Oh boy i have opinions on this for sure and not a lot of them very positive so Bagginshield shippers beware! (ok it’s just stuff concerning canonical timelines and roles but still) But I will start with the latter.

Ok, that acorn scene in the films??? Hello??? Their smiles? The mithril scene too? And I’m going out of order here chronologically I know but also the “ I couldn’t have been more wrong” or something quote from Thorin. And their adventure that, admittedly ultimately ended in tragedy is just really good ship material (despite the death part I could have done without that part.) And the fandom output for it! So much good art and fic. (i’ve never read fic for them but I heard about a lot of supposed good ones) It’s no wonder people ship them. I love it too but there’s some issues blocking my way...

It just wouldn’t have worked I think. Thorin in the he lives AU’s, would have to remain in Erebor as king. And Bilbo would have to remain in the Shire to look after Frodo to start the events of The Lord of the Rings later on. But I kind of see a light at the end of that tunnel there in which Thorin takes trips to the Shire every now and then? Or he steps down as king (a reach I know) and spends his days with Bilbo in Rivendell. But don’t let my opinions cramp your style I’m super, super picky about ships and even canon couples in general. 

And I don’t want to be the fan art police here but it would be nice to see Bilbo with actual weight on him as hobbits are canonically fat. 

And i’m going off on a tangent here but while we’re talking about the Hobbit I’ve just been missing the early days of the fandom lately. I was never really in it since Lotr and the Silm are my main tolkien fandoms but I watched and I loved what I saw most of the time.

is there a resource or some place you learned to render? (anatomy specifically; i keep getting stuck) or a youtube channel you'd recommend? most people who record their process either don't have that step or skip it (if it's pics) and i'm struggling to teach myself, especially if reference lighting doesn't match. thank you if you answer this i know you're busy!

Not really. The simple, boring answer is: studies. Lots of them. (I’ve been really bad about posting those for the past year).

Rendering is about form description and light and values. Proko have a great video on the basics of light. You could also check out Sinix Design. Could also check out Sam Nielson’s ‘Fundamentals of Lighting’ on Schoolism, if you have the money to spare for the selfstudy course.

Personally, aside from pure line drawing studies,I do both greyscale rendering and colour studies. The former to trainjust the pure form description and values, the latter for you know… colourobservation. I avoid using the colourpicker too much when doing colour studies,the point is to train my eye to pick out colours on their own.

Asidefrom studying from photo references, I tend to do old master painter studiesevery now and then.

And Ialso do these little thumbnail studies of stuff like cinematics/animatedmovies, or other artists who I admire (I just never post those). Usually I do little notes and swatches just to observe the colour use, and if there’s anything noteworthy about the composition itself.

Maybe that was to some help? Erh, just ask a follow up question otherwise.

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

Not directly, off the top of my head. Though a lot of Masaki’s character deals with racism, cultural assimilation, and other things. Hopefully I can write more stories about those struggles!

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?

Hahahahahaha can shipping count?? But, in all seriousness, I really like fics that involve healing arcs for characters. There’s enough sadness in both fiction and reality, so it’s really nice to read or write about damaged characters getting support and help. :>

Plus it’s like free therapy except with make-believe characters.

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

Hot take: I personally don’t like the idea of Fray being the Dark Knight!WoL’s split personality. :U

The whole point of the 30-50 DRK questline was that you were dealing with trauma/unresolved stress from being the WoL and that you needed to accept all of yourself (and get some sword therapy), not just the persona everyone expects you to be. The English localization didn’t really help in this department, so I’m mostly going off of the direct translations from the original Japanese version of the questline. ( Links: [part 1] [part 2] )

17. how well does the dance animation fit their personality?

Not at all! He barely dances and he’s not very good at it, but if he had to choose it would be something slower, like a waltz.

19. do they get seasick?

Yup. Nothing vicious, his head just gets fuzzy and he feels queasy. It’s more likely to happen on a wagon though, rather than at sea.

20. what’s your favorite thing about playing them?

Cheeky! I know you know this one. Regardless, the voice acting is one big bonus. I’m horribly biased for Nolan North’s work. I’m also extremely proud of the character alone in terms of achievements (i’ve done... a lot... of work with him...). Being able to breathe life into the character has also makes it super rewarding to play them. Also he is a ranger. I love rangers.

Arya clattered into the Rising Stones, waving to various Scions hailing her as she made a beeline for Alisaie, sulking at the receptionist desk.

“C’mon. We’re going outside,” Arya declared.

Alisaie looked up warily. “…Why…?”

“Because it’s the first clear evening in a sennight and we should enjoy it.” Arya spun around and pointed at me; I had thought I had escaped notice. “You’re coming too!”

I looked at Alisaie and shrugged as I stood. “She’s got a point.”

“Does she?” Alisaie replied, the slightest hint of acid in her tone. But she stood to follow; sometimes my influence on the twins can be useful, which is likely what Arya was banking on.

Arya led us out of the Rising Stones, through the Seventh Heaven, and out into the square. It was a clear, lovely night, after several days of rain and Mor Dhona’s particular aetheric gloom. “The view from the top of the tower should be amazing,” Arya said, heading for one of the stairways leading up the walls, drawing us with her.

“I have work I could be doing,” Alisaie sighed as she climbed the stairs after Arya.

“It can wait another day, Alisaie. Even X’rhun would be closing your books and shooing you out the door.”

“And since he is not here, you are taking up that duty?” There was a hint of teasing now in Alisaie’s tone; good.

“Indeed!” Arya said cheerfully.

I let the girls banter as I found a spot on the parapet to lean on, gazing up at the nighttime sky. The moon was naught more than a sliver, a shooting star falling by, a lone cloud floating past.

I wondered if I could ever again look up at the moon without that strange, dull ache I had felt since Castrum Fluminis.

I turned my attention instead to the stars, uncountable in the sky, some near enough to connect and name as constellations. We picked them out; the Spire, the Arrow, the Spear. We gossipped about the citizens of the Toll. We bemoaned the cost of our favorite treats in the local markets, imported as they were from across the realm. We discussed magical and martial theory, and gave Arya a few pointers as she struggled to retrain her own skills.

We were, really, just three friends having a good time together–not the ones left behind to wait.

Eventually a guard wandered by on his rounds, mentioning that F’lhammin had expressed concerns about us staying out too late and catching chill, which Alisaie responded to by lighting a flame in her hand. The guard shook his head with a grin and continued on, as we laughed.

“He is right, though; we really should start to head inside; it’s near midnight,” Alisaie said, letting out a sigh. It sounded content. “…Thank you.”

Arya smiled. “Thank you, for indulging me. Both of you.” She looked at me and winked.

I nodded, and ushered both the girls down the stairs. Arya waved as she returned to her own small room, while Alisaie and I continued to the Rising Stones.

Someday soon, I hoped, X’rhun’s students would simply go stargazing for the fun of it, and not as a needed distraction.

At first, Masaki isn’t even sure what to call the feeling when he first experiences it. He lists off the symptoms in his head—suddenly quick heartbeat, confusion, sweaty palms, rising heat in face, neck, and chest—but he can’t figure out what kind of sickness it is. A fever? A cold? A stroke? But it only happens whenever he finds himself near Thancred—who seems pretty weird enough with his pickup lines. Maybe he’s allergic to terrible pickup lines?

Then the truth hits him like a charging dzo when he waves to Thancred as the latter walks into the Waking Sands. Thancred smiles and waves back, then he comes closer to Masaki. The next thing he does is out of left field—he signs. His fingers draw shapes that are instantly familiar, yet oddly foreign in their clumsiness.

Masaki doesn’t really understand until he signs again—H, E, L, L, O—

“This is how you usually communicate, yes?” Thancred asks. Does he look… shy? Is that why there’s a tinge of pink on his cheeks? He continues with a hint of pride in his voice, “I picked up a little from my travels. I figured brushing up would make you feel a little more welcome here.”

Masaki blinks hard at him. Then he nods in a jerky movement, his mind finally catching up to the present. Something warm blooms inside his chest. Thancred is being thoughtful and kind. He doesn’t need to go as far as learning sign for Masaki’s sake, but the thought is… appreciated.

He touches his hand to his chin, then gestures outward. Thancred squints for a moment.

“Thank you…?” he echoes aloud, then his eyes light up in recognition. “Oh, it’s no trouble.” Thancred smiles and gives Masaki a hearty pat on the shoulder. (Did he just squeeze his bicep before pulling away?) “Looking forward to our next mission together.”

Masaki gawks at Thancred’s retreating back with a blank face.
