Um…wow. I’m glad I stopped watching it. I really appreciate your commentary though. How is Brienne responding to the attention? She doesn’t seem pleased in the gifs, which makes me uncomfortable for her.
This is the sort of horribly painful reveal we’ve all come to expect from ASoIaF/GoT. It’s just been a looooong time since either has really hit home with pain like that. The show for obvious reasons and the books because there’s so damned long between them. Plus I suspect there’s a lot of bloat in there too. Do not get me started on the Greyjoy storyline.
Brienne isn’t pleased. She’s not used to this sort of attention at all. A man gawking at her in awe because of how she looks? This is completely unprecedented! Jaime only came to appreciate Brienne after he learned who she really was. He respects her as an honorable warrior. But he had to be dragged to that realization. Tormund doesn’t know anything about Brienne’s personal code as yet. He’s just openly impressed by her at face value, which is seriously a new thing for Brienne. The best she’d gotten in the past was getting some degree of respect. She has zero clue what to do with this wildling who looks at her like a goddess.
I feel bad for Brienne because that’s terribly uncomfortable. Getting that sort of devoted attention is unsettling, especially when you’re not used to getting it. She hasn’t told Tormund to stop and he’s so starstruck that he doesn’t seem to get the message that he’s weirding her out. So when they finally start actually talking, we’ll see what happens. She’ll eventually accept his devotion and then he’ll get killed off because fuck this fucking show. Ideal scenario is that she finally starts to truly see the best in herself. She’s got a very damaged self-image underneath her strong code of honor and Tormund might be the key to Brienne seeing herself in a fully positive light. After all, if he can see her that way, maybe she can see what he sees.
Full disclosure: I would love to see this work out in full, but I’m a little gun shy after the pain of this episode. I do also have some hope that Brienne will go through some major character development, since Jorah’s storyline hit the high point I’ve been waiting for tonight. (Jorah confessed his love for Dany and she gave him the equivalent in return. She wants him cured and back at her side when she rules. That’s all I was hoping for - and I think that’s about all Jorah expected too. He knows there could never be more than that. Or at least show!Jorah does.) So yeah, I’m kind of hoping that Tormund proves to be the right sort of match for Brienne, since no one else in Westeros seems to fully appreciate her. Jaime and Brienne see eye to eye now, but he was pretty damned awful to her in the beginning. I’m not sure if he’ll ever completely get past that early impression. Show!Jaime seems to have moved more toward Cersei again anyway, so at least on the show, that possibility seems to be gone. Not that Brienne has to be paired off with anyone. But she does deserve to be loved and “relied upon” is not the same thing.
