I know many filmmakers and weird artists have their stories about how David Lynch has influenced them in one way or another, so here is what I'd like to share.
Back in high school, I was becoming more motivated to write screenplays. So much so I started teaching myself, drawing inspiration from novels and film. However, I felt that what I was creating didn't feel like "me" if that makes sense. I was sticking to the formula of the content I read and watched and I wasn't satisfied with the results though teachers liked my work. I knew in time I needed to stand out without feeling like I was trying too hard.
Then in my senior year, I rented a copy of Eraserhead either from Blockbuster or the local library (memory is a little fuzzy there.) I didn't know much about the film, but I liked the poster a lot. The first time I watched it, I didn't realize it would LITERALLY change the way I viewed storytelling. I became hooked on surrealism soon after, finding various films like that.
I told everyone I could about Eraserhead and of course they looked at me like I was crazy lol. I was introduced to Lynch's filmography moving forward, which inspired me more to want to pursue film and writing.
The entertainment and art world lost a real one. I thank him for the inspiration. ❤
