US Open 2013: news from the Frenchies
After Adrian Mannarino lost in the 3d round (08.31) to Roger Federer, there are only 2 Frenchies still standing on the men's event: Richard Gasquet, who after his win (w.o) to Tursunov is already in the round of 16, and Julien Benneteau who won against fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the second round and will face Berdych in the 3d to possibly join Gasquet in the round of 16.
In the absence of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon, the French contingent did not arrive in strong form to the Open.
First round losses included:
· Benoit Paire (to Bogomolov)
· Nicolas Mahut (to Youzhny)
· Michael Llodra (to Andy Murray)
· Paul-Henri Mathieu (to Tommy Haas)
· Florent Serra (to Feliciano Lopez)
· Kenny de Schepper (to Klahn)
· Albano Olivetti (to Robert)
Second round losses included:
· Gael Monfils (to Isner)
· Guillaume Rufin (to Tursunov)
· Stephane Robert (to Gasquet)
· Edouard Roger-Vasselin (to Kohlshreiber)
· Jeremy Chardy (to Benneteau)
Third round losses: Adrian Mannarino (to Federer).
We hope that Benneteau will pull off a win against Berdych (a tough opponent!) and join Gasquet in the 1/8th. Gasquet has had a relatively comfortable draw until now but the real test will be his match against Milos Raonic in the round of 16. So far, the most impressive win we saw on the French side was that of Mannarino (ATP rank 63) against Sam Querrey (ranked 31); never easy to play an American at the US Open. Well done Adrian!
On the women's side, Alize Cornet reached the 3d round where she fell to Victoria Azarenka, after taking the first set.
