair, powerful claws and teeth, etc...

Also he's nauseous, can't stand certain smells and food, craves others like they're vital to his life force, has a constant ache below his stomach, and his ankles are swelling.

Turns out what the Winged Lion meant by "blood host" was "birth parent". XD

Chilchuck screams in horror as he recognises the symptoms of pregnancy upon Merini's new monarch long before they do.

Assorted fem!Laios fic ideas;

My hc name for fem!Laios is; Laima.

Reasons:

Laima is the name of the Baltic goddess of fate, luck, motherhood, pregnancy, and children. Fem!Laios' life is defined by her role as a wife and mother, to the point that only a miracle could break her from the cycle.

Same amount of syllables. Laios = Lai-us. Laima = Lye-ma.

Move over the "I" and what do you get? Lamia. Aka; a mother driven so mad by the loss of her child that she is transformed into a man-eating monster. 👀

Special interests were shut down hard as a child. Parents steered her towards more "traditional" goals of marriage and motherhood. Still extremely adventurous - she's ultimately still the odd child who put bug egg cases in her cupboard.

Marriage was arranged by her parents. Going by Laios' timeline in the Adventurer's Bible; he was engaged even before he deserted the military

There's two ways I can see fem!Laios going;

A: She has two or three children, as her canonverse fiancé has, and took the kids in the divorce. Her kids 100% sneak away from their babysitter to help find and save Aunt Falin, pretending to be grown halflings. One child is a powerful magic user, while another has feral child-strength.

B: One where due to fertility issues she simply never had a child within her marriage, but really wanted one. Was pretty much exiled by her husband's family due to being "cursed", causing her some personal trauma. Her greatest desire is intertwined with her want of children - even a monster such as a Harpy can be wonderful mothers, why can't she?

Kabru alludes to there being abnormal results when a pregnant person is revived within the dungeon, but is cut-off before he can fully answer. Fem!Laios better be keeping it safe if she decides on splunking, less she accidentally create a host for an unknown horror seeking escape from the dungeon. (*wink*)

The imagery of motherhood and monsterhood intertwining to turn Laios/Laima from a "mere" housewife to a horror befitting primordial maternal entities like Echidna or Tiamat. (*chef's kiss*)
