The Kumiho is a shapeshifting creature of Korean legend. A nine tailed fox who has learnt to take human form, they typically transform into beautiful women to (literally) eat the hearts of unlucky young men.
There are many tales of shapeshifting, multi-tailed foxes (with nine being the desirable number) but what sets the Kumiho apart from the others is the source of their power. Each Kumiho is said to carry a bead, called a yeowoo guseul, which their power comes from. They are able to drain the energy of a human by inserting and retrieving the bead from a human's month (under the guise of kissing).
This is a risky method - if a human steals and swallows the bead they can grain incredible knowledge.

Brown Sugar stayed with the wild trio for a while. They were nice but there was one thing he couldn’t get used to. Whenever they were out doing.....whatever he couldn’t really ask....their pets all decided he was the perfect thing to lay on.
And the tiger always agreed....and they were...heavy....
What Does a Fox Say?
If it’s a gumiho, than it has a lot.
Today’s book is Wicked Fox by Kat Cho.
Quick Summary: Gu Miyoung is a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox. Every full moon she must feed off of a man’s energy to survive. One full moon, she runs across a boy named Jihoon, and she loses her fox bead, her immortal soul. As Jihoon and Miyoung develop a shaky friendship, there are dark forces and betrayal behind the scenes. Miyoung will have to choose between her immortality and Jihoon’s life.
My favorite thing about this book was the presence of Korean mythology. As a kid, I was obsessed with Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series. I read every book about mythology I could get my hands on, but the resources in the school library were limited. I had trouble finding mythology outside of Greek and Roman myths and the odd Egyptian book. That’s why the goblins and the gumihos and other figures in the book were important to me.
Moving deeper into the characters, Gu Miyoung and Jihoon balance each other nicely. She has a cooler personality, while he is more compassionate. This directly correlates with their backstories. Miyoung has only had her mother, who comes off as an ice statue; Jihoon was raised by his grandmother and family friends.
The plot moves at a steady pace and covers a lot. All action does revolve around the fox bead, but the danger to Jihoon’s life isn’t as touched upon until the second half of the book.
I enjoyed reading Wicked Fox, and I would recommend it.
