anyway, this doesn't take place at any important time. i just wanted to draw April today.

while I know learning anatomy is beneficial to me as an artist, i like the look of bendy arms, too.

Fun Fact (if it wasn't obvious) my AU is called FP11 because the timeline extends eleven years past the date the canonical timeline ends. Here, everyone dies (maybe) around 2055. I needed the extra time for worldbuilding.

I got the art book, and while I didn't really go through it properly, the tip about drawing heads was helpful.

I refused to draw that big ass arm so, if you weren't already familiar, Leo's arm is based on Guts' prosthetic from berserk. It looks cooler.

I think Casey staying with/in proximity to the Past Hamatos would be akin to joining a new classroom towards the middle of the year, and that feeling you have when you meet someone that's impossibly similar to someone you already knew, to the point that you get memories confused when thinking about either of them.

Or, even worse, moving back to a city you left in the past, and being both familiar and unfamiliar with the environment. Like, yeah, you remember that gas station from six years ago, but now the logo is different and so are the employees.

April's “…put on a show—for everyone.” refers to everyone who lived and died throughout the war, whether they fought or not.

Originally, I meant for April to say: “—Can't say I'm surprised…I knew I'd go out in a blaze of glory, just like we promised, Dee. Well, I've done my part, now it's up to you two. Godspeed, Hope.” As you can see, hardly anything has changed. But towards the end of making this I decided that April's final words would be a playful encouragement of her niblings.

“Godspeed, Hope.” — I've read a few fics where Casey is referred to as 'Hope', so I thought I'd continue that tradition here.

April's Outfit

In older posts I sorta did my own thing, but for this picture I decided to actually look at what April would have worn canonically. It's a cool fit, but I didn't like the original colors, so I toned everything down and switched some things for others.

Her concept outfit had an armor piece that I'm 95% sure is an actual shell. I decided to give her a model with the same colors as the one Casey wears.

Originally Leo was supposed to be accompanied by other people fighting different bosses in each color, but things hadn't gone how I planned.

Photo Details

This takes place during Leo's crusade against Sterling, during which her squads staged rescue operations; secured bases, supplies, and soldiers for the resistance(s); and killed the Cardinals.

That snake guy is Ramuss. He's a chimera, and the result of mutation used as mutilation. Leo, specifically, only killed Ramuss. Her brothers and sisters took care of the other Cardinals.

[See bullet 1] I positioned Leo the way I had because I wanted her to look as if she was presenting Ramuss' head to an off-camera audience. Her spot in the picture also serves to use Leo as the star of S.O.'s logo:

I'm not sure if I executed this properly, but the chains separating the colors represent the hold Sterling has held on the world. Ramuss' death—which came after the other Cardinals were wiped out—marks the end of an era. Following this event, the disestablishment of monocities and labor camps became relatively easy. Of course, there was resistance from people who benefited from Ramuss' influence (Civilians, for the most part, weren't assimilated. They were just birds that didn't know, or forgot, they were trapped).

From her placement, the circle behind Leo is meant to mimic halos in religious iconography. Her exploits—excuse me if this is disrespectful or something—created the image of Leo (and co.) being saviors in other people's eyes.

Leo's prosthesis was probably my favorite part to do. The glass-looking part on top is a tube meant to hold canisters of Purple Rain, hence the nozzles. If you look closely, the arm has a trigger. This feature is meant for other people to use the arm in the instance that Leo cannot.

More importantly...

I'm doing away with the idea that Leo has a personal grudge against Ramuss. It doesn't make sense considering I've (tried) to emphasize how large Sterling Operations is, and it's also illogical for the fact that Ramuss—big shot cult leader and religious fanatic—wouldn't be worried about Leo until the crusades begin, and his plans are being thwarted. That goes for the rest of the Cardinals, too.

Rather, it would make more sense for Leo to focus more on the “You've been exploiting yokai for centuries and enslaving them for nearly as long; screwed up the world with your weird cult; and are an active participant of the deterioration of our previous society's remains.” —part of this whole thing.

I ended up redrawing the digital versions traditionally, and then taking that drawing, putting it into ibis paint, traced/cleaned it up, and then colored it.

As much as I like my digital art style, the control I have over myself with physical art looks better and somehow takes less time.

On the bright side, I learned how to properly draw arm muscles in this pose :+D

I've settled on giving Cassandra a pixie cut. At this point, every woman I draw either has this or freeforms—it's a lifestyle.

Dialogue

This seems pretty silly for Cassandra to say, considering she's living through an active war at the end of the world. But people are still people at the end of the day, and there are times—now especially—when people ought to be assured rather than rallied.

Cassandra's approach to raising Casey (which is also being referenced here) is considerably lax compared to her own childhood. After adoption, Casey had to be coaxed from his little shell and, for a time, didn't respond well to blatant aggression, no matter how positive. In response, Cassandra had to go about their relationship differently than she would with a Brownie Scout, or any other child of the Resistance.

Background

Anyway, the main focus of this picture is actually the little Cassandra on the left. Her words, though originally depicted as her own journal entry, are a reflection of growth during her mysterious time away from the Hamatos.

I wanted Cassandra to, at some point, realize she could take a different approach to life, though I wasn't sure how to articulate this.

There were times throughout Best Of Siblings And Best Of Men where I worried that I was watering down Cassandra's character or, even worse, removing parts of her personality to suit the story—something I've been attempting to avoid since I started this AU.

Extra

If you haven't noticed, Cassandra's design is slightly different from Naginata. I got rid of the pouches on her belt and cut her hair.

Casey's hair was weirdly blocky until ~14, when it got flat overnight.

This picture took me fifteen hours. Most of those hours were spent on Cassandra's face. Eventually I gave up, and that seemed to work.

No matter what Kid-Casey's orientation is, his hair will always be seen in 3/4 view—like Mickey Mouse.

Kid-Casey's outfit is loosely based on Kid Goku's:

Cassandra is pink. Casey is sky blue.
