There was something in her bedroom. Giselle was barely awake, but she could feel it. She slowly opened her eyes to see a face in the darkness that she had not seen in eleven years. Nearly forty years since she had seen her that young. Her weak heart started beating faster. 

“Hello Francesca.”

Her dead lover smiled. “Hello Giselle.”

Giselle swallowed, sitting up. “...I suppose the Grim Reaper is bound to appear any moment if you’re here. Is it really time? I was hoping I’d have the summer to help Kit settle in. It hasn’t even been two weeks.”

“You’ve been grooming Kit to be your successor since he was eight. He’ll be just fine. And as for Death… Well, they said I could be the one to do it. If you’re fine with that, of course.”

“Perfectly fine.” She patted her chest. “Can’t believe my heart’s lasted this long. Every doctor says it’s a miracle. God, poor Byron. He’s the last of our siblings. …But it’ll be nice to see Edeline and Alexander again. And everyone else I’ve lost. Time to go then, darling?”

Francesca nodded.

With a hefty sigh, Giselle stood to her feet, feeling as if decades were leaving her old and worn body. She felt refreshed and young. Glancing at her hands, she saw there were no wrinkles, no spots. She was wearing the old lavender dress she’d worn often when she was in her twenties. Francesca wrapped her arms around her waist, and for the first time in eleven years, Giselle kissed her lover on the lips, feeling whole once again. After what seemed like seconds and hours simultaneously, she parted, her eyes drifting to the bed. Her body looked so old, so frail, sinking into the mattress. 

She hated that Kit would be the one to find her in the morning. Death plagued their family, but she knew she could do nothing about it. She sighed, staring at her dead body.

“Goodbye,” she whispered.

Miss Pace with lover of almost thirty-five years Giselle Walsh, 1950.

Francesca Ka Ling Pace was born in British Hong Kong to British missionary Francis Pace and native Hong Konger Liang Pace (Nee. Lee). Shortly after her birth, her father returned to Mainland China to continue missionary work where he was eventually murdered in the Boxer Rebellion, leaving her with her mentally unstable mother, who took her own life when Francesca was ten. She was adopted by her father's aunt Rosamond Pace, an older spinster, bringing her to Newcrest England, where she befriended a young Giselle Walsh, the duo quickly becoming inseparable.

Francesca and Giselle's relationship eventually turned romantic when they were teenagers and remained together ever since. After World War I, the girls moved to London to pursue Giselle's dream of becoming a fashion designer, and together the girls opened up a fashion house with Francesca as CFO and co-founder, where they quickly gained popularity.

During the Second World War, Francesca became a nurse to support the war effort, eventually having her "niece" Lydia join her after she and Giselle helped her and Giselle's nephew Lord Simon-Elliot elope in secret. While they lost their home and business during the Blitz, their new building rivaled the most popular houses globally. After the war, Walsh Fashion House once more enjoyed the popularity it had in the decades before as a place of premier and high-end fashion.

Very good with numbers and business, Francesca managed to carve out a successful career in light of being an Asian woman in the early 20th century, embracing both her English and Hong Konger heritage with pride. Open with her sexuality and preference for wearing pants, she navigated the world as a wealthy modern woman, always looking toward the future before her early death from heart cancer.

Francesca is survived by her partner Giselle, cousin Xiufang, cousin-in-law Henry, cousin's daughter Lydia, and her partner's brother, wife, and their children.

Early April 1945, Henford-on-Bagley, England

The shiva was for family only. They saw no other visitors after the funeral. The funeral had been in the same London synagogue where Byron and Eleora had married and where Simon-Elliot had his bar mitzvah. Grief wracked the home, from a young widow crying for a husband who’d never come home, grandparents forced to bury their eldest grandson, to siblings distraught over the loss of a brother. 

Kit and Ludivine were far too young to understand what was happening, playing near where adults stood, recognizing the sorrow but too young to comprehend or act on it. Kit knew it was something about his brother, that he wasn’t coming home. He had never experienced death before, but he knew that surely his brother wouldn’t want something like this to say goodbye. And of course, a four-year-old boy—the spare—was now due to inherit his father’s title.

There was anger, sorrow, and frustration in equal measure. Giselle and Francesca had helped the couple elope when neither family supported the match. They could not lash out to a grieving wife, but to the couple who’d witnessed the wedding? Byron felt betrayed by his sister. Eleora seemed more at peace with it, and her anger was more directed by the thought of never seeing her son again, and how she wished Simon-Elliot and Lydia could’ve married in a far happier and more open setting.

Although Byron had not truly celebrated Christmas since marrying Eleora, the couple had decided to have a Jewish-Christian mash-up of the holidays, knowing that this Christmas would likely be Francesca’s last, and they didn’t want Carl to feel awkward, though he insisted that he wouldn’t mind.  

“You need to tell your parents, Amalia.”

Amalia paced around her bedroom. “I know, I know! But I can’t just go up to them and tell them I’m pregnant!”

“You’re starting to show. Big skirts and dresses won’t hide it. Since you didn’t want an abortion, you’re having the baby whether you like it or not.”

“And if I’d gotten caught? You know it’s illegal and dangerous. I’m not having this argument with you again.”

Miranda sighed. “Sorry. It’s just… it’s not a secret you can keep. Not without help. If I were a man, maybe this would be different, but I’m not. You’re four months pregnant, and if it weren’t winter, you couldn’t get away with being bundled in clothes and poofy dresses in the evenings. They love you. You’re their darling daughter.”

Eleora and Byron were drinking wine in the library when Miranda and Amalia entered the room. Music played faintly on the radio, and the married couple watched the snowfall. The room felt so romantic that Miranda almost felt guilty for the reason they were in there.

“Hello, girls,” Eleora greeted. “Do you want a glass of wine?” 

“Oh, no thank you, Aunt Eleora. We, well, Amalia needs to talk to the both of you.”

Amalia flashed her a look of panic. You’re leaving me alone?! 

Byron set down his wine. “What is it, Amalia? You look pale.”

“Let’s sit down,” she answered, her voice an octave higher than usual.

Eleora sat in one of the armchairs, Byron standing next to her and Amalia sat in the adjacent armchair. She watched as Miranda left the room, but not before giving a look of reassurance. It didn’t help.

“Has something happened at university?” Eleora asked. “Are you failing?”

“No, it’s not that.” She swallowed. “You’re going to hate me when I tell you.”

“You know that’s not true,” Byron insisted.

“Your father and I love you dearly.”

Amalia wrapped her arms around her dress and her stomach. She looked away from her parents, unable to tell them while looking them in the eye. “I’m pregnant.”

As the paramour of a fashion designer, Francesca always wears the latest styles. Additionally, as a full-time working woman, she prefers practicality over style, and like many modern women of the 1930s, she has added more pants to her wardrobe. While it was still considered scandalous to wear pants in public, Francesca couldn't care less. She's also taken a larger interest in her Hong Konger heritage since the Crash, relearning the language and the culture, dressing as such. As always I aim for a cunty lesbian girlboss look for her lol.

February 1946, London, England

From the ashes of their old home came their new one. It was larger, grander, and emphasized glamour. Like their old home, there was an apartment on top of the store and studio, but the store now stood two stories, their little penthouse on the third.  

“Are you sure we can afford this, Francesca?”

“Of course we can. I did the numbers twenty times. And if we want to be a high-end fashion house again, we need to look the part. The first world war changed fashion. So will this one.”

“I swear, in another life you were an accountant.”

She chuckled.

“I still can’t believe the war’s finally over,” Giselle admitted. “I got so used to being in the auxiliary forces, I think I’ve forgotten what it means to be a fashion designer.”

“I still wake up thinking I need to rush for my shift at the hospital.” She shuddered. “I will never change another bandage in my life.”

“What if I hurt myself?”

“Then I’m afraid you’ll have to do it yourself.”

Giselle laughed, looking at the new Walsh Fashion House. “Christ, I bloody love you, Francesca.”

The sound of an old Leroy Carr record filled the apartment, and the women slow-danced in their robes and nightgowns, for the first time in a long time without a single care or worry. There was no looming threat of bombs, no fears of losing loved ones, and while they mourned their losses, there was hope that Giselle had not experienced in a long time. They were picking up the pieces of their old life and moving on with the new. 

“I got a telegram from Lydia today,” Francesca whispered to the lull of the blues music. “She’s left for America. She wants a fresh start. I don’t blame her.”

“Did she say where?”

She shook her head. “I suspect she doesn’t want to be found for a good long while. When she’s ready, she knows where we live. I feel for Xiufang and Henry, but that is the swing of things.”

Francesca wrapped her arms around Giselle’s waist. “Do you think the next few years will be anything like the end of the Great War?”

The brunette scoffed. “God, no. No one throws drug-fueled parties anymore. I think it will be rather the opposite, and it worries me.”

“As long as we have each other… and an acclamation of wealth.” She turned around and kissed Giselle gently.

Giselle responded passionately, heat filling her body. “I think we need to christen our new bedroom,” she whispered, her fingers running down her lover’s hips and sides. 

Francesca smirked. “I couldn’t agree more.”

They were much older than the first time they had taken their clothes and made love to one another, but it was just as nerve-wracking and exciting, though now they were experienced, in tune with the languages their bodies spoke in the thralls of passion. Francesca had been her first everything, and Giselle was determined that she would be her last.
