Ich bin ein Stimmgerät

Meine Mutter ruft mich an. Sie verkauft eine Flöte über das Internet und ein Interessent hat gefragt, ob die Flöte auf 415 Hertz gestimmt ist. Die Flöte soll wohl in einem Ensemble gespielt werden und da müssen die Instrumente aufeinander abgestimmt sein, damit es nicht doof klingt.

Interessanterweise scheitert es nicht am Messen der Frequenz, sondern an Flötenkenntnis. Meine Eltern sind aus Fledermausforschungsgründen relativ gut mit Audioequipment ausgestattet (auch zum Beispiel geeignet für Spitzmausinterviews), allerdings ist unklar, welches der richtige Ton ist, der für die Messung gespielt werden soll. Der Interessent sagt, es soll ein A gespielt werden, da passt die Frequenz aber nicht. Wir sind eher Blockflötenerprobt, offensichtlich ist es aber keine Blockflöte. Ich setze mich ans Klavier und wir probieren so lange rum, bis wir rausgefunden haben, was meine Mutter spielen muss, damit ein A rauskommt.

Ich schlage aber auch vor, dass sie ja einfach mit dem Kaufinteressenten telefonieren kann, dann kann er das ja noch mal übers Telefon gegenprüfen.

Als ich im Techniktagebuchredaktionschat davon erzähle, werden gleich mehrere neue Tipps gegeben und Fragestellungen aufgeworfen. Früher zum Beispiel konnte man einfach den Telefonhörer abnehmen, denn das Freizeichen war ein Kammerton A (das Techniktagebuch berichtete). Heute gibt es kaum noch Telefone mit Freizeichen, der Trick hat sich also nicht so gut in die Gegenwart gerettet. Natürlich hätte meine Mutter auch einfach eine App benutzen können, aber für sie ist es wohl naheliegender, bei ihrer Tochter anzurufen als eine App zu installieren. Wie man wohl früher ohne Freizeichen und App Instrumente gestimmt hat, fragt Kathrin und ich sage natürlich sofort “Stimmgabel”, aber wie man wusste, wie man eine Stimmgabel richtig eicht, kann ich auch nicht sagen und Kathrin fällt in ein Stimmtechnikhistorienloch auf Wikipedia.

Eine weitere Frage ist natürlich, ob unser Klavier auch richtig gestimmt ist. Das kann ich tatsächlich einigermaßen ehrlich bejahen. Zwar müsste das Klavier tatsächlich mal wieder gestimmt werden, aber ich spiele regelmäßig zu Songs auf Spotify und da wäre es mir aufgefallen, wenn ich immer einen Halbton zu tief oder zu hoch wäre.

My @iamcreateorg shirt arrived this past weekend🥰 CREATE (Cultural Rhythm Expressing Art to Empower) started as a student organization, founded by one of my colleagues from Rutgers University @iamsanamalynda I look forward to seeing how this organization grows, as well as learning more about and from Black/Latinx artists. With quarantine a lot of artists are taking to digital media to have panels discussing the same issues as CREATE. One of the recent panels I have listened to is The Common Ground Series: Black Female Brass Players Panel. The women on that panel were: Chloe Swindler, CGS Host, LA trumpet player (DMA candidate); Brianna Nunley, trumpet (Florida State); Chadijah Craig, MI Assistant HS Band Director; Shanyse Strickland, Jazz French Horn and flute on the side (AD candidate); Theresa May, trumpet (Adjunct Faculty Cleveland); Yasmeen Richards, French Horn (MM); Madison Dorset, French Horn (BM candidate); Imani Duhe, trumpet (MM candidate); Jazzie D, tuba (MM); Robyn Smith, trombone (MM candidate); Aliyah Qualls, French Horn (BMusEd). In the flute-sphere the black women artists I’m familiar with include Valerie Coleman, Allison Loggins-Hull and Nathalie Joachim (Flutronix), and Lizzo. When I was researching for this post to find black female flute players or composers, a quick Google search AND search on flute music/artist retailer sites showed less results than I what I just listed. This is something I didn’t even realize until just this moment because of my privilege as a white woman. If I was asked to list or do a Google search on female flute players or composers that fit my physical description I would have dozens of results. Please SHARE your favorite black female flute players and composers.
