Fubar II

3/5 - Blu-Ray - Film #37 of 2012

Fubar II marks the return of "bangers" Dean and Terry. If you have not seen Fubar (2002) I highly recommend you seek it out, it's a very funny mockumentary of 2 "bangers" from Alberta, featuring them shotgunning beers, partying, camping and dropping pearls of wisdom left and right.

If Fubar II were a TV show, this is the episode in which the franchise jumps the shark. I switched Fubar II off 8 minutes into the film, but Brett Gallman (@bg_ohthehorror) convinced me to turn it back on and I'm glad I did!

Fubar II abandons the mockumentary style, but has the same feel. Shots are intimate and it feels like we're a fly on the wall for their often funny and sometimes tragic lives.

Dean and Terry move to "The Mac" (Fort McMurray) to pursue work with Tron's oil patch crew. They land jobs, make a lot of money in a short period of time, spend money on booze, strippers and compulsive merchandise/item purchases.

Much like Fubar, this movie is not without it's curve balls and tragedy. The serious issues are handled with a light heart and often resulting in a funny resolution. I thought the third act slowed a bit, but as Brett mentioned Fubar II morphs into another very cool movie genre.

By the end I was glad to see Dean and Terry again, this sequel felt unnecessary and lacked the magic I felt while discovering Fubar all those years ago. If you enjoyed Fubar, this is a worthy follow-up with many laughs.
