“Happiness, you belong to me!”
by Paolo Aragona
We were incredibly fortunate to host yet another amazing artist for a master class this past Wednesday. The lovely Dana Wilson took time out of her busy schedule to share her art and wisdom with us and teach her piece to “Happiness” by Sam Sparro.
Groovin it out
Despite a dreary, rain-soaked evening in NYC, performing such feel-good choreography lifted everyone’s spirits. Whatever moods were reflected by the bleak weather were left at the door, as it was all smiles in the studio that night. The energy was electric. Dana even admitted she was struggling to not let the weather get to her, and that everyone’s energy had her feeling wired.
Our lovely teacher
After class, we gathered in a circle for a little Q&A– asking Dana for her insights on the industry and her journey to where she is now. Eager to learn– dancers laughed, smiled, and listened intently as she recounted stories of pivotal moments in her dance career as well as the importance of "coming into your own" and embracing who you are as a dancer. Sticking around for a bit after class, she watched us perform our set and offered us some great feedback.
Story time with Dana Wilson
Dana Wilson is a truly inspirational woman, not only as a dancer and choreographer, but as a human being– and we hope to have her back for another class soon!
Stay tuned for updates on our next company and master classes!
Kicking Into OVRDRV
by Paolo Aragona
Marking our second performance in Boston since our debut at ELEMENTS in February, we showcased last Saturday at the OVRDRV 3.0 Bboy Jam, hosted by Unofficial Project , Bulletproof Funk, and The Supply at Boston University. Our journey to Beantown this time around was luckily without any bus complications (rolls eyes at Greyhound, but smiles fondly at Bolt Bus).
To cater to the cypher format of the jam, our set was reimagined with 360 degree staging– giving all members of the audience a show and challenging us to operate more dynamically as a group. With the goal of the jam to bridge the gap between the different styles within the community, emcee Danny Infamous reminded everyone that, “It’s not about one style, it’s about all styles.” With dancers of all different backgrounds together in celebration through a common love for expression, that sense of community was surely felt. For some dancers on Funks, it was a return to the freestyle roots that got them into dancing in the first place.
Bboys from NYC, Jersey, Boston, Connecticut, and Philly came to rep for their city

Our very own talented co-directors Leslie Hubilla and Michael Esteban taught at the OVRDRV workshops the following Sunday, sharing a smooth collabo piece to “Sweet Life” by Frank Ocean. Derrick Labeija of the House of Labeija, an icon in the vogue scene, also taught that day, dropping some knowledge on an enthusiastic and energetic room of dancers.

From the consumption of double bacon cheeseburgers 30 minutes before tech rehearsal, intermittent group naps in the dressing room, constant streams of laughter from nonsensical, but brilliant jokes, freestyle cypher ratchetfests, awkward strangers, interesting post-event festivities, and a homemade quiche, light salad, and sliced melon breakfast, our weekend in Boston was nothing short of a good time.

And to our extremely gracious and wonderful hosts, Unofficial Project, THANK YOU for your hospitality! You all went above and beyond what we could have ever expected. It was a pleasure sharing the floor and getting to know you all. We hope to collaborate on a project again in the future!
