My partner works for Google and a number of colleagues expressed interest in learning how to spin. This came up because I’d asked my partner to use the offices laser machine to test cut some new tablet weaving cards and … let’s say explanations of what he was doing led to the fiber arts rabbit hole.
So, over the last two weeks I led 2 one hour workshops at the Google offices makerspace teaching spinning basics. Everyone got packs containing a 3D printed turkish spindle with a yarn leader, a spin card, shetland roving, merino rolags, & a little information pack covering terminology, spinning/plying/finishing techniques, and details on the wools.
I’m really proud of my students who were attentive and curious. One student from the first workshop sadly discovered wools were an irritant but came back for the second workshop to try using plant, synthetic, & fine wools I prepared for them (was much better for them). Everyone made some really lovely singles with some people even attempting optimising their yarn for their crochet/knitting.
Googlers are such a creative community I’m hoping I’ll hear stories of future mini fiber frolics happening in the maker space now.
