My Fossilized Fish Collection!

Today I want to show you a few of my fossils. They're all from Solnhofen, Germany! (The same place where they found Archaeopteryx, the first feathered dinosaur!) We found and collected them between 1990 and 1995.

An Ammonite with dendrites (the plant/flower looking things! A dendrite is a superficial deposit of manganese oxide that has crystallized in a multi-branching tree-like pattern. Dendrites form as water rich in manganese and iron flows along tiny cracks between layers of limestone and other rock types. I love them so much, they're beautiful)

The square little tile has the body of an insect on it (unfortunately the wings weren't preserved). The orange dendrite looks like one of van Gogh's sunflowers, doesn't it?

A badly preserved fish fossil, we unfortunately put a clear coat over it back in the days, because it used to hang on our kitchen wall. The head has little quartz crystals in it.

This is my favourite! It's a little fishy. Every bone is visible, even the rays in the tail. It's also a positive and negative impression, from prying the limestone slab apart. Small, but fascinating!

Many genuine specimens display fine skeletal details alongside areas where parts of the fish were not fully preserved. This natural inconsistency is often a positive sign because fossilization is rarely an all-or-nothing process.

Why Does The Matrix Matter?

One of the least recognized elements of an authentic fossil is the matrix that surrounds it. The matrix is more than a simple backdrop to the fossil; it is also a part of the fossil.

An authentic fossil must look like it naturally fits into the surroundings. An authentic fossil will have consistent coloring and weathering along with the matrix. If a fish looks out of place or looks very different from the surrounding rock, then perhaps some closer inspection is in order.

When looking at fish fossils for sale, the collector might only focus on the fossil, but an experienced collector knows that the matrix can be just as important as the fish itself.

Can Preservation Patterns Reveal Authenticity?

Yes. Nature always leaves traces. Some typical qualities of authentic fossils include:

Natural skeletal positioning

A gradual transition from fossil to stone

Color changes in minerals

Compression

These are qualities that result from geological processes, not artistic manipulation. If something seems too symmetrical or too perfect for its own good, it warrants further investigation.

Why Are Fine Details Important?

Some of the finest examples of fossilized fish exhibit characteristics that are hard to forge convincingly. The fin-ray structure, scale pattern, jaw construction, and vertebral arrangement, among other things, may provide strong evidence of authenticity.

They were formed during the process of fossilization through mineral replacement or preservation of various biological elements. These patterns are usually highly complex and provide good means for identifying authentic specimens.

Considering all the above-mentioned aspects, when buying a fossil fish specimen, one should pay particular attention to such features.

How Can Provenance Increase Confidence?

Additional credibility is lent to a fossil through knowledge of its origins. Many genuine fossils will be found within known fossil formations that have long had examples of preserved fish.

Knowing details about a fossil's origins, age, and discovery site helps establish its legitimacy. Though documentation is not necessarily present in every fossil, most credible sources can be relied upon for the documentation available on a particular specimen.

What Questions Should Collectors Ask?

While evaluating fish fossils for sale, one can determine whether they are genuine by asking questions.

These include the following:

Where was the fossil unearthed?

Was the fossil restored?

What rock layer is the fossil associated with?

Does the fossil possess natural preservation?

These will help you learn a lot more about the fossil and the seller.
