The Absolute Series has been pretty incredible. I have about three issues left with each of the five remaining from getting fully caught up.
Martian ManHunter was pretty solid. I see why fans enjoyed this so much they convinced the writers to keep it going beyond its current 6 issue set. Existential and philosophical identity crisis drug trip meets secret agent shenanigans.
Batman has been...okay. I'm really not into body horror and it's kinda been my biggest hang-up with an otherwise massive favorite in DC. I'll credit this series for The Zoo. It starts out with one hell of an intro. I'm just...really not vibing with the direction they went immediately afterward. I'll keep trying, I swear. {don't at me!}
Superman has also been a bit of a journey. The twist of his origin has been very, very good. I guess the heart of what they're trying to show with the Absolute Universe is in the...darkness of the plot? Occasionally, single issues really stand out and blow me away. Other times, I feel the rug come out from underneath my feet and I feel like it was by design? Overall... undecided. Present Day Kal-El be fine, tho so...😉
Green Lantern is really cool. Jo Mullein, y'all. Well okay I haven't seen enough of her yet but I can vibe with her. John Stewart was rocking my frick frackin world in the issue that starred his deduction and philosophical questioning. His pursuit of knowledge to the mystery of this giant green cage. I don't wanna spoil this one for ppl. I feel like I'm vibing pretty hard with the lantern corp material.
Wonder Woman is literal perfection. Every single issue takes me into a story that leaves me feeling swooned. The artwork, the lettering, the writing...wow! The mythological elements, the magic she uses, the pure kindness she exudes. Her face. Her muscles. Her eyes.
When they use the flashbacks to tell the story of young Diana on the Wild Isle I get so emotional; so happy. Her mother sees a beauty in her beyond the growing legend around her and I can't tell you how massive that is as a queer person who never felt seen; truly seen by their early life caregivers. Expectation was everything in the darker reality I had to live and in this comic series which is meant to darken the plot in DC...a witch cast out to a lifeless island in hell raises a child and not only discovers love in her...but shows her love that is some of the purest love I have ever seen. I can't read these comics when I'm physically around people lol 😭
Then there's The Flash. Let me just...
Hello, Dr. Barry Allen. 🥰 🥵
It's a great story. I don't want my favoritism for Barry to overshadow Wally. I especially enjoy the angsty plot of a teenage boy who just wanted to feel a connection to someone find himself caught in a whirlwind as his newfound powers have been nothing but a curse from the onset. His only ally? A telepathic ape companion adorably latched to his hip like a young adult sci-fi fantasy novel plot.
Just...leave me with my sweet Barry for a little bit longer. Maybe don't wait up? We'll call --I mean I'll catch up to you later. "So, Dr. Allen. Tell me more about these tachyon particles. They sound so...alien."🤭
