Zephyr looking up to momma <3
While Zephyr sort of finds her own way and marches to the beat of her own drum, like her father, do you imagine Nuffink is a little bit more grounded and typical Viking, like his mother? And if so, I’d imagine he takes a pretty big shine to his Uncle Eret. :)
For me, it’s a little bit more mix and match. Zephyr rebels in her own way, refusing braids, cutting her hair, shedding social norms. She’s intelligent, always with her journals and notes, though she has a more technical, focused mind—an attribute of her mother with her father’s influence, some might say—and she applies it to the village. Happily, I might add. Hiccup’s ingenuity and Astrid’s drive that made them the power couple Berk needed for the new era are both found in Zephyr. That’s what makes her a great chief later on.
Nuffink certainly has the Viking Vibe with his boundless energy and enjoyment of athletics. As a child he was everywhere, often seen tripping over his own feet scrambling to some place or another (particularly entertaining when his feet were growing faster than his body for a time). Eret and Astrid were certainly the two that had him the most as he was always demanding. Demanding playtime. Demanding training. He ran around with his little wooden sword stabbing people in the kneecaps before darting away. Gobber and his wooden leg was a particular favorite target of his. Those two took it upon themselves to try and hone that a little into something useful.
But grounded? Nuffink has an imagination, a whimsy, much like his father. He has energy, energy he focused into fighting and playing, but also into creativity. Like I said in this headcanon: creativity + athletics made him a Bashyball champion. Afterall, Bashyball is a game of very few rules, and it usually takes “something crazy” to win it ;)
Do you think either the Hiccstrid kids would get the inventing skills their dad had? Like I know you think Zephyr is a bit of a smart girl. Do you think she'd invent stuff.
Yes! I’ve headcanoned it several times in fact! Mostly here.
Zephyr is definitely the one who took to engineering. Granted, I also have the Nuffink’s the most creative one, but he doesn’t have the focus and analytical skills his sister has.
I like to think both children were expected to work in the forge (good foundation, etc) but Zephyr certainly took to it more than her brother. She likes to make improvements on things that already exist; sometimes she’ll even take a wild idea of her brother’s and try and make it happen... starting with little mechanical flying toys to things like new ways to plow fields. She’s the one that carries on the tradition of maintaining Toothless’s tailfin, making those improvements as she sees fit.
“There were dragons when I was a boy...”
I’s a bit late to the party, but seeing baby Hiccup got me inspired to draw Hiccup’s baby. i think it’d be great if all these voice-overs of Hiccup speaking before/after each film were revealed to be him speaking to his child/grand-child.
My fanbaby Jόra Haddock
Hey, do you have any headcanons about the possibility of Zeph and Fink to have another sibling, uh.. even more than one?
Haha, I have so many asks in my inbox right now so I’m going to combine a few when they match up.
To anon, I didn’t have any headcanons like that. I think Zeph and Fink canonically would be the last, although it’s perfectly plausible that there’d be another.
In FACT, this reminds me of a Lund situation. Back in ye olde days I had Garik and Roan and then the much younger (by 7 years after Roan) Lund who was an accident because Hiccup and Astrid got lazy in their age. Now Lund’s design is very much like Fink with the blonde hair and green eyes—though very, very different personalities in respects to Lund being both the youngest of three siblings and much younger at that.
If there were another baby, that’s how I’d see it go down. Accidental.
To Ninjas, GOSH I miss Jóra. All of my babies have been side-swiped for the canon babies, but I still adore what was created beforehand. A big part of Jojo’s personality was being the oldest child. Whenever I create children I always keep in mind birth order coming from a large, tight-nit family myself. She’d be entirely different, plus, likely, a different name, coming in last.
Though Jojo as the baby, with so much more allowance and freedom, does have a fun feel for it.
Jora &Astrid's relationship amuses me. Astrid behaves so weird.. it's almost a bit silly? (she reminds me of my own mother hahaha) What does Hiccup think of it? Does he ever take sides or just stay out of the female drama? What about grandma Valka?
Moms are weird. I did an in-depth talk of Astrid and her daughter, where you can see that Astrid isn’t being unreasonable or anything, she just wants her daughter to excel at life (while not understanding why she’s so different, haha).
Grandma Valka, or Nana (not to be confused with Nánná) drives Astrid crazy sometimes because Jojo loves her. Nana was a rebel back in her day and that’s the sort of thing a teenager wants to hear about (and the mother of said teenager does not). I spoke about Jóra and ‘Nana’ HERE and HERE, where you can basically get the gist that Nana encourages Jojo in ways Astrid doesn’t want her to be encouraged more often than not.
As for Hiccup? Yeah, he’ll stay out of it a lot depending on how petty it is. He’ll side with his wife (“Jojo, just train for an hour”, “Get out of bed, Jojo”, “Just get a clean tunic like your mother asked, Jo”), though sometimes in private he’ll have small talks with Astrid ( “So what if she doesn’t want to master an axe? Let her find something else.” “She doesn’t seem to want to find anything else, that’s the problem!” “Okay! Then she won’t master any weapon.” “Peace isn’t forever, Hiccup, and a VIking should know how to protect herself”).
Is there anyone Jojo doesn't like?
Well, yeah, Sigrid. And, superficially, her mother on occasion. And Phelgma-the-Fierce’s grand Egg-of-a-Nephew after her brief infatuation with him ends. And Gustav, but more in an irritated kind of way.
I'm depressed and in a state of idleness before class instead of answering emails or writing a blog. Do you have any random Jojo tidbits about her life? Has Hiccup or Astrid ever become overprotective of her, in any occasion?
Well, I talked about potential overprotective Hiccup. As for Astrid… opposite to Hiccup, Astrid does the needling, sometimes-too0involved overprotectiveness. She’s got a comment about every-other thing Jojo does.
And anyone that catches Jojo’s interest seems to be… subpar to Astrid. Rather than doing some ridiculous blustering “YOU’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR MY DAUGHTER” dance, Astrid tries to prod Jóra into realizing it for herself.
So when Jojo’s stealthily trying to wipe the blush from her cheeks after being stopped on her way home by Phlegma the Fierce’s nephew for a brief exchange of words, Astrid’s standing on their front step with her arms crossed.
Astrid cocks her head, squints at the retreating, lumbering figure of the young man and says, “Him?”
