The “Romantic Road”, as its English translation goes, is a scenic road that takes you through quaint towns and the Bavarian Alps. Yes, yes, the name does sound rather trite but there has got to be some truth to it if it were named as such – and there is. Having done a tiny bit of it myself on a motorbike (just a bit of it unfortunately) and much of it while running parallel on a railway track, I have to admit that the route’s charm comes not just from its good mix of countryside landscape but also its quaint towns. Consider the German Romantic Road the equivalent of Australia’s Great Ocean Road or Iceland’s Ring Road. It's one of the highlights in the region, a must-try for motorbike fanatics, and my inspiration to revisit Germany soon.
