We were expecting rain the entire time we were in Utah. Even after we landed, we had a truncated lunch in order to hit the mountain roads before the weather rolled in. The sun eventually shone through grey skies stretching from Salt Lake City to Park City, lighting a sea of red and yellow leaves resting atop newly paved switchbacks. With the storm looming, we attacked a great stretch of road to push the new 2019 Ford Edge ST hard before the weather turned. The Edge has been revised for 2019, though this isn't an all-new model like Ford would have you believe. Changes include refreshed styling, an updated powertrain, and new standard and optional equipment, building on what was already a strong midsize contender. Still, the most notable addition for 2019 is the new Ford Performance-tuned Edge ST, a replacement for the Edge Sport and the first crossover to wear an ST badge. In the next year or two, the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion and Taurus will all disappear from our market. That will leave the Mustang as the only car left on Ford lots. With Ford going all-in on crossovers and SUVs in the U.S., it needed a vehicle to carry on the practical-performance image currently embodied by the Fiesta ST and Focus ST and RS.

First Look: The 2019 Ford Edge ST

Ford begins introducing the coveted ST brand to its SUV lineup with the unveiling of the all-new Edge ST today.

The all-new Edge ST – Ford’s first SUV to be tuned by the Ford Performance team – features the most powerful V6 engine available in its class with a specially tuned 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine pumping out 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque.

It’s also outfitted for dynamic handling with a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive with selectable traction control, an available performance brake package, and ST-tuned sport suspension.

A new Sport Mode allows drivers to experience more aggressive throttle response and shifting patterns that hold gears near redline through cornering, sharper engine braking, and a more resonant exhaust tone. Drivers can also manually shift using the steering wheel-mounted SelectShift paddle shifters while firmly positioned in unique Edge ST seating with additional bolstering.

To complement its performance abilities, Edge ST features new front and rear styling, a wide mesh grille for optimal cooling, deep side skirts and dual-exhaust outlets. Unique 21-inch wheels are available and interior design cues on the steering wheel, seat backs and scuff plates provide a subtle reminder that this five-passenger SUV is something special.
