1. Family

Laios' family consists of his father (the village chieftain), mother, and little sister Falin. A talented mage, from a young age Falin possessed a mysterious power that allowed her to hear the voices of the dead. Others found this ability creepy, and she found herself the target of persecution because of it. Since Laios' father chose to expel Falin from the village instead of protecting her, Laios' animosity toward him has led to them not meeting for over 10 years. His mother is mentally frail and prone to being bedridden; it seems that Laios is not on good terms with her either. Incidentally, the reason why Laios looks so tidy is because at one point he grew out his hair and beard, but Falin mentioned that he was starting to "look a lot like Dad"

2. Monster research

Due to his love of monsters, others recommended that Laios become a monster scholar. However, academia presented an insurmountable barrier to Laios, and he soon gave up on that path. From most to least interesting, the types of monsters he likes are: Dragons = Animals > Magical Beings > Plants > Insects > Undead > Spirits. There is a monster scholar Laios respects, but the person in question likes to spout ridiculous, groundless theories about monster, other scholars steer clear of them at academic conferences. However, Laios is rather fond of those crazy theories

3. Unexpected Talent

As he's copied the drawings of monsters in his Monster Field Guide countless times, Laios is very good at drawing monsters. However, he's terrible at drawing anything else. The (overstuffed) "Ultimate Monster" that Laios came up with is a hybrid of: rhinoceros, bull, bird (2 species), bat, snake, horse, boar, and tiger.

4. Military Deserter

Laios enlisted in the military after graduating from school; it was there that he learned his fundamental swordsmanship skills. However, the army's regulations didn't sit well with Laios, so he ran away. He joined a caravan that passed through town, as they let him ride along with no fare so long as he helped with odd jobs. Even after he arrived at the island, Laios earned his living expenses doing things such as helping to load and unload cargo at the harbor.

5. Ban on Romance

After seeing his dungeon party nearly fall apart after two members fell in love*, Chilchuck warned Laios that workplace romances should be forbidden. Though Laios met his fiancee once and thought she was cute, the engagement was broken off after he ran away from home. Apparently, the woman in question is now a mother of three. Incidentally, since Laios' current savings are only enough to purchase a single horse and several goats, trying to find a bride would likely be a difficult task for him.

Here's the original text "過去に仲間といい仲になりかけて 、パーティーが解散の危機に見舞わ れたため" as far as I can tell (considering context) it's something like "due to him getting too close to a companion the party nearly fell apart" but I can't really tell.

Izutsumi Revealed in Five Keywords

1. Monster Soul

Izutsumi's soul is merged together with a "Giant Cat"*, a monster that inhabits the Eastern lands. Just as the name implies, the monster is basically a cat, but bigger in size. Incidentally, the true appearance of this Giant Cat was made clear when the party was attacked by succubi and they showed one in the form of an "ideal type". Izutsumi blames the monster's soul for her half-human appearance, and also feels that it obstructs her from developing close personal relationships with others. She believes that once the curse upon her is removed, all of these problems will be resolved. It seems that Izutsumi also harbors some deep doubts as to how much of her original self is left inside her. *

2. Past

Originally put on display as a "Cat Girl" in a freak show***, Shuro's father ended up taking an interest in her and purchased Izutsumi. She was given the name "Asebi" afterward and started living at the Nakamoto household.

3. Maizuru

Maizuru is in charge of Shuro's education****; she is also the only thing in the world that terrifies Izutsumi. After she was taken into the Nakamoto household, Maizuru put Izutsumi through a harsh training curriculum designed to teach her speaking, common sense, and combat skills. Since Izutsumi would hardly listen to anything she said, Maizuru ended up putting "Ninpo: Babysitter"***** on Izutsumi, which would activate if it was not touched by Maizuru at regular intervals.

4. Dark History

When Laios and the others arrived at the Golden Castle's village, they saw people living together peacefully with monsters. The barrier cast over the village affected monster behavior, and it deeply affected Izutsumi as well, causing her to become clingy with Marcille. Upon leaving the village and returning to her senses, Izutsumi spent a while agonizing over how she had behaved. However, even in that changed state it seems she still did not like Laios very much.

5. Picky Eater

A very picky eater even during her time at the Nakamoto house-hold, Izutsumi would always give the food she didn't like to Tade. She harbors a serious dislike of mushrooms, and will toss them away in an egregious display of bad table manners. However, she seemed to enjoy mushrooms quite a lot when she was turned into an orc by the changelings…

*Official english translates is as "greater cat" but the term in japanese directly translates as "big cat" (大猫) the same as as the big bat (大蝙蝠). I had to ramble about it here

**The translation of this section in the official english sounds very off to me, I recommend reading both to compare cause it's too many details to mention here.

***Official english translated it as "sideshow" but the term used in japanese "見世物小屋" does actually mean freak show, the ones with human exhibits.

****Official english translated it as "Maizuru, who was also Shuro's Governess,(...)", the actual word used for governess is "教育係" which as far as I could tell means "educator", I think governess works but it sounds a little awkward to me personally.

Senshi Revealed in Five Keywords

1. Griffin Soup

One of the more memorable episodes from Senshi's past. Hopelessly lost inside the dungeon, Senshi's companions were killed off by monsters one by one as tempers began to flare within the party. When it was finally down to Senshi and Gillin, was the soup that Gillin prepared really made of meat from a Griffin he had killed, as he had claimed…?

To solve this mystery and honor the memory of his lost companions, Senshi set out on a solo trip into the dungeon, but the 4th floor was too difficult for him to overcome on his own. And it was in the midst of these troubles that he ran into Laios' party…

2. Gillin's Mining Crew

Senshi's parents passed away from sickness and an accident when he was only 22 years old*. With nowhere to go, he was taken in by Gillin. Afterward, he ended up joining Gillin's newly founded mining

crew. Senshi struggled internally because he didn't possess the drive to strike it rich through ancient technologies or mining like other dwarves. He wasn't very good at playing along with dwarven ribbing like "Do you really have iron running through your veins?", and his relationship with the other party members could be described as tepid at best.

3. Orcs

Senshi first began eating monsters when he was under the care of the orcs, because it was commonplace in their village. He also learned how to identify poisonous mushrooms, as well as other monster knowledge from the orcs.

4. Ten Years of Monster Cooking

When he first met Laios, Senshi said that he had been "researching monster cuisine for 10 years." The truth is, he couldn't remember how long it had been since the dungeon was discovered, and just made up a random number on the spot. In fact, Senshi had been living in the dungeon for over 50 years, and was already a veteran adventurer.

5. Anne

Senshi bestowed the name "Anne" upon his cherished Kelpie. However, in the end, it attacked him and he was left with nothing but bitter memories. The name Anne actually came from a horse that Senshi's old mining crew had taken along with them into the dungeon during the expedition when they got lost. The dwarves butchered and ate Anne in an effort to ward off starvation; even now, the memory of that event is likely still etched deeply within Senshi's heart.

*I thought the wording was a little awkward here, the official translation says "Senshi lost his parents when he was twenty-two — one to an accident, the other to illness." in case anyone else found it hard to understand too. Btw 22 is the equivalent of being around 8~9yo for a tallman, so he was still a young child when he lost his parents. He was 37 when he got lost in the dungeon which would be around 14 as a tallman. (Dwarven age of maturity is 40)

Mithrun Revealed in Five Keywords

1. The Canaries

The Canaries are an organization that is sent in to investigate and pacify a dungeon once it has surpassed a certain level of danger. Their original name is the "Dungeon Investigation Squad*." The squad consists of wardens sent from various esteemed houses, along with convicts who have been involved in some way with ancient magic. As a matter of fact, the convicts are not able to use magic without permission from their warden. For that reason, if the wardens end up being killed first, that leaves the convicts unable to use magic. Therefore it's a very common outcome for the convicts, without any means to protect themselves, to follow the fate of their wardens. Incidentally, their name "Canaries" comes from the bird, which is taken by miners in order to signal as quickly as possible the presence of deadly gases or other dangers. That nickname was given to them by the general public as a mocking way of describing their mission. The design of the bird on the bow of the ship is assumed to be a canary by most of the squad members, but in actuality it is a skylark, a bird that signals the advent of spring.

2. Lineage

Mithrun was born into the House of Kerensil, a famous house that is involved in investment and other such ventures. Kerensil is a famous enough family that almost any Western elf is likely to have heard their name.

3. Utaya

After being rescued from the dungeon, Mithrun spent a while on death's door, but he slowly but surely recovered enough to lead a normal life. The impetus for Mithrun's hard work was the incident that happened in Utaya. Mithrun feels that "if I had been there, we could have done something about that demon," and that thought is what gave him the strength to return to duty. A great number of squad members died in the Utaya incident, and others retired afterwards, leaving the Canaries short on members. For that reason, Mithrun was appointed as captain immediately after recovering.

4. Older Brother

Mithrun has an older brother, but he hates him quite intensely. When Mithrun was entranced by the demon and became the lord of the dungeon, the cause was the vision within a magic mirror of his brother looking happy. After Mithrun sustained his life-threatening injuries, he has visited his brother once every 5 years or so**. His brother has told him "Come back and see me whenever you want."

5. Desires

Mithrun's desires have been eaten by a demon. Though he has lost his desires, his daily routine still remains in his head, allowing him to live a normal life. However, when he enters a dungeon, his desire for food and rest have a tendency to weaken. For that reason, his squadmates or Kabru need to keep an eye on him.

*Official english translates it as "Dungeon Investigation Unit" instead of "Squad", original is "迷宮調査隊". I personally like Squad better.

**This gave me a headache for a while but as far as I can tell the original doesn't specify who visits who. EHScans assumes Mithrun visits and official english assumes his brother visits. The important part is that they meet and his brother invites him to come back home.

Kabru Revealed in Five Keywords

1. Utaya

Kabru's hometown, Utaya, was a town that flourished due to its dungeon. However, it was the monsters that poured forth from the dungeon that ultimately led to the town's ruin. Kabru was buried under rubble during the monster attack, and was discovered by the (then) vice-captain of the Canaries, Milsiril*, who then took him westward. The tragedy that befell Utaya left a great scar upon young Kabru's psyche, and now he explores dungeons with the goal of eventually exterminating all monsters and dungeons.

2. Milsiril

Former vice-captain of the Canaries. Her hobby is raising children from other races, and she ended up adopting Kabru, who had lost his mother. She's the one who trained Kabru extensively in combat techniques. During his time with Milsiril, Kabru apparently came to the realization that he "would never be able to understand long-lived races". Despite that, Kabru doesn't seem to harbor any negative sentiment toward the long-lived races.

3. Magic

Kabru is able to cast simple spells like illuminate, water walk, and healing. However, casting magic tires him out considerably, so he refrains from doing so if there is a mage in the party. He really wanted to learn illusionary spells, but it was too difficult and he eventually gave up.

4. Mother

Since Kabru's mother worked at a tavern in Utaya, he was able to get a close-up look at adventurers from an early age. His mother came from a respectable family; however, she ran away from the family she married into because they were about to kill Kabru** over the color of his eyes. Though she had a tendency to start complaining after a few drinks, she was a hard worker and did her best to raise Kabru as a single mother.

5. People Skills

Kabru excels at building friendly personal relationships with others. He's well acquainted with all the members of his dungeon party, but it looks like he's having a difficult time creating opportunities to get to know Laios. Holm commented that Kabru was the type of person that would do anything to gain someone's trust.

*The official english says Milsiril is the "current vice-captain of the canaries", unsure how they got that from the original but she was the vice captain during Utaya but she retired after.

**Official english translated this as "her husband's relations almost killed her over the color of his eyes" while EHScans says they were gonna kill Kabru. The original text is "母 親 は 良家 の 娘だったが 、嫁き先で生まれたカブルーの目の色が原因で殺されかけ、逃げ出している" I can't really tell which translation got it more accurate but either way I would assume both their lives were in danger

Chilchuck Revealed in Five Keywords

1. Encounter

Laios and Chilchuck were first introduced to each other through a member of the half-foot guild, Dandan. Though at the time Chilchuck was considering retiring from participating in dungeon expeditions due to his age, no other half-foots had the expertise necessary to accompany Laios to such a deep floor of the dungeon, so he agreed to go with them. Incidentally, the average lifespan for half-foots is around 50 years old. Since Chilchuck is the equivalent of about 50 years old by the standards of a modern human*, this would have been quite an early retirement for him. He intended to become a locksmith after quitting adventuring.

2. Weight Management

Compared to the average half-foot, Chilchuck is on the taller side. Accordingly, his body weight is greater as well, which means it's easier for him to set off traps. He's very meticulous and careful about maintaining his body weight at an acceptable level. However, after Senshi took over cooking duties for the group, he's become a hearty eater and his body weight keeps creeping up steadily.

3. Liquor

Chilchuck is a heavy drinker. Apparently his father died from excessive drinking, but Chilchuck thinks that dying while doing something you love isn't the worst way to go. Thus, he makes no effort to avoid alcohol, and heartily partook of the homebrewed beverages made by the residents of the Golden Castle.

4. Family

Chilchucks family consists of his wife and three daughters; all three of the latter are already independent. He and his wife were childhood friends, and they are the same age. She currently lives at their middle daughter's house. The panels shown bellow are** from one of Marcille's fantasies, and only Chilchuck knows the truth behind what really happened. In any case, since any lingering doubts about him cheating on his wife were cleared away, Chilchucks reputation amongst the women in the party (mainly Marcille) was mended.

5. Appearance

With their youthful faces and short stature, many half- foots are seen as adorable by others. Some of them use that to their advantage to do things like ingratiate themselves with people of other races or to commit crimes. Chilchuck thinks that though such actions may have short term benefits for the individual in question, in the long run it causes others to look down on the half-foot race as a whole, and loathes his brethren that use their appearances in that manner.

*This part causes a lot of confusion, it says he's "the equivalent of about 50 years old by the standards of a modern human". I think this comparison isn't about objective age (29 being the equivalent of 50 would be like half-foots living to be the equivalent of 86 on average, that's 10 years more than modern human average), I think it's more likely about what his life stage is compared to humans today. The average lifespan for half-foots in Dungeon Meshi is 50 so he still got 21 years left on that, which would be similar to a modern day 50yo retiring (Average global life expectancy irl is a bit over 70). (Edit: btw, converting his age to tallman using this conversion chart we get 33, which I think is more accurate than 50)

Marcille Revealed in Five Keywords

1. Family

Marcille's mother is an elf, and a mage currently employed by the royal court. Her father was a tallman who conducted historical research at the royal court. Marcille's father fell in love with her mother because she had personally experienced all the things in the history books he was studying, and he started making his moves at age 15. This continued until they married when he was 32. After he passed away of natural causes, Marcille's mother remarried to a gnome, and moved away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Incidentally, Marcille had a pet bird named Pipi when she was younger. The reason why she wants to eliminate the differences in lifespans between the races is largely due to the impact experiencing the deaths of her father and Pipi had on her at a young age.

2. Half-Elf

Born from a union between an elf and a tallman, Marcille is a mixed-blood race known as a half-elf. The reason why she kept this fact hidden from those around her was not due to an inferiority complex; rather, she felt that explaining her whole background would have been a hassle. By the way, one unique characteristic about half-elf ears is that they are slightly more rounded than elf ears.

3. Honor Student*

Marcille enrolled in the Magic Academy as a researcher. There, she conducted research behind factors causing sickness and injury; she was also involved in the creation of new healing magics. Marcille also was able to learn all the spells she used in the dungeon in a single day this required rather extensive knowledge and technique. Sadly, her party members are unable to comprehend how truly impressive this feat was.

4. Ancient Magic

The reason Marcille studied ancient magic was in order to eliminate the differences in lifespans between races. However, as ancient magic is also used to summon demons, ancient magic spells are considered taboo and its usage is heavily regulated.

5. Romance Novels

Marcille is a romantic type at heart, and is an avid fan of "The Daltian Clan"** series of romance novels. She's also constantly engrossed in the details of other people's love lives. When the party was attacked by succubi, Marcille's taste in beauty was put on full display; it's likely that the succubus' appearance was heavily influenced by her taste in romance novels.

*It's translated as Honor student in the official english but Marcille is not actually a student but a researcher (as the description says) EHScans translated it as "Academic Prodigy" but the original text is "優等生" which as far as I can tell does directly translate as "honor student", my guess is that it means she's good at studying/learning, because it would be weird to actually mean a student at the school since it's specified that she was not actually a student in chapter 57. She says "私は生徒じゃなくて研究者だからね" (not a "student/pupil" [ 生徒 ] But a researcher [ 研究者 ] )

**EHScans translates it as "D'Arcian Clan" but I decided to edit it to match the official english "Daltian Clan" just for consistency, since that's how it's referred to in this blog.

Falin Revealed in Five Keywords

1. Family

Due to the mysterious abilities she was born with, Falin was shunned by the other villagers. Cognizant of the role he must serve as village chief, her father got her out of the village by enrolling her into the magic school. Luckily for her, Falin never really noticed the fear and antipathy the other villagers held toward her. Though she understands the anger Laios harbors toward their parents for expelling her from the village, Falin hopes that one day her older brother and their parents will be able to mend the rift between them. She sees her father as someone who is clumsy with his words, and her mother as someone who is prone to bouts of worry.

2. Magic School

Falin enrolled in the magic school* at the age of 10, and ran away from it at the age of 18. Though she views it as the place where she first met Marcille and experienced some enjoyable moments, she also sees it as a place that's too stifling and strict for her liking. Falin's tendency toward wild behavior considered uncouth for young ladies her age and occasional skipping of lectures created an awkward distance between her and the other students, and she never really got used to life at the school.

3. Eyesight

Falin has been nearsighted since she was little, and has a habit of squinting when she's looking at things. Incidentally, being turned into a Chimera improved her eyesight, and she seems to have dropped her habit of squinting.

4. Romance

Though she was betrothed, she had never met her fiancee, and the arrangement was broken off after Falin enrolled in the magic academy. She was quite taken aback when Shuro abruptly asked for her hand in marriage without even having suggested that they begin a relationship first. Although she didn't have any special feelings for him, Falin harbored the thought that she might not have any more people propose to her in the future, so she considered accepting**; at the same time, she worried that accepting would be unfair toward Shuro if she didn't have any feelings for him.

5. Complexion

Falin has beautiful, pale skin, even though she doesn't really go through any particular care routine. She tends to blush bright red very quickly, and experiences some hang-ups about her appearance every time Marcille calls her "cute".
