And to love yourself in spite of all your imperfections.
Deuces 20/20
2020 is coming to a close and I think it is time I reflect, recharge and prepare to restart. Yet before I do, I want to share a bit of transparency & insight.
When I take a moment to pause and think about all the catastrophe that has occurred it brings out several emotions. I started the year with a business trip to California that I was blessed enough to bring two of my three children. We enjoyed a walk on the beach followed by brunch and began overhearing conversations of a plane that crashed involving Kobe Bryant and his family/friends. We were stunned and saddened just as others. I think about a news paper that I saw a few days after which in fine print referenced a “new virus” that was causing concern. Who knew that overlooked text would literally spread around the world and cause so many to be both infected and affected. Months of lockdown causing late bill payments, cancelled projects, no income, wearing gloves, face masks, stores out of toilet paper, price increases for hand sanitizers, Lysol and anything that read “antibacterial” which all felt like an apocalyptical movie happening in real life.
In the midst of pandemic racial injustice reverted to the early 1900′s and black men both young and old were being killed, black and brown children were disappearing and as women we were left with no other choice to SCREAM for our voices to be heard in a sea of tears. Some shouted ‘black lives matter’ while others argued ‘all lives matter’ yet all lives weren’t the ones who were becoming an endangered people. Businesses either supported or used the taglines as a façade yet again proving the point of why we won’t tolerate this egregious behavior.
To add insult to injury the US Presidential election was taking place and the amount of fecal matter that was thrown by politicians further segregated an already fractured people. I came across many social media gangsters, I even came across a few people who finally let their moral or immoral flags fly! No tact, no regard for others, a puke fest of hatred and disrespect.
All the while some get sick and get better, while others die alone in a hospital bed with no loved ones to hold their hand. Nurses and doctors away from their families for weeks which turned into months with hospitals packed to capacity. Children unable to go to school, no social interaction, learning sitting at a computer. Seniors not experiencing prom or the exhilaration of walking across the stage to receive a diploma or degree. Debates about economic relief, who deserves it and how much. $1200.00 halfway through the year and more on the way, right? If you budget correctly that should be enough to get you through the year at $100/month! Are you as relieved as I am?
Well, despite all of that I have learned a lot about myself this year. I learned about what I am willing to accept and what I am not. I also learned that everyone that say’s they support you does not. I lost some friends, gained perspective and pivoted with purpose! My faith was tested and became stronger. I was able to forgive regardless of not hearing “I apologize” and that is okay too. There is power in saying “no” and that block and delete button work very well on all of my devices. I laughed, I cried, I learned and I lived, I am still standing, I am still here, I got threw it and I’m stronger because of it. BAY-BAE, I can exhale because I know without a doubt I passed the 2020 test with flying colors.
Onward to 2021, taking no loses, striving & thriving only!
@marteegele I could be anywhere, my mind is always travelling. From surfing to the web, to watching shows and movies, art, street style, books, different things may inspire me. What fascinates me right now and how it is feeding into my work is the mind of a kid and how easy and loving and playful life can be with no care in the world. This helps me with being free-flowing and being more open to getting out of my comfort zone with how I function and execute designs.
