Cerró los ojos y procuró centrarse en encontrar el modo de escapar de allí. No sabía cuánto tiempo llevaba encerrado, de cuánto disponía hasta que volvieran. Empezaba a oscurecer en la habitación. La tarde estival se iba esfumando y él forcejeó con las ataduras una vez más hasta que los músculos le pidieron a gritos que parara. Era inútil. A lo mejor lograba escupir la mordaza y pedir socorro. Abrió la boca todo lo que pudo, notando el chasquido del cartílago de la mandíbula, y clavó con fuerza la lengua en el tejido mojado al tiempo que se mecía en la silla. Estaba funcionando, pero con el esfuerzo empezaron a pitarle los oídos y se ahogaba. Paró e intentó controlar la respiración, que le silbaba por la nariz. Luego corcoveó en la silla hasta que consiguió volcarla, haciéndole caer al suelo. Allí tendido, de pronto reparó en el silencio del cuartito. Hizo un esfuerzo por oír el gimoteo de la mosca y su penoso empeño en romper el cristal. Nada. ¿Había escapado? ¿Cómo? El miedo empezó a extenderse como una mancha por todo su cuerpo y el corazón comenzó a aporrearle el pecho. Book Review…Local Gone Missing by Fiona Barton Elise was a successful detective before a medical leave left her unsure if she would return. Now she spends most of her days watching the tensions grow in the seaside town of Ebbing. The weekenders are renovating the old homes & the locals do not like the changes. Everything comes to a head when a newcomer wants to have a giant music festival that will put the town on the map & two teenagers overdose. When a man disappears the first night of the festival it draws Elise back to work. But Ebbing is a town full of secrets & connections that run deeper & darker than Elise could have ever imagined. This was an intriguing mystery. When it first starts it seems like a straightforward mystery but when the lies, connections & twists come it becomes very complex. It's told from multiple points of views & the timeline moves from past to present. But the moving timeline just gives you a clearer picture of everyone involved. It has a lot of parts & a lot of characters but the author brings it together nicely. I like Elise's character. She's intelligent, strong & determined. & her neighbor Ronnie was a lot of fun. She added some humor to the story. The pace is one that speeds up as everything starts happening & coming together which leads to a satisfying ending! The Suspect is the 3rd book from Fiona Barton. “Two teenage girls die in a fire while on a trip to Thailand. What happened? What were they doing? Who else was there? Journalist Kate Waters is on the story…until a personal connection pulls her off. And now she is desperate to track down her son.” Like many current thrillers, this is told in dual timelines. The girl’s story leading up to the fire and Kate’s POV trying to find her son. It’s hard to find a character to like or pull for here. The story feels like it labors a bit. I thought Barton’s first book, The Widow, was okay. I really liked her 2nd book, The Child. This book is okay but the story has no surprises or unexpected twists. If you read thrillers at all you already know what’s going to happen 🤷🏼‍♂️ Big audiobook cast - they do a good job. 📚 Présentation des réceptions 📚 Avec un peu (beaucoup) de retard, voici les petits nouveaux qui ont rejoint ma PAL en milieu de semaine dernière : - « Les Adultes », de Caroline Hulse, paru chez @fleuve_editions il y a quelques jours, et dont ma chronique paraîtra très prochainement, puisque je m’étais empressée de le lire quasiment dès son arrivée et qu’il m’a fallu moins d’une journée pour le terminer ! Vous trouverez la 4ème de couverture de ce roman à la fois noir et déjanté sur la deuxième photo 😉 ➖ - « Le Suspect », de Fiona Barton, à paraître chez Fleuve Éditions (collection Fleuve Noir) le 09 Janvier prochain.
