this isn't art but here are our some thoughts we have on our version of flatland (note it was made at first just for us to see so we reference some personal things that may not make sense without context)
- whole plane is a fluid substance, flatlanders in suspension
- flatlanders resemble microscopic images of cells
- flatlanders are not true lines or shapes, but rather come close to shapes with a natural organicness to them, and are selectively bred to be as close to the shapes the higher classes desire
- flatlanders have one eye, on the 'face' of what they consider the front of themselves, usually an edge, the eye is semi 'inside' the body, surrounded by what looks akin to mandible feelers, usually they are kept open, functioning like an eyelid and a mouth. when they talk it's like blinking, and when they eat they can't see for the most part. the 'mandibles' also act as both a shield and a weapon, closing to protect the eye, and forming a hard surface, sharpness depending on the shape.
- around their eye is the openings to their throat/digestive system, which form two holes on either side, similar to a frog, when eating they can swallow to push "down" (south, or whatever direction is the equivalent) their eyes, moving food "down". the eyes are solid on the sides, which face inside and can't see in that direction due to the hard coverings, which form 'teeth', along with their 'mandibles' which have 'teeth' as well.
- Flatlanders, having a harder distinction in their dimension with sight, rely primarily on sound, touch, smell, and other possible senses (haven't thought of what yet, if anything more than those senses)
- flatlanders have developed sensory feelers at their front, which work as graspers/hands/fingers, they are somewhere around the 'mandibles'
- flatlanders have hard coverings on each point/edge (forgive us we forgot what the difference is, brain broken from all the dimension stuff lmao), forming protective and defensive natural armor, while their sides are more squishy and vulnerable, but less like skin and more a hard yet fragile surface that can squish.
- flatlanders have smaller feelers all around their body, like hairs, which get longer near the corners before the armor forms.
- flatlanders have 'tails', longer clusters of feelers evolved for locomotion, or the reverse, locamotion evolved into feelers, not sure which way around.
- flatlanders are not humans, but their own species evolved on an alien world
- flatlanders here are not as of risk at injuring or killing eachother, having evolved more sensory ways to manage their environment, but still follow the extremely oppressive system in the book, because of like human and irken society being corrupt.
- flatlanders still percieve things as lines, but they have more distinguishers, colors have always existed in this world, so "chromatisits" or whatever they're called didn't exist, or at least not a movement started with colors, perhaps something else.
- their world also is covered in a fog, that compared to the book covers much more of their planet at nearly all times, with only little spaces lacking fog.
- they have unique sound processing organs, that are similar to a bat's echolocation, and structures around their 'ears' derived from feelers to help with hearing.
- "women" & "men" or the concept of gender as it is equivalent to human's doesn't exist for flatlanders, instead just focusing on the shapes for hierarchy, tho lines are still treated the same.
- in some parts of the world the shapes like lines and triangles are seen more equal, or even greater than circles.
- like earth flatland has many different cultures, although flatland is much more oppressive of individuality and lack of conformity than current society.
- flatlander's are naturally cannibals, they do not require cannibalism to survive but it may have/is considered to have benefits, so when a flatlander dies they are consumed, for families if an parent dies they are given to the children, and criminals are either provided to the community or the higher classes, we aren't sure what determines this.
- irregulars are actually typically normal for their species, but sense they deviate from their ideals of shapes they are punished, often killed.
- higher classes have developed horrific methods to shape their offspring into the correct shapes, or even adults.
- flatlander's are naturally drawn to lights and shiny things, like moths and crows.
- flatlander "females" lines, are actually pretty different than other shapes, for they are similar to siphonophores, a colony of smaller organisms making up a whole, they can split but doing this for long can lead to death. Both 'lines' and all other shapes evolved from a similar in appearance ancestor to lines, but for whatever reason the rest of the 'shapes' evolved to different forms, in a way fusing the colony into one (mostly one) entity, while lines remained the same. the reason why is unknown but given the politics of flatland it could’ve been unnaturally selected to be this way.
- lines are not any more unintelligent than other shapes, but they do think differently, as in literally they have a physically different formed brain, being a shared conjunction of individual organisms. therefor they have more limited ability to store knowledge, and may experience emotions differently.
- things like the behaviors described by lines in the book, where they are considered erratic, violent, and other such demonizing descriptors are because of how society abuses lines, creating generational trauma with their lack of rights, leading to disordered behaviors, they are not naturally any "inferior" to other shapes.
