Last week, through our partners @ #FFWCC we were able to hatch 344 Frosted #FlatwoodsSalamander eggs in our #SalamanderLab — This imperiled species is the #1 priority at the Amphibian Foundation, which houses the only captive colony on the planet! Most of the larvae will be permanently housed outdoors in our 20 #mesocosms (artificial wetlands) where we can rear them into adulthood in 'semi-wild' conditions. Post-metamorphic Frosted Flatwoods Salamander (this picture is from early summer). The Amphibian Foundation holds the only captive collection of this species (Ambystoma cingulatum) on the planet, and are currently building a state-of-the-art ‘salamander lab’ to rear them to adulthood. At that point we will begin captive breeding experiments. Recently metamorphosed Frosted Flatwoods Salamander, Ambystoma cingulatum. This picture was taken back in May soon after we received young salamanders from our partners at St Mark's Wildlife Refuge. We are building a captive breeding colony for this endangered species with the hopes to release the offspring into managed and protected habitat. Metamorphs are typically drab colored until their adult pattern develops.
