You've mentioned before that flower names were a connotation of sex work; I was wondering if it was just straight flower names or flowers in conjunction with others, because I think in the story of minglan the last character is the one for orchid?
Not every flower name is gonna be connotation for sex work but if you don't use it right it can Very Easily sound like one. I've seen The Story of Minglan and her and her sisters' names are fine.
Day four prompt from @everlarkvalentinesgifts is Flowers. This one is short and sweet. Enjoy!
“Rosemary.” Peeta said, looking over his list.
Katniss shook her head and ran her hand over her bulbous stomach.
He nodded and looked back down. “Sage?”
She wrinkled her nose.
He gave her a wicked grin as he said, “Thyme.”
“Now you’re just being ridiculous.” She snatched the paper from her husband’s hand. “You actually put down Alfalfa?”
“You said plant names.” He argued. “You never put a limit on the type of plants.”
“I was thinking more like flowers. Lily. Daisy. Rose.” Her voice wavered a little with the last one. Maybe that was a little too close.
“Dandelion?” He suggested.
She snorted. “We can’t name our child Dandelion. She might be teased.”
“She might not. And it’s significant.” He leaned over her. “Lily is pretty.”
“It is.” She combed her fingers through Peeta’s hair.
He kissed her stomach and then moved to hover over Katniss. “Lily Alfalfa Mellark, it is.”
“Stop it.” She shoved lightly at his shoulder. “She doesn’t need a middle name anyway. I don’t have one.”
“True enough. Now that we have that settled, I’ll start supper.” He got up and headed toward the kitchen singing off-key.
Katniss leaned over her belly and said softly, “Your father is so silly. But you’ll be in good hands with him.”
“You’ll be in good hands with your mom, too.” Peeta said, kissing the top of Katniss’s head and patting her stomach. “You want to go out for something? That place with the lamb stew you like so much?”
She smiled and nodded. “Yes, please.”
He handed over her shoes. It was a bit of a struggle to get into them anymore. He stooped down and helped. “Ready for the ball, Cinderella?”
She laughed. “You try to make me dance, Peeta, and I’ll use you for target practice.”
“Understood.” He hauled her to her feet. “Just a few more weeks.”
“Not soon enough.” She grumbled as she followed him out the door.
I have a Caroline here, it's a pretty name but the edges are far too sharp for me. I've found a first name already, so I can give this one away freely, but could I have a middle name? Something soft please
The edges of sharp vowels can be knives for those who it doesn’t fit. I’ll take your Caroline, with the meaning of war and warrior, and let it’s edges be crafter for someone who is prepared for a lashing and a fight
I have Malai for you. It means wreath of flowers. Wear it gently around your neck with little more weight than a breeze. Let it flow gently around you with not a mark of war or weapons', only the gentleness of a nurses hands.
