I have no memory of the musician hook post, but i always headcanon him as being a piano player because nearly every iteration of him he plays piano 😊 What do you think? What were your ideas?
My post was about how one could include Killian having one hand when writing him as a musician. I've seen so many fics where Killian is a musician and has two hands, because apparently you "can't be a musician" if you're missing a hand, and that's a) plain out wrong and b) hella ableist. But the ableism is for another post that I already made regarding how easily people delete Killian's disability because they're not willing to work around it.
Anyway, I'm a classically trained musician, so my post was mostly about classical orchestra instruments. And that includes the piano, which, while of course it poses a much bigger challenge if you're missing one hand, there have been entire concertos written specifically for one-handed pianists. Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand is spectacular on its own, let alone for a work that only uses one hand on its main, protagonist instrument.
And then there's like, a literal endless list of instruments to pick from. Even the guitar, the classic choice for musician AU fanfic, can be modified to be played by a one-handed musician. There's so many choices, so much variation, that it's a shame so many people choose the same ableist tactic of cancelling Killian's disability. To me, as a professional musician, it's boring, as a disabled person, it's insulting. My disability in specific does not affect my music-making, but from the moment you learn that there are even DEAF musicians out there, you start to not take shit from people who think disability can stop you from making music. Disability doesn't - ableism does.
Like, it would be okay if people don't wanna look too deep into music for their musician AU. I admit that after all the time I've spent studying music, I may be a bit of a snob. But to unwrite a character's canon disability to fit your basic plot and idea isn't just laziness - it's an insult.
