Mice Tea (Cozy Bisexual Transformation Dating Sim)
So recently I wrote a pretty bad essay about women in FVNs that I ultimately decided to delete. I really wanted to make an essay on that topic and I binge-wrote most of one before realizing I didn't really know what I wanted to say about it, but I was in a bad headspace and I didn't want to give up on something I had spent so much time on and finished it mostly to not feel like I wasted my time. But I did get something out of it. The dev team for one of the FVNs I mentioned reached out to me and offered to let me play their game for free. So that basically meant I got $15 from that essay. So thank you Cinnamon Switch. Now I can buy an extra pack of Mexican apple soda.
I was admittedly hesitant, because if I played the game and hated it, that meant they would have wasted their time on me. Fortunately, I didn't hate it. I actually really liked it.
Mice Tea is about Margaret, a disgruntled worker at an independent book store with dreams of running her own reading café. One day, she finds a mysterious package of Japanese tea at her friend's tea shop and after a night of heavy drinking, she brews the tea to treat her hangover. The tea has some good initial effects like heightening her physical and mental capabilities, so thinking it's useful, she takes the rest of the pot to work, but it eventually turns her into a mouse and makes her curvier. This is also a dating sim, but what's interesting is there's not a drop-down menu asking who you want to date. It works like this. If Margaret drinks a concentrated dose the morning after her drunk escapades, the tea will immediately turn her into a mouse and she'll call the friend that owns the tea shop she got it from, Gavin, and then you go down his route. If she drinks a more moderate dose, she goes to work and after drinking more, she starts getting hornier as she transforms. If she takes the opportunity to masturbate in the back, she barely avoids getting caught by her manager, Felix, and in her frazzled state accidentally lets him take her thermos of tea. After work, she realizes Felix also forgot his phone. If she decides to try to find him, she'll find the tea has turned him into a woman and continue following him for his route. If she decides she'll give his phone back the next day, she'll go home and find her college friend, Julie, using her stove to cook dinner for herself and in the process accidentally gives Julie some of her tea, which transforms her and from that point you continue on her route. However, if you rewind back to work and stop Margaret from masturbating, she's clear headed enough to prevent Felix from forgetting his phone and accidentally drinking her tea and so gets invited to go out by her co worker Sylvia and then she drinks the tea later on, starting her route. All this to compliment the writing for really trying to think outside of the box. This also makes the dating sim aspect feel more like consequences of the story.
As of writing this, I've only played through Felix's and some of Julie's and Sylvia's routes, but it's really good. The characters are charming and they all have interesting drama. I really liked Felix's route as it plays with gender transformation as not just a kink but a method of character analysis. They really explore what it feels like to be female. We even get multiple perspectives as Gavin later on gets transformed, but it's when you do that it clicks what's going on for Felix. He feels surprisingly comfortable being a woman, but then when you get to Gavin, he's also surprisingly comfortable but he describes it more as though he feels like he's in a nice hotel room while for Felix, it almost feels like a new home. That's when it makes sense that for Felix, "Felicia" might not be a temporary persona he wants to have until they figure out a solution for the tea. Honestly, it's a really interesting way to play out a transition narrative. But there's definitely more to his route than that so please don't think I spoiled his route.
And while I haven't played through much of the other routes, they seem interesting too. For example, in Julie's route, she figures out how to reverse the tea's effects early on by using her ability to read Chinese and use Google translate to figure out the instructions on the box. So more of that route gets to be more about playing around with the tea rather than interrogating identity issues, but it still promises to have entertaining and interesting drama outside of that which it seems like it does.
I really like this game and I hope I'll get to see many more like it. Until then, keep on yiffing
