When DPNs Go Flying, Try A French Knitter

This tool also goes by knitting dolly, and sometimes is given a small face, or spool loom, and its purpose is to make knitted cording, or I-cord. Larger looms of the same kind can be used to make socks, hats, etc. And if you imagine even larger automated ones, you have the idea how they first industrialized knitting in the round.

You can make knitted cords with double-pointed needles, but since that usually ends with one slipping out of my hands and under the sofa, my husband hunting for it, and a lot of anxiety, I now use this for cords, and the magic loop for anything bigger.

My dolly came with a long pin or peg, but I ended up using a crochet hook. You wind the yarn around the pegs once, then carry the yarn around the outside from peg to peg, slipping the last stitch over the yarn, making a new one. This was the first time I used one and after a few false starts, I made this cord. You can see the cord is neatly made and shows off the hand-dyed yarn nice. This yarn I call Winter Squashed.

If you are wanting to learn to make things with string and knitting or crochet seem complicated consider a knitting spool, also known as a French knitter or knitting Nancy.

There is only one stitch, you can use any sort of string/wire/filament, and you get instant gratification with a rope coming out of the end.

So here’s what my bro got me for Christmas, it’s the most amazing toy/gadget which allows me to knit i-cord at about 10x the speed it would take to hand-knit it. It’s addictive

This time I strung beads on my floss first, then every other stitch I would slide a bead into place....a lot easier than I anticipated and it gives the knit a great weight!!!
