The Blue Jay Gossip

I heard a song, a rusty bump; an ancient fellow from distance land points his boney fingers and said,

“When all de worl’ was water he brung de fust grit er dirt!”

I gaze upon this little bird, who screeched with a hawkish rage at the man, who wore the devil’s grin.

Indexing by Seanan McGuire

I just read an awesome book by Seanan McGuire, called Indexing, about a women in a secret agency that works to stop fairy tales from playing out in the real world. I highly recommend it. The book was first published in serial format via a Kindle program but I bought a hard copy at a convention I was at.

In some ways the books reminded me a little of "Tales of The Five Hundred Kingdoms" by Mercedes Lackey, except much darker (not that that's saying a lot, that particular series is quite light, and while Indexing does show the darker side of fairy tales I wouldn't call it very dark, just somewhat dark), with a Lewis Carrol twist and set in the modern world.

A couple of really cool things from the book that don't spoil. First off, the agents use the Aarne-Thompson Index as a way of classifying what's happening, and even talk about tale variations. Personally, as a folklore/fairytale geek this delighted me to no end. Really just the use of the ATI was awesome!

Gender flipped characters, were done well, though not necessarily in the way I expected.

Morally ambiguous "wicked" characters. 

Interesting use of fairy-tale powers.

I would also recommend her InCryptid books, which while not about fairy tales are great urban fantasies.
