The Paradox of Gilmore Girls and the Sopranos

In Season 6, episode 4 of the Sopranos, an episode of Gilmore Girls is playing on TV.

In Season 7, episode 17 of Gilmore Girls, Richard is wearing a tracksuit. Lorelai makes a joke about it by asking if he's having lunch with Tony Soprano.

So obviously this means that both the Sopranos and Gilmore Girls exists as televisions shows in the other's respective universe. But more alarmingly, this means that each universe has now become a televised universe of itself within their own universes. When the Gilmore Girls watch the Sopranos, they will see themselves in the show. Likewise, when Tony Soprano watches Gilmore Girls, he will witness a direct reference to himself. It's like the effect of two mirrors facing each other: the universes of the Gilmore Girls and the Sopranos are infinitely replicated all the way down.

My day in a wheelchair

(long post warning)

So I went to a theme park with my family and was quite frankly terrified for the number of slopes and walking I would have to do. With my CFS, PoTS and (currently undiagnosed) joint condition walking even for 5 mins means I am exhausted and in pain.

My parents were fairly unsupportive of me using a wheelchair but when they saw how much I struggled within the first 10 minutes, agreed it would be best for me to loan a wheelchair from the park. The staff were really nice and didn’t ask any questions! All I did was fill in some forms and put down a deposit (refunded after I brought it back).

The park was almost completely accessible however there were a lot of steep slopes (hard to wheel up, fun to zoom down!) which made it a little difficult for me to wheel myself around. (It didn’t help that I was in one of the awful hospital chairs because as any wheelchair user would know that they aren’t great for self-propelling)

Honestly, it was so freeing to be able to zoom around without worrying about using too many spoons. Yes, my shoulders and wrists now hurt but boy was it worth it. I didn’t realise quite the degree of freedom that comes with a wheelchair. My mum wasn’t very pleased that I was so happy to be ‘confined’ in a chair, but confined is the complete opposite to what I felt and being without a wheelchair today made me realise how little I can do without it.

What I did find is that in a chair, (especially in a crowded place with lots of obstacles to manoeuvre around) abled people either completely ignore you or they pay too much attention to what you’re doing and where you’re going. It’s quite intimidating being so low down with everyone towering above you. I was constantly telling my mum and brother to ‘get your hands off the chair I can push myself thank you very much.’ People tend to think that because you’re in this moving seat they suddenly own you and can take you wherever they want

I had a conversation with my mum about this today and after being fairly rude and ableist, we agreed that at if my next doctor appointment (in a few days, will update you then) I can get the doctor to agree with my need for a wheelchair I can get one for part-time use. I’m really excited at the prospect of getting my freedom back but also really nervous. What if I forget to say something important and am deemed ‘not disabled enough?’ What if the doctor agrees but insurance won’t cover it as I don’t meet their criteria? It’s going to be a long ride but hey, at least I know I can always hire a wheelchair.
