48. Bon Iver - “666 ʇ”
Who doesn’t like some futuristic, existential poetry?
I’m convinced Bon Iver is ahead of his time or that he at least was at some point or another. Literally – like I honestly think he found some sort of time dilation device or prescient pathway and stumbled into the future, because I can totally see tracks like this populating the 22nd century airways (if humans make it and are still around), and Bon Iver being so inspired by the various android performers and half human metallic-laced hybrids who sung them that he brought their sounds back into the past. He may not admit it or even remember it, but I'm convinced that's what's happened.
This track serves as the perfect poster child of bionic evolution. It’s emotion mixing with machination and blurring the line between raw biology and synthetic cleanliness in the process. It’s intentionally muddled, so painstakingly so that it poses as something natural and organic and somehow manages to pull it off. It’s a constructed humanity that ends up deconstructing humanity. Sort of like buying ripped jeans. It creates its own reality. It studies what’s real and then crafts it in its own vision. It plays god, and in doing so blurs the definition of reality. It’s hard to know whether it deepens or cheapens humanity – whether we’re gaining something or losing something through its existence and it functions as evolution or devolution, or if there’s no such thing as either, and we’ve always just sort of been running in place our whole existence. Either way it blows my mind. Bravo, Bon Iver.
All my nightmares escape my head
Bar the door, please don't let them in
You were never supposed to leave
Now my head's splitting at the seams
And I don't know if I can
