So there's this book coming out called A Treachery of Swans and it's a sapphic Swan Lake retelling. My friends and I got to make the official soundtrack for it and it releases THIS FRIDAY. Every artist on the EP is queer and put their hearts into this. It would mean the world if you pre-saved because not only does it help us out but it ensures you hear it as soon as it drops.

any australians in the crowd tonight, the national library’s fabulous online resource trove is losing funding next year and if nothing happens to change that it will likely cease to exist. trove is not only a valuable resource for historians like me, it is a national cultural archive that is of great importance to australian society today. it is also completely accessible and free of charge to anyone with the internet; how fucking rare is that! we can’t lose it. i can’t even imagine the consequences.

if you’re as emotional about this as i am, or even if you’re not but love pestering people in power for any reason whatsoever, please contact your local mp and ask them to save trove and commit to funding this invaluable resource beyond july 2023. you can find your local member here. please also contact susan templeman mp, the special envoy for the arts, and tony burke mp, the arts minister.

For the end of spooky season! Cancer is about loss: of hair, teeth, friends… and words. For a couple years before I was diagnosed with late stage lymphoma, I watched my writing go off a cliff in terms of quality and speed - sentences turned to nonsense, and I couldn’t finish anything. It was terrifying. So was trying to come back to writing and publishing after having a traumatic time with chemo. ‘Where was she last year?’ ‘Who’s that again?’ ‘Oh, I thought you were…’ My confidence was shattered, and being approached for Sabrina was a life raft to cling to: being remembered, having fun with writing again, falling for a wild strange fantasy world. As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.

Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.

www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

#i remember about ten years ago at a conference #they talked about the impending loss of serendipitous searching #where the algorithm controls what you see in accordance to what it thinks you already want #and how life and learning is fundamentally in contradiction to this because it narrows down your opportunities for growth #to this weird subset of things you already know or have the potential to know #instead of allowing you to land on the weird and wonderful far beyond your own personal sphere #anyway i dont have much of a point here but it stuck with me #and I'm glad to see resources emerging to counter googles influence
