Firehouse 51 had a decent range of ages to its team. You had Herrmann and Boden, who were old enough to have families, those like Severide and Casey who were about middle-ranged, then the youngest ones like Y/n Herrmann. Being the youngest had its pros and cons - Y/n certainly didn’t have the most experience and she sometimes had the light hazing of being a candidate, but she also got to learn a lot from everyone else at the firehouse. Everyone there was also like family to her. Despite these things, Y/n was quite excited when Peter Mills came along to join the candidate pool. He was a few years older than her but the closest to her in age. Needless to say they hit it off not long after his arrival.
As happy as Y/n and Peter were to be a couple, they agreed to keep it out of the firehouse gossip for now, especially knowing that Chief Boden would have choice words for them. Herrmann knew, though; him being Y/n’s father made it a little hard for them to hide it.
Herrmann wanted to be happy for his daughter, but he worried about her career - it had been her dream to be a firefighter practically since she was born. And she, like Mills, had her eyes set on Squad. He tried talking to her nonchalantly about the matter, explaining to her the importance of all her classes and training right now, but didn’t have the guts to tell it straight - he didn’t think she should be dating right now.
He didn’t end up getting very far with her. So one day on shift, between calls, he brought Peter into an empty room. Peter, not knowing what this was about, swallowed nervously. Herrmann pursed his lips and sighed.
“Look, Mills - you’re a good kid…But right now, Y/n needs to focus on her training. She’s gearing up to be the youngest kid to join Squad - younger than you - let alone being a girl on Squad. So as a father - as her father - I’m asking you to let her focus on this ‘cause it’s her dream.”
Peter sighed and weighed his options. He eventually squared his shoulders a bit. “With all due respect, Mr. Herrmann, I’m leaving that up to Y/n. She talked with me about this and as much as I respect you, I want to respect her wishes. She told me before we started seeing each other that the academy comes first and she didn’t want to compromise her future and I understood that. But she still wanted to start a relationship and I won’t hurt her by backing down from that.”
Herrmann stared hard at the candidate. But he felt like he was between a rock and a hard place.
Y/n, who had been watching the two from around a corner, couldn’t hear them but knew what they were talking about. And she quietly worried for her boyfriend’s wellbeing if he chose to stand up to her dad.
Herrmann searched the younger man’s eyes and saw how resolute he was. “I respect you for not wanting to hurt her. But just know I still don’t like it,” he said honestly.
Peter went to reply but was interrupted by an alarm sounding.
“Ambulance 61, Truck 51, Rescue 3, house fire West 56th and East 2nd.”
The two men simultaneously ran out of the room to the apparatus floor, meeting with all the others who were about to go on the call. Y/n and Peter met eyes, sharing a look that meant they would talk later as they both pulled up their uniform pants, slapping the suspenders over their shoulders, and jumping into their trucks.
Everyone got updates to what exactly they were walking into as they neared the scene, sliding on final bits of equipment.
As they got to a stop outside the house, they saw a large mansion ablaze in front of them. A few people stood outside, coughing a bit but otherwise seeming ok.
Kelly jogged over to them, the rest of Squad 3 on his heels. “Ma’am, is there anyone else inside?” he asked the closest victim.
“My-My husband and two children are in there,” she cried.
“Where did you last see them?”
“My husband was in the living room and my-” a coughing fit interrupted her. After a moment she continued, “The kids are upstairs but they were playing hide-and-seek and the hallway was blocked by flames so I couldn’t get to them.” When she started sobbing, Kelly motioned for Dawson and Shay to come over.
“Ok, our EMTs are gonna check you out - my team and I will get the rest of your family.”
Severide motioned for his team to follow. “Casey, take half your team and sweep the downstairs for the husband, the other half go up to start venting the roof. Cruz, pull the truck around to the side of the house. Capp, get the ladder to that window over there,” he ordered. “Once we get it there, we go in and find the kids. Y/n, we go in with them.”
Everyone nodded and started getting to work. Y/n and Severide jumped up on their truck, holding onto bars until Cruz got them to the side of the house. As Capp extended the ladder, they climbed to the top of the truck and proceeded to go the length of the ladder to the second story window. Kelly broke the window to give them as wide of an opening as he could.
“Alright, let’s go!” he yelled, making his way through the window. The other three followed him and got to work, clearing rooms and searching for the children. Cruz found the first and he and Capp worked together to get him outside and down the truck ladder, leaving Severide and Y/n inside.
“Herrmann, we got the husband - head out!” Y/n heard called over their radios. Since there were technically two Herrmanns at Firehouse 51, both serving on different teams, her dad answered to ‘Herrmann’ and she was the only one called by her first name out in the field so they could tell who was being asked to do what.
The girl deflated a bit, knowing 2 of 3 people were now safe. But they still had to find the last one.
“Fire department, call out!” she yelled as she burst into another room.
“Severide, Y/n, the last kid’s name is ‘Brooke,’” Boden yelled over the radio. “Hurry up! Smoke’s getting darker!”
Y/n and Kelly began moving faster through the upstairs, finally coming to the fire in the hallway the first victim mentioned. “Lieutenant! What if she’s-”
“Help!”
Y/n spun around and heard the call again. She ran to a closet a few feet away, realizing it was the only door on this side they hadn’t checked. She opened the door and drew a blank until a small voice yelled, ‘up here!’
She looked up and saw a child, probably about ten years old, on the upper shelves of the closet. Seeing an opening in the ceiling, she guessed she must have tried hiding in the attic.
“Brooke, I’m gonna get you out of here, ok?” she said.
The young girl, tears painting clean trails through her smoke-covered face, nodded frantically. “My-My leg is stuck. I was hiding but came down when I heard my mom yelling,” she said, voice tearful.
Y/n grabbed her walkie talkie. “Severide, I found the girl but her leg is stuck. Do you have a vantage point to maybe come at her from the attic to free her leg?” Had they been in less of a time crunch, Y/n wouldn’t have dared to try and give Severide direction. But to her relief, it seemed he didn’t care as he gave confirmation.
She started pulling and stacking things to allow her to get eye-level with Brooke. She wiped one of her tear-stained cheeks and pulled her oxygen mask off. “I’m gonna put this over your face, ok, Brooke? It’ll help you breathe better. My friend, Kelly, is coming to help get you free but I need you to be brave, ok?”
The girl nodded as she took a few clean breaths of oxygen.
“Brooke, I’m Lieutenant Severide,” Kelly said from above them. “Your leg is caught on a broken board, this is gonna hurt but I’m gonna have to yank it free, ok?”
“I’ll be brave,” she said to Kelly, but maintained eye contact with Y/n, making her smile.
With a jerk from Kelly, and a contained whimper from the girl, her leg was free and she practically slid off the shelf she was on and into Y/n’s arms. She began rushing to the window with Kelly. He left first so Y/n could pass the girl to him and start getting out herself when the floor beneath her feet gave way.
We went from “Bury Your Gays” to “Just Cancel the Show Instead” real quick and I honestly can’t say which is fucking worse at this point.
Honestly, finally giving the queer community good, wholesome, and non-toxic content only to have it ripped away for no articulable reason (WN has the highest critic score of any Netflix show ever) is feeling worse than outright killing queer characters.
At least we knew not to get attached when they were shooting us.
“Kelly Severide, stop laughing at me.” Shay said in frustration. “Why? It’s funny that you have something bad to say about every beautiful ring you see.” Her best friend had been with her in the jewellery store for the past hour, not to mention that it was the fourth jewellery store they had visited in the past week.
“The ring has to be perfect, Kelly.” He shook his head, “I know, but at this pace there aren’t going to be any rings left in the world. That girl is head over heels for you, and will say yes no matter what ring you pick. “Still I want it to be perfect.”
They kept looking around at the ring collection this store had until Shay’s eyes fell on the one. “Oh my god, that’s it. That is the ring!” Kelly celebrated quietly behind Shay’s back. He loved his best friend dearly, but was also glad that he would finally be spending his days off somewhere other than in a jewellery store.
For Shay it had been easy to keep her thoughts of wanting to ask for your hand in marriage, but now that she had something physical to do it with, she was anxious you would find out. She had given Kelly the ring for safekeeping, but still she knew that she wouldn’t be able to keep the plan a secret for much longer. So, she changed her original plan a little bit, and decided she was going to ask you on your next date night.
Since you both worked 24 hour shifts at the firehouse, you made sure that you made time for each other on your hours off. One of the things you did to reassure you would have some time set aside was a set date night. It really didn’t matter what you did, the only thing that mattered is that you did it together.
Today’s date night, you went to the Field Museum of Natural History. They had a dinosaur section, which is exactly why Shay wanted to bring you here. You loved dinosaurs and learning more about them. You thought the museum was amazing, and were running around showing her things like an excited little kid.
When you got back home, you were still talking about the dinosaurs. So much so that you didn’t realise the set up of your living room. Shay looked around, very happy with how her idea had played out. She had asked Kelly and Dawson to set up the “Will you marry me?” sign surrounded by a rose petal heart. It looked absolutely perfect, now you just had to look around.
The moment that you did, time stood still. You looked at the setup in front of you with your jaw dropped, and eyes widened in surprise. When you turn to look at your girlfriend, she is down on one knee and holds out an open ring box towards you. “Yes, yes, yes!” You say with tears in your eyes.
“You're not even going to let me ask the question?” She giggles with tears in her own eyes from your excitement. “Oops?” You laugh back. “Please ask me, darling.”
With a big smile on her face, Shay holds your hand. “You are my best friend, and I want to spend the rest of my life by your side. Y/n Y/l/n, will you marry me?”
You're now both full on crying, but in the best way. “Yes, I will definitely marry you!” You fall into her arms and sob happy tears into each other's shoulders.
The rest of the evening was spent in the comfort of your home and each other's arms. It wasn't until the next day that you told people about your engagement. Shay sent Severide a picture with the text “She said yes!” He congratulated the both of you and invited you for a drink at Molly's.
Of course, you should have expected the whole team to be waiting for you inside of Molly’s as you arrived. All of them yelling out “Surprise!” When you walked through the door. It was nice celebrating this step in your relationship with the people closest to you, the people that had become your family over the years.
The next day where the team was back at work, the room buzzed with energy. Everyone was excited about the engagement, and was asking all kinds of questions about your plans for the wedding. Above all else, they were thrilled that the couple they had seen grow over the years, was taking the next step together.
Your day started off calm, but as soon as that first bell rang, you knew it wouldn’t be stopping any time soon. As you expected, the calls began to pile up, and the intensity grew. A handful of car accidents, a heart attack victim, and a kitchen fire kept you busy in just the morning.
There was just enough time to have some lunch, before the bells rang again. All units were called to respond to the scene, so you knew this was going to be a serious one.
A multi-story building had caught fire, and people were still trapped inside. You rushed into truck 81 and your team raced to the scene. When you got there you realised just how far gone the building was. Flames were shooting out the windows, and thick dark clouds of smoke hung around the tall frame of the building.
Without hesitation, you all sprang into action. “Y/l/n, you’re going up with me. The rest help Squad.” You put on your mask and ran inside, following close behind Casey. When you got up to the fire floor, there was no time for second-guessing, you had to go before the building would collapse.
The heat and the thick smoke combined, made it hard to see anything at all. Yet you kept yelling out, until finally you heard voices respond. A family of four was hiding in the bathroom, as most of the room was engulfed in flames.
You and Casey worked together to get the trapped family into the hall. You stood in the middle of the room, helping them over the flames, while Casey got them into the hallway. The moment that the family was out in the hallway, the ceiling about you gave way.
One of the beams came crashing down, and pinned you to the floor. “Go, get downstairs!” Casey shouted to the family. The safest for them was to head down and meet another firefighter there, he didn’t want more of the ceiling to collapse while the family was still there.
“Mayday mayday, firefighter down on the sixth floor.” He radio’s in while he makes his way to you. Seconds after Shay’s voice is heard over the radio. “Casey, is y/n okay?” He doesn’t answer, as he doesn’t know the answer himself yet.
“Casey, come in.” Boden requested as the line was still quiet from your end. “Getting to her now. The ceiling collapsed and she’s trapped under a beam. She’s conscious, but I need help getting it off of her.”
You were conscious and talking to Casey while he was trying to pull the beam off himself, without any luck. Luckily more people arrived to aid him, very quickly. With many hands, cribbing, and the right tools, they were able to get you out from underneath the weight of the beam quickly.
When you got outside, one arm over Casey’s shoulders and the other over Severides, you finally felt like you could breathe again. Shay ran into your arms. “Are you okay? Let me check you out, please, I need to make sure that you’re okay.” You lift your arms from the boys and hold onto your fianceé. “I’m okay, just going to be really sore tomorrow.”
“I thought I lost you.” You shake your head. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.” You joke, but you were well aware of how the situation could have ended. “Life is too short. I don’t want to waste any time.” Shay was quick to chime in, “You don’t have to convince me, let’s get married as fast as we can.”
After a long and exhausting shift, the team got together for a small firehouse wedding. It was just quickly thrown together, but you had all you needed. Your bride and your family surrounding you.
Severide walked Shay down the makeshift aisle, while you were standing in the doors of the apparatus floor with Casey by your side. He was like a brother to you, so there was not even a question on your mind when Shay asked you who you would want to walk you down the aisle. “Are you ready?” He says as he watches your eyes meet Shay’s. “I’ve never been more ready for something in my life.”
You met Shay between Truck 81 and Ambulance 61, a small touch to give even more meaning to this day. Boden stood between you, who better to officiate your wedding than the man that had been like a father figure to the both of you.
The ceremony, while simple, was perfect. It was a day neither one of you would ever forget. After you had said your I do’s and sealed your marriage with a kiss, you carried Shay inside bridal style.
While the day may be over, your shift was not. But for now the team would rest, and hope to be recharged enough when the next bell rang. For you the day was perfect, just because you had Shay by your side for the rest of your life.

a/n: i don’t rlly like this but it’s smth quick and short cuz i was bored. i literally saw this gif and the idea came to me, idk what it was about the gif but it resulted in this so here you go ! enjoy reading <3
“Hey gorgeous,” You heard him say as you walked in, winking at you.
“Morning, Severide.” You reply, rolling your eyes.
“When are you going to let me take you out?” He asked like clockwork.
This had been going on since the week you'd joined the firehouse. Each day, he’d ask if you wanted to go on a date with him. And every time, your response would be the same,
“Never.”
Yet he still hadn't given up, “Never say never, m’lady.” His answer earned a chuckle from you, causing a grin to form on his face.
Truth be told, you really liked him. He was not only an excellent leader but also a great friend. And let's face it, he wasn't bad looking either. Who were you kidding? You could get lost in those mesmerizing blue eyes for hours. He was beautiful.
But you also knew him. You knew his reputation. A ladies’ man, a womanizer, a playboy— you could go on and on. You were aware of the multiple women he'd take home weekly and you didn’t want to be one of them. You weren't the kind of girl who regularly has one-night stands. There's nothing wrong with them, it just wasn't who you were.
The point is, you didn't want to just be someone he was one and done with. Which is why you were continuously rejecting his advances. You couldn't lie though, it was fun watching him flirt with you in hopes of one day, getting your attention.
As you entered the kitchen in search of coffee, you noticed that he had quietly followed you inside.
“So. Any plans for this weekend?” He questioned, as you poured yourself a cup.
“Actually, yes. You want one?” You asked, pointing the mug at him.
“No thanks, but do tell.” He inquires.
“I have a date.”
“With who?” He instantly questions.
“Not that it's any of your business, but this guy I met at a coffee shop down the street a few days ago,” You reply, smiling.
He rolls his eyes in annoyance but tries once more, “How about you ditch him and go on a date with me instead, beautiful?”
“Once again Severide, not happening.” You shut him down for the umpteenth time, walking away.
Shay was currently at your apartment helping you get ready for the date you had tonight.
“I'm just saying, I've never seen him so into a girl before.” She tells you, lying on your bed as you rummage through your closet for something to wear.
For the last hour, she has been persistently trying to convince you that Kelly has suddenly developed a romantic interest in you.
“Leslie, I know he's your best friend and roommate and that you have to be on his side or whatever- but come on, we both know how he is. Which one?” You ask, revealing two black dresses you were struggling to choose between.
“The one on the left.” She answers before going back to the topic at hand, “He’s changed Y/N- he hasn't brought home a single girl in the last month! If that doesn't tell you something then I don't know what will.” She exclaimed.
“Just because he hasn't brought them home doesn't mean he hasn't been to their places instead.” You point out, putting on the dress.
She sighs. “Just give him a chance Y/N, he's a great guy.”
“I know he is, but being a great man doesn't also necessarily make you a great boyfriend.” You say while beginning your hair and makeup.
“You’re so difficult.” She counters, earning a giggle from you.
Shay had gone home and since you were done getting ready with 30 minutes to spare, you decided to watch some TV.
You were flipping through the channels when you heard a knock at your door. Assuming your date had arrived early, you hurriedly went to answer it.
“Hey, you made it-” You speak excitedly before looking up and noticing who it is, “Severide?” You furrow your brows, not expecting him to be here.
“You look absolutely breathtaking.” He says, looking you up and down.
His words quickened the pace of your heart. And the way his gaze slowly roamed down the outline of your body caused a shiver to run down your spine, electrifying every nerve along the way.
“Uhh, thanks… But what are you doing here? If you're looking for Shay, she left a while ago-” You quickly answer, pushing aside the way his compliment made you feel before he cuts you off.
“I'm not here for her, I’m here to talk to you.”
“Well, you better make it quick because I'm sure my date will be here soon.” You open the door further, letting him into your space.
“Screw that guy!” He says turning to face you towards the door, “How many times do I have to ask you- go out with me. Please.”
If you didn't know him any better, you'd almost think he was desperate with the way he was pleading.
“Kelly,” You pause, noticing the way his breath hitches at your use of his first name. “I don't want to be just another name you add to your list of girls you've slept with.”
“You won't be! I like you Y/N and if you let me, I can prove it to you. I’m done with all the women- all I want is you.” He lets out exasperated.
“You mean that?” Still unsure of his motives, you look into his eyes searching for anything to prove to you that he’s being honest.
He nods before repeating his earlier statement while taking a step closer to you, “So how about, you call up your coffee shop man, tell him you're canceling and let me take you on this date instead?”
You laugh, “You drive a hard bargain Kelly Severide.”
“Is that a yes?”
You nod, not being able to contain your ear-to-ear grin, loving the way he beams back at you. That smile is something you could definitely get used to.
“Don't make me regret this Severide.” You say in a teasing manner.
“God no.” He says relieved before swiftly pulling you into a bone-crushing hug, causing you to erupt into a fit of giggles.
Maybe Shay was right, maybe he really had changed for the better.
