I loved this so much. Ruby Landers writing never fails to make me feel things, to be comforting, to feel absolutely right as soon as I start.

I loved Hope and Alison so much. They’re both loud, confident, opinionated and bossy. Both kind, compassionate and loyal as hell. But they’re both so wildly different from each other, too, in ways I can’t quite articulate.

I loved the slow burn of it all, the way they were both definitely attracted to each other from the start but both settled on being friends, only to proceed to pine for each other for the whole book. It was absolutely wonderful. I was living for it.

I LOVED this messy, close, wonderful friend group. SO messy. But they all loved each other so, so much. I hope we get to learn more about them all in future books 👀

Head's up, although the sapphic romance is HEA, this book is all about grief and loss. So please note that when considering if you'd like to read it. This year has been hard on all of us, and our hearts can't take a lot right now. If a book about grief isn't for you, I totally get that, and want to make sure you know what to expect going in ❤️

“I mean, I hate bowling as much as the next person,” Eve said, one eyebrow raised as she looked out the front windscreen. “But you’re acting a little wild, in case you hadn’t noticed.” It was such a normal reaction, so human, that Gemma couldn’t cope. She was sitting here at four in the morning with a ghost that acted like a person and a person that acted like a ghost, and she just couldn’t fucking cope. She shoved the gearstick into reverse and spun back around, nearly skidding out in the dirt. “Whoa, turn back,” Eve protested. “We have to go there.” “Okay, but try this for size: no.” To her surprise, Eve started laughing—soft, delighted laughter. “Like, literally, what in the seven hells is wrong with you?” It was an excellent question, and one that Gemma didn’t care enough about to answer. Sometimes it felt like there was a tiny galaxy imploding inside her chest. Other times, it felt like there was nothing there at all. Alex chimed in from the back seat. “She’s right, Gem, you’re acting totally barmy.” “I’m not acting crazy!” Gemma yelled into the rearview mirror, her eyes locked to the piercing gaze of her dead, imaginary brother. She could feel Eve staring at her, but she refused to turn. The road crested a hill, and the valley lay before her. The earth was tinged with the first hint of orange from the morning sun, and a flock of corellas stirred in the trees. Several hundred of them rose above the tree tops and circled, shrieking at the dawn. “You still haven’t told me your name.” Gemma startled. She’d almost forgotten Eve was there. When she glanced over, Eve’s expression was unreadable, and as the light hit it, her face appeared translucent for the first time. Clearing her throat, Gemma said, “It’s Gemma. How long has it been since you saw the sun?” Eve blinked and turned to the front. “A while,” she admitted, a strange quality to her voice. It almost sounded like wind. “Am I fading?” “A little, but I don’t think you’re disappearing.” “I wasn’t sure what would happen. I never stay this long.” Eve tapped her fingers against the car door, lips pursed in thought. Gemma had known the ghost might not last the night, but her skin didn’t seem to be fading any more than it had already. It had only lost a touch of its opacity, like her skin was made with milky resin instead of flesh, but she was otherwise as solid as always. “I need to sleep.” The second she said it, Gemma’s mouth broke into a humongous yawn. She’d been driving for close to twenty-four hours straight. A green sign told her there was a service station in a kilometre, so she took the next exit and swung into the back of the car park, where the trucks went. There was space under a tree where no truck could fit, and within minutes she’d cut the engine and unbuckled her seat belt. “What am I meant to do?” Eve asked. “Don’t suppose you could get me some chips?” Gemma asked over another yawn. “Sure, and then I can feed you grapes and wave a palm leaf over you too.” “Didn’t think so.” A pair of corellas burst free from the branches above the car, cackling as they rose up into the lightening sky, and Gemma fell asleep.
