while I know learning anatomy is beneficial to me as an artist, i like the look of bendy arms, too.

Fun Fact (if it wasn't obvious) my AU is called FP11 because the timeline extends eleven years past the date the canonical timeline ends. Here, everyone dies (maybe) around 2055. I needed the extra time for worldbuilding.

I got the art book, and while I didn't really go through it properly, the tip about drawing heads was helpful.

I refused to draw that big ass arm so, if you weren't already familiar, Leo's arm is based on Guts' prosthetic from berserk. It looks cooler.

I think Casey staying with/in proximity to the Past Hamatos would be akin to joining a new classroom towards the middle of the year, and that feeling you have when you meet someone that's impossibly similar to someone you already knew, to the point that you get memories confused when thinking about either of them.

Or, even worse, moving back to a city you left in the past, and being both familiar and unfamiliar with the environment. Like, yeah, you remember that gas station from six years ago, but now the logo is different and so are the employees.

I've settled on giving Cassandra a pixie cut. At this point, every woman I draw either has this or freeforms—it's a lifestyle.

Dialogue

This seems pretty silly for Cassandra to say, considering she's living through an active war at the end of the world. But people are still people at the end of the day, and there are times—now especially—when people ought to be assured rather than rallied.

Cassandra's approach to raising Casey (which is also being referenced here) is considerably lax compared to her own childhood. After adoption, Casey had to be coaxed from his little shell and, for a time, didn't respond well to blatant aggression, no matter how positive. In response, Cassandra had to go about their relationship differently than she would with a Brownie Scout, or any other child of the Resistance.

Background

Anyway, the main focus of this picture is actually the little Cassandra on the left. Her words, though originally depicted as her own journal entry, are a reflection of growth during her mysterious time away from the Hamatos.

I wanted Cassandra to, at some point, realize she could take a different approach to life, though I wasn't sure how to articulate this.

There were times throughout Best Of Siblings And Best Of Men where I worried that I was watering down Cassandra's character or, even worse, removing parts of her personality to suit the story—something I've been attempting to avoid since I started this AU.

Extra

If you haven't noticed, Cassandra's design is slightly different from Naginata. I got rid of the pouches on her belt and cut her hair.

Casey's hair was weirdly blocky until ~14, when it got flat overnight.

This picture took me fifteen hours. Most of those hours were spent on Cassandra's face. Eventually I gave up, and that seemed to work.

No matter what Kid-Casey's orientation is, his hair will always be seen in 3/4 view—like Mickey Mouse.

Kid-Casey's outfit is loosely based on Kid Goku's:

'Tello and Titan

In the back of his mind, Donnie can't help but draw comparisons between Titan and S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. To save himself the hurt, Donnie persistently refers to Titan as an 'it'.

Remember Project #MetalArmy? I did something with it! Anyway, this was a five-year project that began in 2044 and ended in 2049 following Donatello's death. In that span of time, thirteen mecha were made. The first, Titan, is who we see in the picture.

Mecha are worked by specialty pilots. The faction itself is an offshoot of OFFENCE that operates under C.E.M.'s instruction.

Background Info

There are two categories of pilots and, in turn, mecha.

Combat: Mobile soldiers only.

Mobilize against larger kraang (i.e.: Angels), hordes, and machinery.

Combat pilots have been trained to operate mecha as weapons. Compared to Exploration pilots their knowledge is incredibly limited.

Take orders from Cassandra and Leonardo.

Exploration: pretty much anyone who isn't a child.

Traverse difficult and dangerous terrain for scouting and construction missions.

Occasionally traveled to distant rebellions and, rarely, overseas continents.

Act as rescuers/recovery, searching for MIA individuals and equipment lost during battle.

Pilots, their care team, mechanics, cooks, and custodians live away from Hamato HQ at specialized bases simply called Garages. Because mecha emit large amounts of radiation, pilots and those in frequent contact with them must be isolated from the greater population.

Contact between HQ and Garages were limited to necessary interactions only: the delivery of toiletries, food, medicine, and materials. Should a Garage crewman return to HQ, they're placed in quarantine for six -- eight weeks to limit the possibility of an epidemic.

Following Titan, twelve more mech were made. Each one fell into one or more sub-categories: Militant; Ocean Strider; High-flyer; or Sentient.

Pilots were given specialty bracers with their own comm system.

Unlike most of the resistance, these devices were made to do the absolute bare minimum. With only a radio, limited camera, and monotone display, a pilot's bracer was somehow even more durable than its 'cousins'.

Later editions of specialty bracers included holographic projectors.

There is no on/off function. They are powered by hibisium.

Bracers also act as trackers and health monitors.

In order to contact specific people, a pilot will turn to radio switch to 'on', and proceed to select a pathway (seen on the right →).

From top–down, the blue button is for Administration. There are two admins that pilots report to, the first being coordinators who resided at HQ or Garages. As you'd imagine, these individuals are responsible for leading mech-suit in-quests and ensuring objectives are met.

In the early years of Project #MetalArmy, coordinators directed from afar. As the rebellions number of mecha grew, coordinators were able to lead while being alongside their teams.

Next is the green button. This directs Pilots to each other, acting as both a communication channel and a tracker. Upon selecting this button, a series of routes appear on the mecha's GPS system (buncha math stuff, cuz no satellites) that lead to other pilots.

Lastly, the red button. This is an SOS signal that, once received by Garages, are automatically redirected to HQ, where either Donatello, Cassandra, or Leonardo would respond.

Each button has braille: 1 for Administration, 2 for Pilots, 3 for Distress.

I had trouble with Titan's head, but I got it eventually.

You wouldn't believe all the stuff I had to do before actually drawing Donnie and Titan together. Three of these pictures were done ~two weeks ago, and this morning I decided to redo the bracer, as I initially colored to sketch and left it at that.

This wasn't particularly hard to do, but I'm glad I waited so long. Every drawing I do helps me later on, and if you noticed, you'll see that the window is pretty similar to the portal from Hope. Speaking of, the markings on the window is a Window-way Spell from Witch Hat Atelier. I mentioned before that the resistances utilize spells to make things easier, and that window-way spells allow natural lighting and ventilation without leading enemies directly to their bases. They also serve as versatile get-aways that lead to different locations across the Americas.

By the way, Titan's design is heavily based on the Giant Mech from The Purple Game.

Death In Detail | Cassandra Jones

Dialogue

Background Information

The prosperous years of the Warring Era had since come to an end. And now, both sides of the war were feeling the effects of a decades-long conflict. Landfills and destroyed cities didn't have much left to offer, which meant any new materials had to be taken from the enemy. And currently, the Hamato Resistance were in possession of a significant amount of resources—Hibisium, specifically.

Around this time, Project #MetalArmy officially came to an end. With Donatello dead, Engineering was scrambling for a new director, as well relocating their mecha. Offence was tasked with recovering fallen soldiers.

A number of soldiers that were nearby during GGS became sick from radiation, smoke inhalation, etc. GGS was a terrible event.

The Mission

CEM received an anonymous tip claiming a nursing home in Niagara Falls had a bunch of air purifiers (among other valuable resources) sitting around. Usually, more caution is excerpted for shady/unfamiliar info brokers, but no one could come up with a good reason to not go.

And so, a decent team of ninety soldiers made up Cassandra's vanguard. Their goal was to get the aforementioned purifiers, plus a sizable list of other stuff like blankets, clothes, medical supplies, and…books.

For a time, the missing went as expected. Most of their objectives were met, and the vanguard was on track to be finished before nightfall.

Then, the building started to come alive. Either groups were transported (forbidden) past a certain point, or running through increasingly complicated mazes, or something equally frustrating. In their distraction, no one noticed three of their own were gone.

Three hostages were taken by surprise, including Cassandra. They were held at a different location for hours, and during that time the POWs were interrogated on seemingly random information: how often they drive, were they familiar with the creation of artificial energy, and more. Ultimately, those questions didn't matter, as the enemy moved on to questions about HQ's security, defense measures, armories—anything that could help later on.

The other two gave up what information they could, while Cassandra stood strong and kept quiet.

Before the agents retreated, one shot Cassandra through her heart, killing her near-instantly. She was declared dead at the scene by the rescue team's medics.

Extra

Fun Fact: Did you know D&S is the first department to receive mission reports? One of April's jobs is to oversee specific mission reports before they're sent to the General.

Hibisium is crystal originating from the D.A.Y. It holds a near infinite amount of energy, and is also really, really radioactive. These were used in Project #MetalArmy to power the mech suits indefinitely.

I like the part where April is figuratively being strangled by the mess that is the situation and her own feelings in and after the moment.

“Petty and dull with the nerve to doubt her…” refers to Cassandra's concerns about taking hints from questionable people. She wasn't outright dismissed, but by the time she voiced her opinion everyone else was already on board.

The surviving POWs were young recruits. They were suspended from Offense for five months to heal, and were given a second chance by Leonardo herself.

April and Cassandra never had a romance, but they were closer than best friends.

After Cassandra's death, the other's stepped up to take care more hands-on care of Casey. April wasn't his mom, nor did she try to be. But, she was close enough.

Cass' death was originally going to be hypovolemic shock (bleeding to death), but I changed my mind on how it would happen. If you visit this post, you'll notice Cassandra at the top left with multiple lacerations across her body—I planned for her death to be slow. A gunshot wound felt more fitting: there's a low likelihood of Cassandra surviving long enough to tell her rescuers what S.O. wanted, or what direction they went.
