okay smokey bear! basically i saw non- americans having questions about this little guy on the poll and thought why not.

so he is the mascot for the US forest service for their campaign about wildfire prevention! the campaign was conceived in the early 40s as a result in a fire started in los padres national forest due to fallout from ww2 and the realization that there was a lack of firemen due to the draft, so the general public needed to do their part in protecting forests. the original animal mascots were characters from Bambi (1942) and were such a success that the campaign decided to create their own (as well as only having the bambi character rights for a year). and a bear just, made sense!

and then! in 1950 during a forest fire in new mexico a crew of firefighters rescued a bear cub that was severely injured and he was dubbed smokey, he became a national news story and the public fell in love with him.

smokey the bear continues to be a public service figure, and he has an attitude which i find hilarious but guilting works 🤷🏻

anyway, it is my favorite propaganda campaign because a) cute sassy bear and b) actually a good cause. it is the longest running public service advertising campaign and will be turning 80 next year!

Officially Opening Up Submissions for the Ships Bracket!

It's been a while since I've done this, so bear with me here! But we are finally getting started on the next bracket over here on this blog! Last time it was blorbos (sorted by fandom), and this one will be ships (with a different seeding method).

There are a few rules, of course, and some will be restated when the polling starts:

Be nice. If there is hate in the tags or replies of any poll throughout the bracket, I will delete it or you will be blocked or both. It's a bracket about fictional characters. It's not that deep.

Canon doesn't matter! To quote the 911 team motto: who cares!? It can be canon, it can be a headcanon, it can be a crack ship if you want, there's no judgement* here! (if a character is canonically gay/lesbian, do not submit a ship with them and the opposite sex, the submission will be ignored)

At least one member of the ship has to be a firefighter or a paramedic. This blog was created to support our favorite fictional first responders, and that will continue!

Pairings and OT3+ are encouraged!

Submissions will close Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at 12pm PDT, and the bracket will be posted within the following few days, May 1st at the latest.

The inbox, of course, is open for questions and comments and curiosities, but please do not submit ships there. They will be ignored and not considered when I make the bracket.

Welcome (back) to the world of firefighter-focused brackets! I've been gone for a little while, but I'm back (kind of) to open up submissions for...

The Firefighter Ships Bracket

Not unlike my first bracket on this blog, I'm planning on starting this bracket with 32 seeds - if I get enough submissions for different ships among a variety of fandoms, I might bump it up to 64 starting seeds. It will just depend on how submissions go. I'll keep this space updated if and when I know more! The submission form can be found here!

Rules:

Submissions will close on Saturday, May 27th at 12pm PST. It gives you almost two weeks to submit ships and me almost two days to seed the bracket and put things together before I go back to work after my trip.

I will be capping the number of 911/One Chicago/etc ships if it's necessary. It's going to depend on how many submissions each ship gets and how many other fandoms get represented - I just don't want one fandom taking over half of the bracket when other, smaller fandoms could get that spotlight instead

At least one (but not necessarily both+) members of the ship must be a firefighter or a paramedic.

The ships do not have to be canon, or even just pairings. I'll accept anything from pairings to OT3+, canon or hinted at. However - they must have some basis in canon. Two characters from different fandoms or characters who have never interacted don't work here. I'm sorry.

Be nice. This wasn't an issue until the final round of the first bracket, so I trust you guys to keep it civil again. As long as that's the case, anonymous will stay on for the inbox. However, after the mess of the finals round, replies on posts will be kept off. You're more than welcome to reblog and put your thoughts in the tags or in additional text on your own blog, instead.

Have fun! Let's enjoy this silliness during the hiatus, and get excited about our ships together!

Remember, submissions close at noon on May 27th, so make sure to send in your ships before then!
